Amazon Bolsters Video Service for War with Netflix

There are two major types of digital video services available today, a la carte offerings like iTunes Store that offer movies and TV shows for purchases and rentals, and video streaming services like Netflix. Interestingly, only Amazon offers a truly viable alternative in both markets, and this week the online retailing giant announced an improvement to its selections in both areas.

According to Amazon, the company now offers over 100,000 movies and TV shows for purchase or rent via its Instant Video service, over 15,000 of which are available in HD. And it provides over 9,000 movies and TV shows for streaming; best of all, subscribers to the company's Amazon Prime service get this streaming functionality for free.

Like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video--which again offers video rentals and purchases as well as streaming--is available via numerous set-top boxes and other digital devices, including PCs, Macs, and over 300 televisions, Blu-Ray players, and set-top boxes.

Why is this important? While the market for a la carte video appears to be up for grabs--Apple's iTunes competes with similar services but also with cable companies' On Demand functionality--the suddenly lucrative streaming video market has only one major player right now. That's Netflix, thanks largely to the decline of Hulu Plus, which has turned into a low-rent, TV show rerun service. So Amazon sees a chance to unseat Netflix, which of course recently angered subscribers with a pretty serious price hike.

As a subscriber to Amazon Prime, I like that Amazon's Instant Video streaming service is free. But the selection is still pretty lousy compared to Netflix. I expect that to change over time. For now, however, I'd just recommend keeping an eye on Amazon to see how this improves. And yes, if you're already paying for Amazon Prime, by all means check out the free streaming service. But it's not time to replace Netflix. Not yet.

As a surprise birthday present, I was recently given a new Apple TV (the little black streaming only model). Since I already had an original Apple TV, I switched over and I'm very happy with the new one. However, I had dozens of purchased TV episodes on the old Apple TV that I wanted to keep and I wasn't really sure of the best way to do that. About two weeks ago Apple silently put ALL our TV/Movie purchases on one of their servers and they stream to the Apple TV, and you can view them on the Apple TV, iPad, Mac and iPhone! It was much more than would fit on the old Apple TV because so much of the content was HD video. Putting all that in the cloud is a win! Since the new Apple TV also does Netflix very nicely, it's all the iTunes media available plus Netflix in one handy gadget. I don't know if/when it'll do Amazon, but I may not care since the Netflix streaming catalog is growing so rapidly.

The differing concept here is streaming and locally storing the content. Apple's only product that can stream content is the Apple TV (please correct me if i'm wrong). If you wish to watch content from iPad or iPod you have to download it. Which can take a while. Netflix allows you to stream alot of content. But then it becomes an issue when its no longer available to stream. And you can't download the content as a file. But the content will play instantly. Amazon allows for streaming and downloading. The problem is, you can only playback the downloaded files on compatible devices. It uses the wmv drm so it will playback on MS products (except zune hd and windows phone 7)But you can purchase the content online and watch instantly on your connected device. Zune Marketplace will allow streaming on pc and on xbox 360. You can download the content and play them back on different devices the work with Zune (xbox, pc and windows phone\zune hd). I personall mix my purchases between amazon and zune, because both can play on the pc and xbox. i can stream on the pc or my bluray player with amazon. I can stream on xbox with zune. But the big thing is I can download the files and save them. Then they're always available.
