Apple to Unveil Lion, iOS 5 Next Week

Apple took the unusual step of confirming in advance that it will unveil the next versions of its Mac OS X (Mac) and iOS (iPhone, iPad) operating systems next week at its annual WWDC event. Even more bizarre: It actually confirmed, again, in advance, that it’s cloud-based services offering is indeed going to be called iCloud. This may be unprecedented.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch; and iCloud, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

Given the leaks about deals with music publishers, I think they decided it was better to confirm early than be silent for another week. Now that they've confirmed the service the speculation for the next week will be how it will all work. It builds up discussion about the new service for the next week, too, and becomes more news before and after the full reveal.

I am wondering how many devices will be left behind with this upgrade, can all current iOS devices handle iOS 5?

If iCloud is just a rebranding of MobileMe, you can watch stock trading prices take a nosedive just minutes after the announcement.

Just a point to consumers looking at the (potential) music service: this has FairPlay Round 2 written all over it.
