Amazon Cloud Player Now Available in Ford SYNC-Equipped Vehicles

Microsoft's competitors are starting to tighten the ecosystem vice

Amazon.com and Ford announced today that Amazon Cloud Player will be available in several 2013 Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC AppLink. This combination allows users of Amazon’s cloud-based music service to access their music collections in Ford cars and trucks using standard audio controls and voice commands.

“We want customers to be able enjoy their entire music library wherever they want, from whatever device they choose,” Amazon vice president Steve Boom says. “And we know that cars and music go hand-in-hand. That’s why we’re excited to bring Cloud Player to the car.”

According to Amazon, this integration will enable:

  • Access their music playlists with the convenience of using voice recognition or dashboard controls
  • Play music stored in Cloud Player or play back music stored on their mobile phone
  • Enjoy eligible music in high-quality 256kbps audio
  • Get rid of CDs, wires, and other ways they used to connect and listen to their music in the car
  • Free up local storage space on their phones by storing and accessing music in the cloud

The Cloud Player integration is available on the 2013 Ford Fiesta, Mustang, Focus, E-Series, C-MAX Hybrid, Expedition, Fusion, F-150 and Super Duty models, Ford says.

This is a big win for Amazon. To date, Apple has established iPhone- and iPod-type connectivity as a de facto standard of sorts in most new vehicles, while users of other devices have to make do with USB or line-in connectivity. This is an area where Microsoft’s ecosystem—Windows Phone, Xbox Music, and so on—has languished.

Coincidentally, I’m in the market for a new car this year. And one of the many things I’ve been evaluating for this purchase is the audio system and integration with the devices and services I use. Suffice to say, it’s been pretty depressing so far. But Amazon Cloud Player integration is huge for me, as I do use and recommend that service.

Available for Android now, coming soon to iOS, and never to Microsoft Windows Phone. Yes SYNC by Microsoft does not fully support Microsoft Windows Phone first, second, or ever.

I am heading to the auto show here this weekend. If the car comes with a native iPhone connector I am scratching it off my list. I too hate "bolting on" the services via cables and half-arsed integration into a car's proprietary audio system.

Sync is the closest to universal services for most car applications along with integration with Bluetooth. Last time I touched a sync was in a friends truck 3 years ago and I was actually able to easily pair my phone and access all the calling functions right from the console. I am sure they have come even further since then.

Didn't Ford Sync start out as a product powered by Microsoft? How come Ford Sync AppLink doesn't even officially support Windows Phone now?

I'm looking into a new car this year, too, and the new Fusion Energi Hybrids look great, but if Ford Sync doesn't work with my phone it's a no sale, I'm afraid.

I'm thinking of getting a Ford and moving from Android to WP8. Is it still true that WP8 has no support with Ford Sync other than bluetooth and line-in cable, e.g. Sync won't be use WP8's data connection for apps?

I have a 2013 Ford Explorer with My Ford Touch. It integrates well with my WP7. I use the voice activation for text readouts and response as well as phone calls. I play my music from my Zune with full touchscreen and voice control including gracenote info. I also play music through the bluetooth portion of my WP7. So I am not sure what everyone else is talking about.

That's good to know. I was going by what was officially stated on Ford's website: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/phone-compatibility-sync

I have a 2012 Focus with My Ford Touch and it works very well with my WP 7.5 device (HTC HD7). Applink is the issue with this. My car has a Sony sound system and Applink is not available for it. Some 2012 vehicles come with Applink but not all. Cool sidenote, though, is they just added Audible Audiobook support (via USB stick) to my version. Audible via Bluetooth from my phone was very glitchy.

I have a 2013 Fiesta. I can confirm with WP8 Lumia 920, Bluetooth audio works fine, line in audio is fine. Using the sync phone features does not work. I can make a call, but it goes into privacy mode and you cant hear the other person, they can hear you. I just use the voice features of the phone thru the sync system to make / receive calls and for sending voice texts.

It's also too bad applink doesn't work with WP. It's only for ios and android.

Don't waste your money on Ford SYNC. Changed from Sony system to another and it's a nightmare. Don't waste your money.
