Long-Awaited Media Remote for Xbox 360 S Coming in November

Back when Microsoft announced its current-generation Xbox 360 console, the sleek and black Xbox 360 S, I asked about all the white peripherals that were then still in the market. Specifically, given Microsoft's new digital media focus with its video game console, when would we see a nice new media remote that was styled like the S console?

"Soon," I was told with a smile. Microsoft was working on something very nice.

Well, that was late last year.

But today, Microsoft revealed via its Major Nelson blog that the new S-style remote will finally ship in November and retail for $19.99. And as expected, it looks pretty sweet.

(By the way, if you're familiar with previous Xbox 360 remotes, you'll likely notice that the Media Center branding is gone on this remote. Is this coincidental? I don't believe so.)

Additionally, Microsoft revealed a coming new Bluetooth wireless headset for the Xbox 360, also styled like the Xbox 360 S. This is much less interesting to me, but hopefully this headset will be better than previous lackluster version. It will cost $59.99.

I am quite concerned about the lack of the Green Button on this remote. As somebody who has spent a lot of time and money investing in Media Center to use it as my primary tv experience for my entire house, this doesn't leave me with a good feeling at all. I really hope Microsoft doesn't kill Media Center, they have something really special with the product, but it is really beginning to appear more and more likely that Media Center's days are numbered.

This remote is telling of the future update to xbox 360. First off, it has a button for "live tv." This remote does mirror alot of the functions on the mediacenter stuff, but if there is no green button then I would assume the "live tv" is for the coming update. The guide and record buttons too have some fortelling of what is to come to xbox. I'm sure mediacenter will still be in there, but it will be a buried feature. My hope with windows 8 is that the Zune marketplace like it is with xbox360 will replace MC. Currently the xbox 360 is the only and best media center extender available, and hardly anyone usues it. Questions: This will work with the current white hardware, correct? Why does it have a button to power on the xbox and have the Xbox button? Is that a touch dpad for moving around? Does this mean the cursor on xbox will be a floating hand/arrow like when using kinect?

@lethbridge, I don't undersand what you mean by not having a green button. What is the giant silver button at the very top center with the green X? That's it!

@Sean, the big round silver button with the "X" is the xbox guide button. I am referring to the Green Media Center Button that has the Windows logo on it. That button launches Media Center. Since the 360 is the only Media Center extender, the omission of the Green Button on the new remotes doesn't bode well for us Media Center users.

What's the big deal. Already have Media Center Remotes that work with xBox. Give it a QWERTY on the back and you are on to something. Otherwise this is just worthless to me.

It would be a mistake to discontinue Media Center. Google just bought SageTV software and it's not as good as Media Center! Now that Windows 8 supports ARM, MS could do even more interesting things with Media Center.
