Is 360's Red Ring of Death finally fixed? Actually, probably not

I’ll believe it when I (don’t) see it, but CVG reports that Microsoft may have finally fixed its endemic Red Ring of Death (RROD) problems. Hey, the console’s only been out for three years.

New Xbox 360 models have been spotted using upgraded components, said to make the infamous Red Ring of Death a thing of the past.

The newest 360s are fitted with new 'Jasper' motherboards, says a report on Joey Gadget, as well as a new and improved graphics chip.

The upgraded components are smaller and emit less heat, according to the techies, which in turn should mean no more red lights on your 360, and less postman visits to send your console off to Xbox repairs.

The question, of course, is … is this even true? Looking at the comments section to the linked Joey Gadget site … probably not. Ah well.

Having recently purchased a 60 GB Xbox 360, I was however curious to see if it fell within the supposed range of Jasper-equipped systems mentioned above. It does not.

Thanks Sebastian V.

I have a 360 Jasper and I got to say it is a lot better in my room when I plan here in San Diego. Before my 360 would heat up my room quickly, this new model is quieter, omits less heat and uses less energy. I guess it was cheaper for Microsoft to wait for components to get cheaper before changing the hardware. What I need to test is if you loose performance but I don't think so it runs great. Now if they just release that update so I can transfer my games to hard drive then the system will be super quiet.

Fascinating. So far, my 360 that was purchased in May 2007 has not RRoD. However, I would be interested in changing up to a more modern unit that was cooler and quieter. However, I think I'll hold off on any changes on my 360 until sometime next year. I hope that one of the first notes for the next Xbox will be so silent it actually dampens sound. (Just kidding yall, but you get the idea.)

I'm still using the same first released XBox 360 as I purchased in 2005. All of my friends, also the ones who bought it much later, have had it exchanged within the warranty. I feel a bit weird not having had the RROD, now that my warranty is running out, or just has ran out, I feel it coming up any day now... BUT with the prices new XBox's are sold right now, I don't feel bad buying a new one.
