Browser Ballot Screen - Live

If you've not experienced the EU's browser ballot screen--because, say, you live in the US, like I do--you can now navigate to the Browser Choice web site to see it in action.

Refresh the page to see the random product placement.

Note that you have to scroll over to the right, which is indeed not obvious, to see the 7 other weird  browser choices. These guys are arguing right now for better placement in the ballot UI. But I think a better solution is a text hyperlink labeled "Click here for other choices" that goes to a secondary screen with these also-rans. An even better solution: Just get them out of there.

It is somewhat amusing that you show us the ballot screen, with "Your online security is Firefox's top priority" on the day that the German government recommends not using Firefox (now) because of an unpatched vulnerability. http://bit.ly/c3ftbV (I'm offering the Sophos link--which is where the shortened one goes--because it includes a handy--though obviously mechanical--translation.)

I have no idea what happened to the Sophos link in the comment above. (The shortened form survived the comment process.)

@jb: Don't put < >'s around links. Opera 10.50 doesn't look too bad now. It's worth a look. I like that they finally got rid of the menus. I might consider using it as an alternative to IE because it features an interface that's pretty close, and offers nice options. I still need IE for certain things though, so I doubt I'll use a secondary browser. I wish Sony would replace the braindead Netfront browser in the PS3 and PSP with an embedded version of Opera.

Wae Has Opera patched that God awful security hole? I heard S. Gibson say to just avoid it until they have.Opera is a very lightweight browser, I use it on an old Toughbook running Win 2K and it works great. I have to wonder about some of these third party browsers based on IE or Firefox. Do they patch them as frequently as browsers they're based on? By offering all these "off brand" browsers I wonder if the EU hasn't opened up its victims to even more security issues than the normal browsers offer. Thing are bad enough as they are without adding to the problem.

Opera is a very nifty little browser, its main problems might stem from the fact it tries to be too much but it is a great browser even it it is my #2 browser of use.

I'm a fan for Safari for Windows so I tend to bounce between that and IE. I guess the reason why I like Safari is because I prefer the UI over most other browsers. I just wish it would allow me to set Bing as my seach provider.

@whip: I dunno. It's Opera 10.51 now though. Dunno if that means the hole that you mentioned is patched, but Secunia says there are no unpatched vulnerabilities, so I guess it's okay now. I was just looking at screenshots. If I was in the market for a different web browser, Opera would probably be it. As such, I'm not, so it isn't. "I like Safari is because I prefer the UI over most other browsers. I just wish it would allow me to set Bing as my seach provider." I make the same complaint about Opera Mobile on my phone. On one hand, you have a company that says that choice is good and that you shouldn't have to use a monopoly holders product (in this case, Microsoft's web browser), but on the other hand, the company making the argument is simultaneously shoving another monopoly holders product down your throat (Google). So why doesn't Microsoft make a cross-licensing deal to make Opera (and other web browsers) to offer a choice at initial start that doesn't prefer one search engine over another, such as Google over Bing? Have they thought of this yet? Perhaps Opera would think twice about crying to the EU about the web browser issue if Microsoft threatened to force them to offer different choices in search engines, thereby pulling Google's funding to offer Google as the default engine.

I think 5 browsers are more than enough choice for anyone. As Paul mentioned in WinInfo Daily the other browsers should be happy they have a spot at all.

Have to say, i'm pretty impressed with the new Opera release. It defiantly looks better than the older version. But Chrome will still be my default browser.

No comment on being pointed out on being such a hypocrite this week, regarding the copy/paste comments you made some time ago? No, of course not. Not when Microsoft is paying the bills.
