Coming in Office 2010: Office Anytime Upgrade

While I can't yet comment on all the blogger silliness I've seen about tomorrow's WPC announcements (let's just say the most obvious Office-related predictions I've seen are dead wrong), I recently found this little bit of UI in the build of the Office 2010 Technical Preview that leaked some time ago. Interesting.

So, Paul, you're saying it won't be Office on the web? What else can it be? Something about Windows Azure?

Well, 'neat idea 'suppose. Musta brought in some bucks with Windows so why not try it on Office?

I wonder if this will be an add-on for Office 2007 users (posted as an upgrade) so people can use it to upgrade from 2007 to 2010. That wouldn't be too bad of an idea

This is like WAU (Windows Anytime Upgrade): It lets you upgrade electronically from one product edition (Office Home and Business or whatever) to another (Office Ultimate, or whatever). It's not for version to version upgrades (like Office 2007 to 2010).

Best use for this, potentially: You get Home and Student, which doesn't have Outlook, and want to upgrade to a version that does.

Or upgrade Home and Student to a version which doesn't have the "Not for commercial use" restriction. (All of which include Outlook.) With luck, going up a notch from Home and Student doesn't take away OneNote. (Of course, the contents of the various levels may shuffle--or not--compared with 2007. and the lack of OneNote in the middle versions could well change.) --John (who likes OneNote and would use it if Evernote were out of the picture) Fun times.

Hmm. The problem with going from Home & Student to anything else is the 3 PC license. Will the "OAU" apply to all 3 PCs or just one?

It's been known from some time. The question is will MS get SKUs right like they did with Windows 7 and messed up with Office 2007, Vista?

They seem to enjoy this "anytime upgrade" thing they've set in place. Soon it'll probably be popping up in WMP, Live Messenger, etc. I don't know what for... but hey it's possible.

@Paul Thurrott That's unfortunate. I would have thought it would be a good way to encourage people to upgrade from 2007 to 2010. Regardless, it's still a good idea to have in 2010 to upgrade your edition of Office.
