Excellent side-by-side comparison: Windows 7 Beta vs. Build 7057

Emil Protalinski over at Ars.Technica has created an excellent side-by-side comparison of the Windows 7 Beta (build 7000) with Windows 7 build 7057, showing how much this OS has really changed in just a few short months.

Here's a roundup of all the changes we've noticed between Windows 7 build 7000 and Windows 7 build 7057. Screenshots included.

There is almost three months difference between the two builds: the beta was compiled on December 12, 2008, at 2:00pm and the leaked build 7057 was compiled on March 5, 2009, at 8:00pm, so there's a lot of work to cover. This post is about tracking every noticeable visual change; although I do mention some fixes here and there, I'm mainly focusing on tweaks that are "tangible" as opposed to the thousands of bugs that have been fixed. As before, the screenshots are lined up like this: build 7000 on the left and build 7057 on the right, or build 7000 above and build 7057 below. Also, remember that the "Send Feedback" link has been removed in build 7057, so that's an easy way to remember if there is a window title bar visible.

Before I get going, I want to underline the by-far most important change in build 7057. It's not a critical bug fix; it's not even a brand-spanking-new feature. It's the expiration date. As you can see in the screenshot above, build 7057 expires March 1, 2010. What this means is that Microsoft is getting very close to readying the Release Candidate build. Very close in fact, but as you'll see, it's not quite there yet.

Check it out! This is serious UI deep-dive.

Ars Technica always do good articles. Except when Don Reisinger writes them, but he didn't last long there...

yeah, I read that article a few hours ago. nice to know... but the changes are mostly cosmetics, in my opinion.

Wow thats a lot of work, another think to note is that feedback option is no longer avalible. Does anyone use a tablet pc with windows 7? I notice that in all builds at random IE does not scroll up or down when you use the stylus gesture to scroll. Also if you click Compatibility view it starts working. I know I know sent it to microsoft

Unless you're getting paid to do it, this sort of 'UI deep-dive' demonstrates that you don't have a life. Just send me the OS when it's finished, and I'll read a book or a website to know how to tweak it. Thanks.

I do like when Ars is objective and focuses completely on a subject. When they are focus at a specific topic, the analysis is nothing short of stellar. I do notice that Ars tends to lean toward's Apple in their coverage at the expense of objectivity. If they would merely work on that, Ars would be the top dog. While not as bad as other clearly Apple leaning websites, Its a shame that Ars isn't as objective as they should be. It would be a credit to the entire industry to have such an outfit that keeps pure objectivity.

Looks nice and according to Adrian Kingsley-Hughes over ZDnet it's quite fast as well. Turning off the shadows was a nice tip, thanks.

>>I do notice that Ars tends to lean toward's Apple in their coverage at the expense of objectivity.<< Definitely not true. I challenge you to list three examples.

"Before we shipped our first phone, we set an aggressive goal -- we said we'd sell 10 million phones. And we sold 13.7m. We blew it away." "We've sold 17m altogether, you can see how people have accepted the 3G. But the touch also runs the same OS, and if you look at the time period, we've sold over 30m units of iPhones and iPod touch." http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/live-from-apples-iphone-os-3-0-previe...

@Ocean - The iPod Touch/iPhone is pretty cool, I would consider the iPhone if they were on my carrier of choice's network. Its nice that they now have with the 3rd Gen device what most other devices have had for years. Oh, and who was it that was talking and laughing about the Vista Anytime Upgrade, predicting that it would have annoying pop-ups all the time? Apple must have seen that and thought it was a good idea. --tayme
