Fixing Firefox's memory issue becomes a priority

Funny. I was just talking about this. Dwight Silverman reports:

Firefox users swear their beloved browser has a big problem with memory. When initially launched, its footprint in a computer's memory is relatively small, but grows quickly -- even when it's not being used.

The folks at Mozilla who develop Firefox say it's a feature, not a bug. Users who are forced to restart Firefox because its performance has ground to a crawl beg to differ. So Mozilla has decided to make the memory problem a priority, particularly as it starts working on a mobile version of its platform.

Christopher Blizzard, a Mozilla board member, outlines the issue.

Interesting reading. Hey, at least they're working on it.

"The folks at Mozilla who develop Firefox say it's a feature, not a bug" since when do 8 cached pages take up over 600MB of memory??!?

Glad to hear it! My computer at work is running Windows 2000, 512MB of ram with a Pentium 4... in other words it's "old".... Firefox becomes SO freaking slow after a few hours I am SO happy to hear they're fixing this "feature" (hey, now they're sounding like Apple).
