HP MediaSmart Server 3.0 Update Available to Order This Week

We Got Served has the scoop on a new software update for users of HP's previous generation (EX470 and EX480) Windows Home Server-based MediaSmart Servers. It will bring them up to the 3.0 software level, providing them with the capabilities HP previously provided to users of the current generation (EX490 and EX495) MediaSmart Server products.

The 3.0 software update DVD will be available to order beginning later this week, with shipments beginning next week.  These optional updates are available to purchase for owners of our EX470/475/485/487 products who want to upgrade their servers to the latest 3.0 software that is shipping on the EX490/495 products.

Please note the previously communicated information related to these updates:

1) The cost of the upgrade DVD has been finalized and will be US$25 or €25.

2) These upgrades will be available as a server recovery solution.  HP recommends that you back up all server files prior to installing the upgrade.

3) This upgrade is not recommended for EX470/475 owners who have not already upgraded their Server DRAM to 1GB as certain features will not function.

To order the upgrade DVD, visit www.hp.com and enter your product model number in the "Support and Drivers" section.  Then follow the path for your MediaSmart Server model number to order the upgrades.

We thank everyone for their continued support of the MediaSmart Server family of products.

If you're confused about which MediaSmart Servers are which--and that's understandable, as they're all almost completely identical looking--check out my article, HP MediaSmart Servers (Late 2009), which details the differences between each generation.

Thanks to Chris Waters for the tip, and for pointing me to this interesting update as well: Apparently, HP has also released an an update package for the MediaSmart Server, called HPMSS-1.3-R1, that includes an update rollback feature and some other interesting changes.

I dislike HP products...

I like HP servers, some of the best especially their blade servers. OT @Wae the quad SLI and those other parts are what a whitebox server builder would build....aka you. Make mine with blue neon instead of red and that mustard make it honey mustard. As far as my apology? The link I provided came from Ocean's link. My link only backed up what he was saying "mesh does not do versioning" nothing more nothing less. I dont care if its beta or enterprise, or if the user caused the problem or not. Had he used dropbox he would have been fine because it does versioning. I suggest after you get your GED complete that the first class you take in college should be Logic 101, followed by Health and Nutrition.

I've got an EX495, which is a great system. This update brings to the older machines what my 495 has. The only thing I find disappointing about the software is the transcoding engine ... it fails on a lot of media.

I like the HP business line a lot - servers, desktops, and laptops. I have recommended HP laptops to people, but it is typically the consumer line and these turn out not to be that good.

"the quad SLI and those other parts are what a whitebox server builder would build....aka you." Sorry, but we only build real servers. That rules out what you know of computers. "I suggest after you get your GED complete that the first class you take in college should be Logic 101" Sorry, but we only hire certified, trained experts in their field, and make sure that they are effective with customers without being a total putz. That rules you out too.

"I have recommended HP laptops to people, but it is typically the consumer line and these turn out not to be that good." Hardware: nice. Good selection too (Compaq AMD desktops are a very good value) Software: not nice (but all the HP crap can be removed) Service (especially repair service with extended warranty): excellent (don't buy a big-box in-store warranty!!!) Reliability: not so good

Paul, if your reading this I'm wondering if you can do this upgrade to a new larger disc than the stock 500GB in the EX475. Then restore the data using a external back up. Also the price is now: cost (USD): $27.95 plus tax.

@fastm3driver Yes you can remove the main HD and replace on of any size. I have replace mine with a solid state drive because my original HD failed and I don't want it to happen again.

"Sorry, but we only build real servers." Can you quote me some blade servers with FCOE 10gig adapters? I would like each blade to have dual i7 quads with 64gigs of RAM. 8 blades would be good right now, Full height or half height would be fine with me. Hold the neon on this order. Oh please add some BBQ suace with that and can someone help at the drive up window load those blade servers into my truck?

"I would like each blade to have dual i7 quads with 64gigs of RAM." See? You know nothing. i7's are desktop processors. If that's the snake oil you're selling to your clients, then they chose badly. Come back when you have some intelligence. "please add some BBQ suace" Please spell it correctly first. "load those blade servers into my truck" Exactly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tqxzWdKKu8 ( = rrode IT services)

Paul, how about making a chart showing which servers will run "Vail"? Include upgrade paths (if any) for servers that don't meet the minimum Server 2008 requirements.

@DarkSages - Did you do the disk upgrade as part of this upgrade to v3 or did you do it at a different time? I'm trying to see if I can do a disk upgrade at the same time since it's a "server recovery" process anyway or if I need to upgrade the disk first and then do the v3 "recovery/upgrade."

i7 was for you Wae, since you build w/shiteboxes. If you want specifics I would like some X5560's in those blades, maybe some 5570's if you price is good. The 5580's would be really nice but they are probably to pricey right now. www.intel.com if you need the specifics. What kind of blade management software do you have? Does it have some kind of DRAC/iLO support? Does it integrate well with vSphere? Do those blades allow me to boot from flash, since I dont need boot drives for ESXi? Its a shame you cant take off your McRibb bib and help me load up those Waetastic blade servers while I am in the drive thru! What happened to the customer is always right? Can I at least get a free McNasty with cheese?

@tayme as the resident foxnews/tmz reporter at this site how is your experience with HP and HP WHS servers? Oh I forget you only comment on other people's posts. Sorry for the confusion.
