Inside Google — Blood, Sweat, Tears and Bugs

I read this article this morning on the Kindle and it reminds me of the better industry books (like Showstopper). In fact, I'd like to read this sort of behind-the-scenes account more frequently. It's good reading, and it's not even about that interesting of a product...

Even at Google, new ideas do not always go as planned.

Danielle VanDyke, a young Google engineer working on the company’s latest mobile ad format, discovered that in August. The ad format was supposed to be ready for introduction in two weeks. But, as Ms. VanDyke told her colleagues in a teleconference, she was finding a bunch of bugs.

“I guess there’ll be a bigger problem in the future,” said Ms. VanDyke, a cheerful 26-year-old who favors hooded sweatshirts and ponytails, after giving her colleagues the news. “O.K. Must come up with a solution faster,” she said, almost to herself.

Google seems to spit out interesting new technologies so easily, they could be made on an assembly line. When Ms. VanDyke and her cohorts allowed a reporter to sit in on their meetings, though, Google’s development process appeared a little more haphazard.

On Monday, six weeks after Ms. VanDyke’s team was supposed to have the project ready, Google plans to announce what they were working on: a new feature of AdSense for mobile Web sites. It lets mobile publishers run special Google text ads on their sites when the site is visited by a smartphone. But instead of the basic text ads shown on regular cellphone Web sites, the ads come in different sizes, with more sophisticated design, and can include small images.

I know of many mobile companies already offering ads through mobile sites and RSS feeds because I regularly browse mobile sites on my phone and have done so for years now, even before ads were being considered (they were considered a waste of bandwidth, and they still are). Google is just late to the party.

" But instead of the basic text ads shown on regular cellphone Web sites, the ads come in different sizes, with more sophisticated design, and can include small images." Quattro Wireless already does this. http://www.quattrowireless.com/

Pointless. Everybody who visits this site ever for any reason knows that software development is not a linear, by the book, plan conforming process. PT visits Redmond all the time, and he must have grasped that basic fact by now. Nothing here, except the extension of the snarky tone to Google.

What kills me is that everything Google does is given such a pass in the tech media. This is an advertising company first and foremost and everything you see from them needs to be viewed from that point of view. I don't trust them and the less I use them the happier I am.

I have to admit whiplash55 is not wrong here

"Nothing here, except the extension of the snarky tone to Google. " And that's the point. It's not "pointless" at all. It's all a part of the WinJihadist agenda. "This is an advertising company first and foremost and everything you see from them needs to be viewed from that point of view." How is that different from the TV stations you watch? They exist to sell advertising, not entertain or inform the public. They make their money by selling ad time. This website exists because it sells advertising. Do you distrust it because of that? How absolutely silly.

That should be an easy fix for Google. They just pick up the mobile phone, dial 6-6-6, and ask Satan for help quick. He'll respond fast since he's a partner.

"Satan recently moved his tech support to India. The wait times went up tenfold." And so is the IQ level of the call center operator.

A bit OT: I keep hearing things a about a "Google OS." Is this nothing more than Chrome with add-ons, or are they working on a desktop OS?
