iPad Shipment Notification

Like many this morning, I awoke to a happy email from Apple noting that my iPad pre-order has shipped ... from Shenzhen, China. This is a location that most people in the western world would never have heard of if it weren't for Apple, since this is where their manufacturing partners' sweatshops are located. The package is scheduled to arrive "by April 3," which is of course the day that the iPad is set to launch. I'll try to impulsively not refresh the UPS shipping page all week. Really.

Looking forward Paul to your comments on it after you've had a chance to use it for awhile. I am interested to know how is it going to feel to hold most of the time or can you let it rest on it's case most of the time. So if you go to Starbuck's, do you hold it with one hand while sipping out of the other? And how long can you do that for? I'm quite interested in the Ergonomics of it because we seem to know what it can do. Thanks.

"This is a location that most people in the western world would never have heard of if it weren't for Apple, since this is where their manufacturing partners' sweatshops are located." Uh, no. Shenzhen is an ENORMOUS manufacturing center, located just across the old China/Hong Kong border. It started to grow dramatically in the early 90's and has become a gigantic center for many industries. I was there in 1992, when it was still not much, but since then enormous investment has taken place and it is now the 2nd busiest port in China. Apple is a very small player in the total growth of Shenzhen. The Thinkpads you admir, are produced by the Lenovo "sweatshops" there. 10 seconds of research would have told you the same http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenzhen

Sweat Shops, Yeah, I love how people who have never worked in industry label everything a sweatshop. Personally, I'd rather work in a clean Apple supplier factory than on a farm shoveling pig excrement all day. They ship these things by air, so don't be surprised if you get the thing by Wednesday. Looks like things are accelerating away from flash for video. Games of course, are safe. "Already the Web is adapting. Videos powered by Brightcove, for instance, will stream in an HTML5 video player when it detects an iPad. On the iPhone browser, the video thumbnail will open up the Quicktime player. It will also work on Android phones." The New York Times and Time, Inc have been confirmed as launch partners. Brightcove does video for many of the big players out there. We're on our way.

Just another typical Thurrott post. Has to get the jab on Apple in some way, despite the fact that he can't wait to get his hands on the idud, I mean ipad.

"It's interesting, to say the least, that a device promising to be the best browsing experience—cue Scott Forestall crazy eyes— is in fact reshaping the internet. You could argue it's for the better, moving sites away from proprietary formats and heavy, resource-sucking designs to more open standards, and more efficient layouts that are easier to use. -- There's not much of a choice for site designers to follow this, either. As John Gruber points out, if you care about people on iPhone OS devices—to be clear, that includes the iPad—being able to use your site, you're going to redesign it, and "if you don't think people using iPhone OS devices are an important segment of your intended audience, you're probably wrong." gizmodo.com

@de Silentio: I don't think most people in the western world have heard of it with or without Apple, but I have never seen any polling data that prove the point either way.

"I don't come to this site to learn about Apple." Apple is doing more to influence and shape technology these days than any other tech company. Paul is doing you a favor.

" from Shenzhen, China. This is a location that most people in the western world would never have heard of if it weren't for Apple, since this is where their manufacturing partners' sweatshops are located" I would say to Paul to give China more credit for getting there first without Apple, but that would sound like a slam against China.

Shenzhen, China, is where the sweatshops of Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others are located. Note that Apple, alone, audits its shops so that the various laws and child laws are followed. Thus, Apple doesn't have sweat shops. But HP, Lenovo, Dell and others sure have them. It is good to have Apple content on a Windows Site. This gives the Windows Guys a target for excellence.

"@chuckb84 - It appears to me that you are the same person posting as waethornsmom over on the Wininfo page. Nice! --tayme" Tayme if you were a race horse I would bet on you. You will, 100% of the time, at least once per thread, post about another post vs posting about the subject. You can reach Tayme at tayme@tmz.com if you would like to be criticized privately. On Topic, why does the author of the Winsupersite blog, that called the iPad the "iDud" before the presentation was even finished on its launch day, want an iPad???? Can you just wait for the HP Slate and cover it? Paul's picture is now being used by Webster, next to the word Hypocrite. "a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings"

"Apple is becoming a content provider company that makes devices to consume the content that pass through the iTunes Store." iTunes has become the channel for Steve Jobs's's real business - direct-to-digital Pixar sequels! :P BTW: We know Randy Newman is a bit slow, but please put him out of my misery!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmH4KfV_A-E

If Apple has such a small market share, then one would expect much more Windows PC's to be made in Shenzhen sweat shops. From the Wikipedia: "Taiwan's largest company Hon Hai Group. Foxconn (富士康) is the trade name of the Taiwan based firm Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Ltd.) (LSE: HHPD). Foxconn is the largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components worldwide, and mainly manufactures on contract to other companies. Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod and the iPhone for Apple Inc.; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard; motherboards for UK computer manufacturer Zoostorm; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, cell phones for Motorola, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco equipment.[2][3][4][5] Foxconn makes computer cases, heat sinks, and PGA/ZIF sockets, many of which are used by other manufacturers. Foxconn also produces several different motherboards, with many being sold to vendors such as Dell, HP and Sony. Starting in 2003, the company has produced retail boards under its own brand name. In March 2006, Foxconn branched into the manufacture of graphics cards, starting with a GeForce 7900GTX, but with intentions to market both NVIDIA and ATI boards. Foxconn has worked with Apple since 1986. They produce the iPhone and the iPod. Foxconn also produces devices for Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Palm. Foxconn is also the manufacturer of the Amazon Kindle. Foxconn also operates under the brand name of Leadtek, which focuses on the hardware-oriented consumer market." Looks like AMD was not mentioned. Their new processors and prices looks like like a kickass product. My next build will most likely include one with Win 7

@rr0de74 - a. Your statistics are about as trustworthy as your IT knowledge. b. Yet here you are again, making comments about Paul; when we know that he prefers Microsoft over Apple and makes money based on that opinion. What is the reason for your tunnel vision? Oh yeah...you're a raving fan boy. --tayme

@tayme 0 for 2 in this thread. Please tell us how you feel about the iPad and where its made??? That is the topic. Paul hates Apple, but has to cover them because Microsoft products are boring, and since he is no real IT/Tech, just an IT blogger these days, he has to cover what is hot and news worthy....Apple products. This week inWindows is typically about everything but Microsoft. Google and Apple are favorites on that show. Another popular topic is gaming and how it sucks on the PC now that Paul does not do it. Or better yet how he is not a hypocrite for calling out the iPhone (Apple again) for not having copy and paste, but its ok for Windows Phone 7, 3 years later..........this week in Windows! I am sure the Zune's, 360's, MS mice, webcams, and keyboards are made by blue collar workers in Switzerland, where they only work 3 days a week and have a full year of maternity leave for both the Mother and Father.....if you ask Paul.

"If Paul wants to post about the Apple iPad then so what, its his prerogative and his blog." So very true. If he wants to be taken seriously out side of the small group of raving MS fangirls....well that probably is not working out so well. Paul will love the iPad, especially if his book is sold on it.

@rr0de74 - I find the iPad intriguing. I will not beta test it for Apple, though. I learned a long time ago to not buy a G1 Apple product. Again - You still haven't explained your illogical and manic attitude towards Paul. He is driven by dollars, what is driving you to come here and try to convert the "small group of raving MS fangirls", as you so intelligently put it? Seems a bit fruitless, so to speak. You've read that definition of insanity, right? --tayme

Paul Are you okay? Do we need to check your temperature? Looking at the vast majority of your electronic gadgets & gizmo's all has the same label on them. "Made in China." Your Macbook, Xbox 360, iPhone, ThinkPad, & the rest all are made in China. Wow. Shocker! Seriously, are you surprised? Did you expect them to be made anywhere else? Tongue in cheek? Maybe. However, if we're going to knock Apple, knock them for something that truly resonates. At least be glad you know that it's on the way. Plenty of folks out there that won't be getting theirs. Thankfully, I will not be partaking in a first generation i-Device from Apple. The storage, display graphics, & cpu are just woefully insufficient for my needs. I'll wait until the 3rd or 4th generation when the price drops, I'm in need of an upgrade for tech, & the storage is finally there. Unless an Android tablet or other device manages to do a better job. We'll see. I also agree with chieftom. Less Apple! More Windows! Unless you want to change this to the Apple Supersite which occasionally covers Windows.
