Latest Xbox 360 reliability study: Industry-worst

As an Xbox 360 user from day one, I will again assert that this wonderful console is a double-edged sword. It has the best games and the best network of any console. But when it comes to reliability, the Xbox 360 puts up Yugo-like numbers. It's just an industry joke. The latest evidence comes courtesy of a new study by SquareTrade:

Game Console Failure Rates: Wii 9 times more reliable than Xbox 360, 4 times more than PS3

SquareTrade analyzed failure rates for over 16,000 new game consoles covered by SquareTrade Care Plans and found that the Wii experienced one-fourth of the common failures that the other systems have.

You can download the entire study in PDF form. Among the details:

Looking at the first 2 years of ownership, 2.7% of Wii owners reported a system failure, compared with 10.0% of PlayStation 3 owners, and 23.7% for Xbox 360 owners.

That seems low to me. The Xbox 360 number, that is.

Excluding "Red Ring of Death" failures, which are covered by Microsoft’s 3-year warranty, 11.7% of Xbox 360 owners reported a failure.

There are other kinds of Xbox 360 failures?  :)

While the RROD problem continued to be the major issue for Xbox 360s purchased through 2008, early indications point to the problem abating in 2009.

The most common types of problems seen with the PS3 and Xbox 360 were disc read errors and output issues. The Wii had more power and remote control issues than the other 2 systems.

OT: Hey, look at this. Paul criticizes Microsoft, and no one's complaning.

I wonder if Microsoft will just send out the same PR piece as last time.

Paul, you shouldn't insult the Yugo, even in jest. ;-)

Okay, so now we have numbers to back up what we already knew. Where are the apple phanbois? Not one has chimed in and gone off site topic and onto the most important thing in their lives. Here's hoping they don't and that my Falcon doesn't Bite it anytime soon.

"There are some things that that are so bad, even Paul cant spin them. He as no choice to agree with the obvious." But.. All you do all day is spend time and see which issues Paul fails to mention on his website? Your life must be real exciting.. lol.

Xbox are still my console of choice over the PS3 and Wii. And I have all three.

@hamiltonnutsac what does that say about you. You follow me and comment on my comments. Does your mother not talk to you anymore?

rrode, Nope. You are wrong once again. I come to this website and follow it, not you. I just happen to notice you post 24/7 in defense of Apple, just like the other kids. Weak attempt at a put down also, doesn't even make sense. But at least you admit you have no life and post here all day. Haha.

Another glorious chapter in the Xbox 360's world. Honestly Microsoft, hardware just isn't your thing. Just own up to it, accept it, and leave the hardware designs to the professionals. You're a software company. Make the software. Thanks.

We have all known the Xbox 360 to be the most unreliable of the 3, but still the one to have if you want a real gaming console. I am a bit concerned about the timing of these studies. Does the release of theses reports have something to do with the release of the PS3 Slim.

"Industry-worst - SuperSite Blog" That was unintentionally hilarious.

As a Mac (and iPhone) user, I consider the Xbox 360 a good console... when it's working. I actually think that failure rate is terribly optimistic. I don't know a single person who bought an Xbox more than a year ago who hasn't had the system RROD at least once. It's to the point where anyone who bought from mid-2008 or earlier *will* have their system fail prematurely. I've had to have my Xbox replaced twice, and I know one person who's had nine replacements. But I'm still on my original PS3 from 2007 (knock on wood) and even my launch day PS2 still works.

history's worst is more like it. If Microsoft made cars, this would be their Yugo.

"There are some things that that are so bad, even Paul cant spin them. He as no choice to agree with the obvious." So your belief that Paul is an MS zealot (or whatever) is essentially unfalsifiable.

"If Microsoft made cars, this would be their Yugo." More like a Murciélago: very cool and very powerful, but rather prone to entering the "on fire" state.

Yugo. I that like No-Va? Or Mazda: Zoom Ka-Boom. What are the reliability problems with the PS3 exactly? HDD failure? That'd be a given anyway. Today's storage technologies are "inherently" (I hate that word, but this is popular usage) unreliable.
