Also worth noting from the press release: Ballmer said. “Small businesses around the world have big business dreams and needs. To support their success I am also pleased to announce that we will donate a portion of the revenues of Windows Server 2008 Foundation to TechSoup.org and Telecentre.org, two organizations that focus on bringing the power of technology to nonprofits around the world. We see this as an opportunity not only to deliver a technical foundation for business growth but also to create a financial foundation for community.”

This isn't "Windows Server 2008 for Windows Essential Server Solutions" - that one has Hyper-V and works with SBS as a supplemental server. Both are only supposed to be available to OEM's though. It'd be nice if both of these had a simple-to-use console like SBS and EBS....

@Ocean - Once again, why not get your own blog to post your thoughts and comments that are unrelated to Paul's topics? Maybe Paul will even swap pingbacks with you every now and then. You can even send us all the link and we may come read it. Wordpress is free to use and works pretty well. Give it a try. --tayme

Personally, Windows Home Server serves the needs for my very small business extremely well. I imagine the key differentiators for Foundation Server is around Active Directory and Policies. And if your plan is to grow your company beyond 15 employees than I can see the value in being able to easily scale/upgrade. WHS doesn't have that sort of upgrade scenario.

@Ocean - "No, I'm not interested in a bromance." I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion from my suggestion that you quit trying to hijack Paul's blog and get your own, but it certainly helps me to understand your maturity level. It is time to grow up or be known as the nagging little neighbor kid that you seem to be. --tayme

Microsoft has moved into a very interesting marketing strategy, evident both from this product and the forthcoming Win7 Starter edition. Provide a low-content, BASIC version of the OS, and give the user several really easy upgrade options. In both cases, the idea is to get entry-level users on Microsoft products. The risk, though, is two-fold: 1) If too many users decide to stay at this "low-content" level, does MS still make money? 2) Even worse, how likely is it that hackers will find easy ways to "unlock" the additional features? I like the concept. Hope it works out for them.
