Microsoft Office 2010 'Outspace', switching it on/off

Rafael has figured out a way to turn off the Backstage interface in the Office 2010 Technical Preview, which is codenamed Outspace.

Known only by its codename at the moment, Microsoft Office "Outspace" is one of the more noticeable changes to the new Office suite. Upon clicking of the Office button, you’re whisked away into a fancy task-oriented view that lets you manage your open document, presentation, or spreadsheet at a much higher level.

For those of us that hate change, fear not. You can revert back to the old way of doing things with a quick registry tweak. Simply navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Toolbars (creating that key if it doesn’t already exist) and create a DWORD named UseOutspace. Give it a value of 0 or 1 (representing disabled or enabled, respectively) and you’re done. You’ll notice with Outspace off, a piece of the original Office button shows up. This is a bug that’ll be cleaned up as the product matures.

Good stuff. Backstage is going to take some getting used to, methinks.

Of course, if you're actually IN the technical beta and not just bootlegging a copy for your own amusement then you should probably leave this alone so that your beta testing provides actual value for the Office team.

Actually, I'd argue that disabling it provides valuable feedback of its own.

How are people finding Office 2010? A worthy upgrade from 2007?

Paul, In a marketing beta? maybe. In a usability study? maybe. In an invited technical beta that has specific test goals? No.

@MikeGalos: "In an invited technical beta that has specific test goals? No." I'm definitely with Paul on this one. As a developer, I can sympathize with the focus of testing to only be on specific areas of the application. However, from painful experience I know that some of the most valuable feedback has come when testers did not stick to the testing goals, did something crazy and unexpected and found issues that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. In any case, I think Product Studio can handle the extra bug reports. ;-)

kenmcnamee If this were the only beta I'd agree. The problem is that this is a technical beta. There's a need for both tightly controlled and very open beta programs. There will, almost certainly, be both types of beta tests for Office 2010. But that's hardly a reason to confuse the two.

Respectfully? I think you meant respectively. Unless of course you are wanting to be respectful towards regedit. ;)

Granyville "How are people finding Office 2010? " For most of them, apparently, by following the lists of torrents on pirate websites. :-)

Or, as Reed said on the Office 2010 Team's blog almost 2 months ago (http://blogs.technet.com/office2010/archive/2009/05/19/leaked-build-and-...) : ----------------------------- I wanted to post quickly to acknowledge the information that you have seen today around bits of Office 2010 being leaked. While all of us here are happy to see the incredible excitement and engagement (and are absolutely chomping at the bit to reach the July milestone) we aren’t quite ready to release the technical preview bits. I would encourage all of you to wait until the official bits are available to ensure the best possible experience and not miss out on anything we may include. As a heads up, because we want to ensure our customers are safe, we have been monitoring various torrents and already detected quite a few that were infected. As a reminder, the Win 7 leak was used as a vector for attack and it’s not surprising to see this being used the same way. So, please be aware that if you download this torrent there is a very good chance you are also getting some unexpected malware with it. -----------------------------
