Microsoft Talked About Windows Mobile 7 And We All Missed It

To which I say, Whoop-de-freaking-do.

It's a sad statement on the quality of Windows Mobile 7 news these days that this warrants any attention at all, since Microsoft doesn't really doesn't say anything if you really parse through it. But WMExperts has a post about a Microsoft employee who--gasp!--actually discussed Windows Mobile 7 on the record. The details, such as they are, are as follows:

Microsoft is apparently working day and night to get Windows Mobile 7 into shape. (Though as WMExperts points out, the Softie's comments about Windows Mobile 7 being "on track" were soon thereafter proven false when Microsoft delayed WM 7 yet again.)

He acknowledges that Windows Mobile 7 has "been delayed" and that the company "had to go back to the drawing board with our strategy." That is...

Change things a little bit to be more competitive when we come out the door, so were not laughed at. We wanna make the same kind of impact the Zune HD made.

And that, folks, is exactly why Windows Mobile 7 won't make a difference. He even mentions one of the gadget blogger sites by name and how impressed they were with the Zune HD.

Huh.

I'm curious. How impressed are they with it now?

See, the thing is, the Zune HD was exciting to the gadget blogoshere only before it came out, and right when it launched. But these guys basically abandoned the Zune HD, as they do with virtually everything they cover, because they're moving on to the next thing. That's the ADD nature of the gadget blogosphere. (And before anyone stupidly mentions my own personal decision to back Apple's digital media tech over Microsoft's, that's because my son is deaf and we need the captioning support Zune doesn't supply. More to the point, the Zune is way behind the iPod in the areas that matter to most people: The App Store and the ecosystem. It's no contest. See this for more info.)

Today, of course, the Zune HD is an absolute non-event. It's like it never happened. While different models of Apple's iPod touch placed 2nd and 3rd on Amazon's best-selling electronics list of 2009, the Zune HD placed a lowly #89.

So if this is the "success" that Microsoft is looking for with Windows Mobile 7, it's misplaced. Right now, the company has the attention of the gadget blogosphere and even of the actual tech press, because we all sort of feel that this is Windows Mobile's last chance. Microsoft should play to this audience, of course. But if all the company cares about is pleasing a teen-oriented blogoshere that, yes, will absolutely abandon it the second the first generation WM7 devices ship, then it's already Game Over.

"We wanna put out something that we're all proud of, which is competitive on day one, we don't wanna wait any longer."

Seems to me that should have been the mantra from Day One. I'm glad Microsoft supposedly gets it now, but come on. They've had three years since the initial iPhone introduction. Three years. I mean, think about it.

I'm waiting and willing to be proven wrong on this one. I'm excited, even, to see what they have planned for WM7 at MIX in March. But I have yet to see any indication that anything relevant is happening on this front. And this statement from a Microsoft guy back in October doesn't change that at all. In fact, it just reinforces it.

BTW, WMExperts looks like a good site. I'll be following along to keep on Windows Mobile news.

For the record, I've been sort of following WMExperts for a while now. They are a very good site for WinMo news, and have some pretty decent reviews too. On Twitter, @winmodevcamp is a good account to follow for WinMo news too.

Oh it isn't stupid to point out that Thurrott lauded the ZuneHD to the heavens while simultaneously barbecuing the ipod/itunes sphere. He tried to quietly back out of those wild claims and people called him out on it. Sorry, but he deserves the scorn of not practicing what he preached when the HD was the latest hot news and now that his ADD has moved him on to the 'next thing' he feels fine just abandoning his recommendations. What a complete, dishonest, shill.

Yeah, Thurrott just doesn't square with these things he's written [and linked to in this article]: Recommendations: : The Zune HD is a superior music player but falls short for other media types and for non-music-player capabilities. If apps, Internet services, games, or other non-music functionality is a concern, you'd be crazy not to get an iPod touch. What I'm doing: I've chosen the Zune HD as my media player going forward, and on the current trip to Europe, I loaded up two Zune HDs with my music, audiobook, and podcast collections as well as a selection of rented, purchased, and ripped-from-DVD movies and TV shows. I will continue to maintain an iPhone and/or iPod touch, however, to keep up with the doings on the Apple side of the fence and to take advantage of the unique pocket computer/game player features that only the iPhone/iPod touch provides. This is not an option for most people, of course. Recommendations: : I strongly recommend that all Windows users at least try the Zune PC software and would point out that it only gets better if you couple it with one or more of the Zune online services. What I'm doing: I use the Zune PC software semi-exclusively to manage my music and video collections. (The one exception is that I have to use iTunes, of course, for my iPhone and iPod touch.) What I mean by this is that I rate songs with Zune. I purchase content from Zune (when it's available). I download and manage podcasts with Zune. This is my hub for music and video.

Yes, Paul and the ditto-heads were all over the Zune HD as the latest "iPod killer". Hmmm, "Today, of course, the Zune HD is an absolute non-event. It's like it never happened. While different models of Apple's iPod touch placed 2nd and 3rd on Amazon's best-selling electronics list of 2009, the Zune HD placed a lowly #89." Yah, reality bites. Of course, on Wininfo we got this headline, "Sorry, Apple: Kindle Was Number One This Christmas" to inform us that in the one retail venue for the Kindle, it edged out the iPod, which of course sells in enormously larger numbers through many retail outlets. But, whatever, just the usual obligatory and gratuitous Apple bash. It seems that the killer OLED display, that rockin HD radio and all those other great "features" amounted to.....nothing. "It's like it never happened" sums it up perfectly. As for Winmo 7, it will be like the Zune, locked in a desperate struggle for 4th place, behind Apple, Android and others. "It's like it never happened"....again.

I don't think any thought of the Zune HD as an iPod killer. The iPod ecosystem is just too big for that to happen, at least in the short term. Rather, the Zune HD gave those of us who don't want to be part of the iPod ecosystem a viable alternative.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this one, Paul. I own a Zune HD, and I have to say that every time somebody brings up the topic of music and MP3 players the past few months, I've been able to pull it out of my pocket and attract more people than the precious iPod Touch/iPhone users I work with. But then, the people I've shown it to don't really care about the games. They like the size of the Zune HD more, and they like the hardware design. And when I talk about the Zune software and Zune Pass, they love the idea even more. The problem is, even though the Zune HD is a superior product offering in many ways, nobody has ever heard of Zune. And this is Microsoft's biggest problem in all areas-- how they market their products now. They used to be on the TV advertising all the time, everywhere. Now I sometimes see them, and the commercials are lame. They need to get a decent marketing program going and actually market their products. WM7 may or may not be late to the party when it does finally release, but until somebody has CURRENT information and photographic demonstrations of it, we'd be crazy to count Microsoft out on it. Microsoft has an uncanny track record of coming back from the grave and kicking butt.

They are *news* sites. Not fanboy sites. Who is the Daring Fireball of Windows? That is where you look for ongoing Zune news.

What a bunch of dolts! More of the same ignorant brand loyalty for 2010. I'll keep buying and using what meets my needs instead of blindly buying what my friends thinks makes me cool or what the "Fanboys" on both sides try to get across. Pure lunacy is what you guys all show! --tayme

Microsoft is apparently working day and night to get Windows Mobile 7 to look like the iPhone.
