Nothing to see here: On the Zune experience popping up in other places

Smartphone Thoughts discusses a Steve Ballmer talk in London this week, in which the ever-leaky CEO mentions that the Zune experience will soon be popping up outside the traditional Zune ecosystem:

At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital,” [Ballmer said. “And if we don't have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player. Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you'll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc."

To be clear, this is no longer “news.” I first reported this in the “looking ahead” section of my own Zune 3 Preview, in which I wrote:

“Zune isn't just an MP3 player and a software experience,” Microsoft senior product manager Terry Farrell told me. “We think about what Zune means as a broader entertainment brand for Microsoft. So, sure, we can and will expand and refine the MP3 player business. We'll expand the software and broaden it out."

"But we also think a lot about connected entertainment. And that leads to external partnerships with groups like Windows and the Xbox. They're happing now, and that will move us beyond the base of just device owners. All this stuff we're doing isn't just for Zune devices going forward. We want to make the installed base excited, and we think we've done that with Zune 2 and 2.5, and we'll do it with Zune 3. But there's more going on there."

When pressed about what these secret plans might be, Farrell just laughed. "Sorry," he said. "That's a conversation for another day."

Compare the two quotes and you’ll see this was well-known a month ago. In other words, nothing new, sorry.

Plus Smartphone Thoughts ripped off my GMAIL/IMAP graphic, which I don’t really appreciate. :) j/k

The question here is not "if", but "when". With Windows Mobile 7 devices not expected until 2010 now, this is not even news, unfortunately. Windows Mobile 7 is turning out to be the Vista of mobile operating systems, sadly.

When did they give out a release date for Mobile7?

Exactly, Master3! When did they EVER give out a release date? They never did. So there is no way shark47 can say WM7 is the Vista of mobile.

Master, this is from Paul's Windows IT Pro article: http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/100384/amid-internal-turmoil-m... "Officially, Windows Mobile 7 has been delayed from the first half of 2009 to the second half 2009, but real world time-to-market is always further lengthened by Microsoft's mobile carrier and hardware partners, who typically add another 6 to 12 months to the schedule. "

@Shark47, Thanks for pointing that out.

Could it be that they are not going to wait for WM7 to come out to release the Zune experience to the Windows mobile Platform? If they can release it as a downloadable add-on, they could get a headstart on that timeline... --tayme

Actually, I think Master 3 is correct. The "delay" that was "announced" was, if I remember correctly, a report from an undisclosed source under NDA. So it really is more like: The rumored date for releasing Windows Mobile 7 to partners has been delayed...

Ok so Zune is a broad entertainment "vision", if you will.... A media entertainment brand? Where does that leave the Xbox brand? Just a gaming segment? How does Zune play into the Media Center Extender and media capabilities of the Xbox? Seems like a lot of overlap here. What if Microsoft decides to build a handheld entertainment device with gaming as the primary market? How does Zune and Xbox (and Windows Mobile) fit into that? Seems like a couple puzzle pieces are missing while others have multiple position choices.... I think they should have a unifying entertainment brand between Xbox & Zune, and keep Windows Mobile as strictly a software platform brand that isn't highlighted on devices as much. Either that, or just logo devices as XYZ-device "featuring Zune" to keep it simple for customers to recognize that it includes some form of the Zune software and can connect to the Zune Marketplace. I'd just hate to see some kind of multi-tier Zune UX on devices....nobody wants to see "Zune Silver", "Zune Gold", "Zune Platinum", etc, on a piece of consumer electronics. Windows Mobile devices now seem to be shipping more and more with WiFi standard (along with 3G phone functionality on the majority of devices), so I don't think it's a big step to make Zune access available from a single software system for all WM devices. Xbox doesn't need much more except for maybe just connectivity to the marketplace, and PC's obviously already have full functionality.

There you go - Mary Jo has a codename for it, "Pink". :-) http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1618 "If they can release it as a downloadable add-on, they could get a headstart on that timeline..." They might get OEMs to push the update. Are we going to see something like the app store on the Zune side now?

@shark47 I don't agree with your release time, we don't know there has not really been anything official from Microsoft about windows mobile 7. Second Paul is a little wrong about how long it takes to push updates to mobile phones. HTC has really been on top of it they released windows mobile 6.0 and 6.1 no later than a month after official release. More and more on line communities are releasing updates roms for phones like ppcgeeks. Also hopefully they will finally add a real "windows update" not like the one in 6.0 and 6.1 that does not work or they just never used. This article says Q1 of 09 http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/htc-exec-claims-q109-for-first-window... Like I said even if windows mobile 7 is not ready then it looks like HTC is at least in top of it. Until we here something directly from Microsoft or we see and ad for a phone running it I don't think we know much about windows mobile 7.

@Waethorn Since I Beta tested the first xbox and Live I been sending Microsoft feedback about making the xbox your media box for your tv. I did not know that they had Zune was coming at the time and when I heard of the 360 and tested that I though that it was going to be the best media device ever made. Hardware aside the software potential was and is incredible, then they announce or showed a demo with dvr/digital tuner capabilities and I was like WOW. Then they drop the ball the Market place sucks (well is getting better) and there is so much potential in it that they are not using. For example I love rockband becuase I love music. My favorite feature was that all song from rockband 1 I could use in rockband 2. The only thing that I hate is why must I be connected every time to live before I can play ported or purchased songs not everywhere I take my xbox (I found this out at a party I took my xbox to play and could not play my purchased songs). Second why have they not tied in this to the zune marketplace. For example when I purchase a song for rockband why can I pay the difference to also get the song in MP3 format. Hopefully they finally get things right with this new update they are rolling out and make one store that is easy to use and that the media works instantly in all devices zune, windows, xbox, and media center. PS MICROSOFT ADD A BACK UP FEATURE FOR YOUR XBOX AND ZUNE TO HOME SERVER

"@shark47 I don't agree with your release time, we don't know there has not really been anything official from Microsoft about windows mobile 7." You mean, Paul's release time. :-) Good posts from you and Wae about the gaming and entertainment platform, BTW. And before I forget, tayme, your 'Joe Sixpack' comment last night - was it made before or after the VP debates? Say it ain't so, tayme. Doggone it, you're not copying her, are you? j/k

Release dates should be estimated dates. I would prefer a lengthy wait rather than getting a poorly functioning, flawed product. Do you all want it to turn out like MobileMe for Windows? I don't think so. Are all of you always on time? If your one of my patients, the answer is that you're late 30% of the time. Of course, this backs up my staff and subsequent time slots, even when we build it in to the schedule. Either way, let it cook until it's done.

oddly, I've been getting everywhere early for the last few months. I'm beginning to wonder if the rising fuel cost really is reducing the amount of traffic on the road!

Even though Microsoft is doing a lot better, they still need to redefine and unify their digital vision. I really do hope they find the Steven Sinofsky of mobile of OSes and get Windows Mobile done right. Many people are not happy with Windows Mobile and there is a disconnect here. Some guy who had a WM phone said he could be working on something and a simple incoming call crashes his phone. That should be completely unacceptable. In some recent comments I made about Apple, I do feel that while Apple has had an Epic Fail this year, the iPhone 3G is a very well put together device especially on the OS side. Zune should just be another element on the Live promotion in the Microsoft environment. Instead of promoting Zune as something different, bring it into the Live promotion and unify everything. Create some interoperability between the rest of Live and what's being done with Zune and Windows Mobile. A unified digital life would be great. I could see them creating promotion like "Live Style" or "Live in the fast lane." I guess what we're all looking for is some consistency in their vision and products. This is definitely a weakness that companies are exploiting.
