Seven Perfectly Legal Ways to Get Windows 7 Cheap (or Even Free)

Windows expert Ed Bott offers up an excellent guide to getting Windows 7 on the cheap, along with some great advice. It's a must-read:

Only suckers pay retail.

If you’ve read any reviews of Windows 7, you’ve seen references to its price list, which ranges from $120 for a Home Premium upgrade to $320 for a fully licensed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Well, guess what? You don’t have to pay that much. Most people have much better options available, if you know where to look. As I’ve detailed here, the best deals go to PC manufacturers, which you benefit from if you buy a new PC.

But there are plenty of other discounts available as well. In this post, I’ve researched deals in three separate categories: upgrade offers available to anyone, special deals just for students, and subscriptions intended for technical professionals and developers.

My goal in this post is to point you to deals that customers legitimately qualify for. I am not trying to encourage attempts by anyone to get away with something you’re not entitled to. If there are restrictions for a specific offer, I’ve noted them here.

Go forth and save.

Go to a technet even in your town. Next week I get a free copy of 7 ultimate to sit in a movie theater and listen to MS speak for half a day. On top of that you can win other stuff.

Thanks for this. I'm thinking of staying in the Windows ecosystem because there are so many (more than 100,000!) applications.

All pretty good options, I got my upgrades from Microcenter during the June pre-order sale. They charged $39 for Home Premium and $89 for Pro. I just completed my 3rd upgrade a clean install on a Netbook, no problems either doing clean installs or the one in place upgrade I did. Even the in place upgrade was noticeable faster than Vista.

I got one copy at the New Efficiency launch, which was actually very useful for an IT Pro like myself, and even had the company pay for transportation expenses. Had I known that the party pack had a copy in it, I would have done that too. I already had placed a pre-order at Micro Center, which I was able to get my copy of Pro for $89. Both upgrades went without a problem.

@ocean: "Thanks for this. I'm thinking of staying in the Windows ecosystem because there are so many (more than 100,000!) applications." And most of them crap. Their users have no taste and buy said crap. Says a lot about a person. You're in good company.

"And most of them crap. Their users have no taste and buy said crap. Says a lot about a person. You're in good company." Sounds a lot like the iPhone ecosystem. http://www.tgdaily.com/consumer-electronics-features/44566-smartphone-us...

"And most of them crap. Their users have no taste and buy said crap. Says a lot about a person. You're in good company." robertsjoe, you completely missed the point of that post. I'm not surprised; you probably don't get out of your Mom's basement very often. Needless to say, you just made yourself look like a complete a$$ (not that it was a real challenge).

@waethorn: you're in the habit of trying to bait people with God knows what zip files? That's dangerous behaviour. Irresponsible at the least. BTW, I'm on a superior Mac, so it wouldn't really matter anyway. As for the Windows eco-system, it's also referred to as "the sewer"

@waethorn: If you're using anything other than an iPhone, then you have no taste or are happy with second rate products. 4th rate is you're talking about a Windows mobile device.

"What is @ocean doing here anyway? Thought he was banned. +1 vote to ban @ocean" Why are you insulting someone who actually cracked a joke about Windows?

"BTW, I'm on a superior Mac, so it wouldn't really matter anyway." It's a Mac game actually. Go ahead and try it.
