Silly 'Release Windows 7 now' campaign

I’m not a big fan of bald-faced attention grabs like this silliness, but I am at least amused to discover that I’m “jones'n” for Windows 7 to be released … now. I guess it’s possible I said that. Maybe. But what I’m really “jones'n” for is a chance to actually provide feedback on a product that wasn’t cast in stone before testers got to it. Maybe Windows 8 will be that product. Windows 7, good as it is, is most certainly not.

Poe said that based on positive reviews of Windows 7 by Leo LaPorte, another Windows enthusiast who has advocated an early release of Windows 7 on his podcasts, and Paul Thurrott, who writes and maintains the popular SuperSite for Windows blog, he's "jones'n" for the software's release.

"Let's join together and get Microsoft to release Windows 7...enough with this Beta stuff," Poe wrote.

Or. Let’s not. Let’s campaign for more transparency at Microsoft and less Apple-like secrecy instead.

Now thats just plain silly. Release an beta which still hasn't recieved the bug fixes and final polish? No. Lets give Windows 7 a few more months of incubation before its hatched. Its close to being launched. Very strong and solid, however there still remains some bug fixes, fine tuning, and the final polish of code before we declare it done. Now lets not get it twisted. Its very very close to being done. Windows 7 is a lot better than most want to give credit. I just think the more time in Beta and RC will benefit the product. A whole lot more improved than Windows 7 even on machines as far back as 2003. My brother and I tested it on an old Dell made in 2003. Works pretty damn good to the point that its my brother's new desktop now.

Isn't a big criticism by the anti-Microsoft cabal that Windows releases are unfinished? I think a few months will do Windows 7 good, and with the economy, people would be better served with the OS later this year, when it is the most encouragement to buy computers near winter holidays and back-to-school time.

The silliness of that campaign is that Windows 7 is available now! You can get the stable beta for free and run it to your heart's content. Then, when the RC comes out you can get that and it should be even more stable. Then you can buy the final version when it goes RTM. These people act like Microsoft is withholding this great OS from everyone when they're not. The reality is that Windows 7 is not ready to be shipped with every new PC just yet. While it's very stable and performs better than Vista, it still has some problems with application compatibility and does occasionally crash. If Microsoft were to release it now it would be just as big of a PR nightmare as Vista was.

If you check out the forum at The Green Button, you'd know that the beta is not ready for launch yet... Many Media Center issues exist that need addressing. Why push for Win7, and then complain about it's shortcomings, when giving a few more months of development would mean they wouldn't exist?!?!

It would be poetic justice in a couple of days time this is twisted on blogs to: "Paul Thurrott Leads Campaign to Release Windows 7 Now!" Simply because then he would know how it feels to have things twisted on him for a change.

It's hilarious hearing Leo referred to as a Windows "Enthusiast". As I said, they're trying to bury Vista and this like the last throes of the FUD against it. They've got till the holidays to get it out their system before they'll move to the Win7=Vista bleat.

Apple has made big announcements over the last several years and hype was always the result. Microsoft finally, FINALLY shifted from dribbling out information in bits, never surprising anyone with anything, to Apple's Big Announcement style with Windows 7, and the product is being hyped everywhere. Going back to the old way is exactly the wrong thing to do.

Grammatically speaking, I think the article is saying that Poe is the one "jones'n" for the release, given the enthusiastic reviews by Leo and Paul. The sentence would make more sense were it as follows: "Poe said, based on positive reviews of Windows 7 by Leo LaPorte, another Windows enthusiast who has advocated an early release of Windows 7 on his podcasts, and from reviews by Paul Thurrott, who writes and maintains the popular SuperSite for Windows blog, that he's "jones'n" for the software's release."

I love the childishness with which Paul drops mention of Apple wherever he can, and wherever it doesn't belong. You wouldn't get this sort of stuff with quality Apple bloggers.

It might be silly but it's simple, if you're considering a new rig NOW you don't want to mess with Vista because the OS you really want is right around the corner. Who wants to load a production machine with a beta or do a upgrade if MS would just give us what we want Win 7 now. On the other hand I can see MS point, besides this has to be the closest thing to real PR/buzz that comes from the unwashed since Windows 95. Personally I blame Leo Laporte for all this up-roar, he started it on Twit and now the peasants are at the gates with pitch forks...

Monty, 7 doesn't have to be released before the beta expires. RC1 will be sufficient (and will happen). Win 7 does well for me (here on this sandbox laptop). I don't use Media Center, so must believe the comments above about that. Microsoft should (and will, almost certainly) adhere to "We will ship no Windows 7 final before its time".

Ive been running Vista for over a year and a half now. I believe Vista was a huge improvement over XP. I have been testing Win 7 since the first day of CES. It, in my opinion is a great improvement over Vista. It is by far one of the most stable and impressive betas I have seen. That being said, it is not yet ready for Prime time. I think anyone who believes it should be released now has not spent an adequate amount of time running it through its paces. Not that I think it has major flaws, it just needs to be fine tuned and polished. I like many others are anxious for its final release. It would be foolish on Microsofts part to set it free before it is time. To quote the great philosopher Paul Masson "We will sell no wine before its time."

@kenmcnamee You are a genuis! Windows 7 is now available in usuable form for those with a little skill or get a little help from a friend if they do it on their own. I was tempted to put this on a old laptop that I fixed up for a nice and law but decide not to get too crazy. Windows 7 is available and can be used for production purposes AS LONG as you have a backup of a production OS on which to fall back.

I think before MS release Win7, they have to resolve these issues:- 1. Reduce number of consumer versions. 2. Compensation for Vista Ultimate owners to switch to Win7. 3. Iron out the bugs and glitches. 4. Market it aggressively and positively. 5. Make the OS more affordable to the masses worldwide.

Well, i thing we need to give a litte more time to the windows team to polish windows 7 and more time to the developers, i had to install vista again because of some compatibility issues with photoshop CS3 (keeps crashing on startup) and my laser printer. other than that windows 7 is super stable and way faster than vista, i can see the big difference that that i reinstalled it.

Windows 7 by itself is ok...but the third party support isn't there yet. That's pretty clear due to the fact that I can't load any AV suites without Windows 7 BSODing on me. The same AV suites work fine on the same machine in Vista Ultimate. Those tools need a bit more development time before the release of 7...I'd say no sooner than mid summer.

@thor79 - What AV suites have you tried to load and gotten a BSOD? I loaded AVG and had absolutely no issues. In fact, they had a banner on their page announcing that they fully support AVG on the W7 beta. Of course, I can't find it right now, or I'd provide a link. --tayme

I've also had good luck with AVG. Zero problems on the Windows 7 Beta or Vista.

AV for Win 7 AVG, Avast, and Avira all work with 7. Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy wok for anti-spyware.

I put Windows 7 on a 2 year old Toshiba laptop and there was no issues.. It just worked... what more can you ask for. As soon as it is available so I can buy it I am going to use it to replace XP on my home desk top.

Forefront works well on Windows 7 too. I expect Morro to be nearly identical though.

For those of you having problem running AV suites, try installing it under administrator privilege and setting it to run compatible with Vista. I use Comodo Security Suite, completely free and full featured http://www.comodo.com ..... for those who wants to try.
