Small businesses: Upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate for $99

Microsoft also dropped me a note about this interesting Windows Vista-related offer, which I assume is US-only:

Microsoft and its partners understand the value of providing small businesses with a variety of affordable solutions that meet their needs.  For small businesses looking to purchase a new PC,  Microsoft is offering an upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate for $99 with new PC purchase in Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples and Amazons through June.

With the purchase of the Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade offer, customers can also purchase Intuit Quickbooks Pro and/or Windows Live OneCare at a promotional prices during this time.

This holistic offering provides the ultimate small business systems to the small business customers – helping them to get more done faster, work from virtually anywhere, track customers, suppliers, and cash flow, and keep information protected from accidents or theft.

Hey! I just read about this on Airline Travel. (just kidding!) Seriously, after reading your reviews on Vista Ultimate, I can't see any compelling reason a business would want it over the Business or any other version, except for maybe the file encryption. Am I missing something?

Small businesses should get Ultimate Edition so their bored-to-death employees can lose themselves in the Vista Media Center experience during work hours, play games (like Poker) and watch endless loops of the same videoclip on the desktop. And if you are wondering about when will they actually track customers, suppliers and cash flow... they will do all those things on the well payed overtime their company offers.

... and on a more serious tone: the only compeling feature of Ultimate over Business would be the multilanguage install option, but that is available in Vista Enterprise (volume license only). Businesses should spare themselves from installing media sharing features and other distracting applications.

I have Ultimate, after an upgrade from Home Premium. I see a few more crashes now of my Teleradiology software [actually a IE helper], but little else difference. Did not install SP 1 . However, the http://www.academicsuperstore.com sells a Home Premium upgrade for $65. Not a bad deal. Definitely worth it.

"This is a good deal?" It equals the price difference between Windows Vista Home Premium, and Ultimate in OEM versions. For the dysknowledgeable non-IT impulse computer shoppers for small businesses that'll end up buying a computer from one of said stores, they'll likely purchase a consumer system with Home Premium by mistake, not knowing what they're lacking in Vista Business, so upgrading to Ultimate will be favourable to get the necessary networking options, such as domain support, and remote desktop. Many small business IT purchasers (especially those that purchase, but don't know what they're purchasing) are frugal, and will fall for those $499 consumer notebook systems on sale from Best Buy, thinking it's a good deal, not realizing the mistake they made until they get it back to the office, power it up, and notice that it doesn't include the aforementioned business networking options.... It's also cheaper than Windows Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate, which sells for $159US or from Business to Ultimate which costs $139US. Also, there's this: "customers can also purchase Intuit Quickbooks Pro and/or Windows Live OneCare at a promotional prices during this time". So to answer your question, yes, it is a good deal! I still don't see any info on that page about the promo upgrade pricing though.
