Students: Get Visual Studio 2010 for Free!

Davor P. reminded me that today's release of Visual Studio 2010 comes with side-benefit for the students in the audience: You can get Visual Studio 2010 Professional for free via the Microsoft DreamSpark program. Here are the details:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional is the essential tool for individuals performing basic development tasks. It simplifies the creation, debugging, and deployment of applications on a variety of platforms including SharePoint and the Cloud. Visual Studio 2010 Professional comes with integrated support for test-driven development, as well as debugging tools that help ensure high-quality solutions.

To qualify for this offer, you need to get verified, which basically involves having your school verify that you're a student or via a student ID.

Also, for you non students out there, check out the new Visual Studio 2010 Express editions, which are free for one and all. (Thanks to David S. for the tip on that one.)

Nice tip Paul, thanks! I've been using the Beta/RC version of Visual Studio 2010 and I must say, I'm very impressed. It makes programming so much easier ... Of course, for those who still remember GWBASIC, perhaps this isn't necessarily a good thing. :) I'm downloading it now. Wonder if anything's changed since the RC...

They used to offer this to any student with a valid ISIC (International Student Identification Card). ISIC's are recognized around the world. Students that travel abroad and do the backpack and hostel thing would typically need one for their travels, but it's also a good piece of photo ID to have handy anyway. FYI: The development tools for Windows Phone are still considered a CTP (Community Technology Preview), meaning it's still in pre-release status. They also say that the Windows Phone CTP development tools ARE *NOT* compatible with the release versions of Visual Studio 2010 software. Also FYI: The Web Platform Installer is available for budding web developers. And don't forget that IIS 7 also supports PHP if you've tried LAMP before.

The academic edition of Office would be more useful than this IMHO.

The academic version of office would be more useful.... if you had no interest in programming.
