SuperSite Blog Daily Update: December 2, 2010

Good morning. As you can see, everything has changed. Again, please bear with me as I correct the problems. Chief among these are borked RSS feeds and the fact that the old SuperSite Blog URL is redirecting to a bad beta URL. We'll get there.

This post is more than a bit misguided from a style of communication standpoint, but the salient point, if you can cut through the unnecessary bile and schoolyard language, is a good one:

Saying that roaming profiles + folder redirection + offline folder support = user virtualization is a bit of a stretch.

Fair enough. He's referring to the Microsoft PR from the other day that touted two blog posts discussing user state virtualization. Here's my take on this: Microsoft has a pretty pervasive virtualization strategy that spans across various server and desktop products and technologies. But some areas are stronger than others. And certainly the user state stuff could be more comprehensive and seamless, and as some had mentioned in the comments section, this stuff has actually been around for a while. This is true, though many companies aren't utilizing it, which I believe was the point of the posts; i.e. that customers have asked Microsoft why their not offering good user state virtualization, when in fact they do have something along those lines already. But my. The bile.

One of us is a jackass. Is it them or me?

I assume the answer to that one is obvious. And it's too bad, because there's a good point to be made in there somewhere.

I would really like to see the Windows 8 generation address this in a more seamless fashion, and hopefully it will.

Verizon Wireless is going to launch its 4G network this weekend, which is great. But it won't have 4G smart phones for sale until mid-2011, which is odd. In the meantime, you can get a 4G dongle for your laptop:

Verizon is charging less for 4G than for 3G. One data plan will cost $50 a month for 5 gigabytes of data, compared with $60 for 3G.

Another plan will provide 10 gigabytes of data for $80 a month.

Is there any way to make the right-hand column narrower? The text of the article/blog post is only taking up about 1/4 of my 1280 pixel-wide screen. I think it's the fact that comments are shown at the right rather than the customary bottom.

The story and right hand column are competing for attention. Probably shouldn't be that way.

Also, at the end of the article the comment section should be easier to find as well.

I'll be honest; i'm not digging the new layout/design that much. The actual article content takes up a painfully small portion of the page, and the ads and fluff seem more intrusive than ever. Fonts seem to be all over the place. There seems to be a general lack of organization with the design. I don't know if this is a default theme or what, but...damn. Kinda hurts my head to try to parse a page.

The layout is a bit of an eyesore, but I expect that will be worked on. I do hope this is more reliable than the community server, although I encountered errors signing in so I'm not holding my breath.

Paul

Its early days and the new site is obviously going to take time and people need to be patient. My screen res is 1680x1050 and you seem to have plenty of room on the left side of the page. The drop down under each tab header is a good idea. Best wishes going forward.

I'm not feeling the fonts at all, but there is a lot of positive potential.

The view when looking at all of the posts has totally messed up formatting.

Overall, I think the new design is a good move for progress' sake (and I'm sure from a content management perspective it is a lot easier). However, there are a few things (which you may or may not care about).

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, particularly the smaller font. I didn't much care for the new change when the WinInfo site moved. It seems like there is more of a focus on advertising than on actually content (I know, ad blocker...). The smaller font is also rather annoying.

But, more importantly, and I think more constructive than my last complaint, I liked how the old site listed where the content was from right on the home page. For example, if an article was a WinInfo article, it would be listed as such in the title, if it was a blog article, it would be listed as such in the title. I liked knowing where the content was from because that helped me understand the direction of the article (WinInfo = News, Blog = Rants/Updates, SuperSite = Informative).

Enjoy.

Like others, not thrilled on the layout, but I do understand its a work-in-progress.
I'd like the ability to spread out the main(center) column a bit, as it's been said, the right hand column is just as big. Going full-screen with Chrome or IE8 gives me nothing but as much 'white space' as I have text.
Suggestion: Date your articles please. Looking at all of the new and old informatin...well, I just can differentiate them from the home page. It's not until I open that article do I see a date.

Hope you get your older "comments" section going. I came to the site to overview info on Windows 7 install from Upgrade disc, and anything tied to fact that I'm pushing it to a SSD drive. The article from last November had a large number of comments, but the new site is cannot display any of them.

Come on Paul, you've had three days now, shouldn't it be fixed by now? Get Leo to help you!
