SuperSite Blog Daily Update: November 9, 2010

Excuse the late start, I've been a bit preoccupied with Call of Duty: Black Ops today.

Which is awesome, by the way. :)

This should raise a few smiles: Microsoft has added full session SSL support to Hotmail today. In addition, SkyDrive, Photos, Docs, and Devices will now only work over HTTPS. By using a secured connection, users can be even more confident that their accounts are safe from hijackers, and their private information won’t fall into someone else’s hands.

While I have no idea if the Galaxy Tab will be successful, it's pretty clear looking at this promo video that the 7-inch widescreen is the optimal form factor for this kind of device, as opposed to the 4:3, 10-inch iPad screen, which results in a device that is too big and too heavy.

Of course, the basic UI problem of the iPad is repeated here, too: The Tab is just an Android phone that's been up-sized, with no major changes to accommodate the bigger screen size. There's some dual-pane iPad copying in there, but nothing exciting.

And of course, Samsung will over-charge for the darned thing, and/or require a data plan.

Awesome. :) I always wondered why Microsoft hadn't done this earlier but better late than never.

Hmm. Galaxy seven inch is the same price as an iPad, which has nearly double the screen space. In fact, it is not at all clear that 7" is the right size; I think it hits an awkward zone that is neither phone nor tablet.

Apple's competitors seem to have difficulty competing on price. How ironic.

Paul, the carriers are setting the pricing and data plan requirements, not Samsung.  I believe on Verizon it is contract free, but you will pay more for it.  The lack of a WiFi only model is an odd omission, but it should come next year.

The Galaxy tab hits the sweet spot in my mind when it comes to form factor and similar type devices including iPad. Good news regarding the Hotmail accouncement which adds certainty for people who use this everyday.

Black Ops is great....but its really starting to look dated graphics wise. It also feels mod for MW2 more than a new game. BFBC2 and MOH look so much better, and are less arcadish. If you turn on SSL full time in hotmail/live it will break Windows Live mail and the hotmail connector for Outlook. http://www.liveside.net/2010/11/09/its-official-full-session-ssl-for-hot... MS needs to fix that soon please.

I saw a galaxy tab on display yesterday, and even though I have no inclination to buy it, the fact that it works as a phone almost made me want to get one just to recreat the "I'M ON MY MOOOOOOBILE" sketch from Trigger Happy TV, when I was on a crowded train or similar!

So I have been using https for hotmail for quite a while since it is recommended. However, can't figure out how to configure Windows Live Mail to use the secure hotmail. Any ideas? Surely Microsoft wouldn't recommend the https email and not have their own Windows Live Mail support it.
