SuperSite Blog Daily Update: October 8, 2010

Well, so much for that theory: Microsoft announces that its Security Essentials product is now available for small businesses with 10 or fewer PCs, as previously promised. But the release is not tied to a new version of the product, as I had hoped. Why make people wait for October then? No idea.

Update: Here's why, according to Microsoft: "The small business allowance/EULA change is actually in conjunction with a standard service update for Microsoft Security Essentials; it’s the third service update since MSE’s release and is part of the standard product update release cycle. In addition to the EULA change – the service update contains minor bug fixes and performance enhancements as well as support for additional countries (Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Serbia and Vietnam) and languages (Croatian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Serbian, Swedish and Vietnamese)."

Microsoft and Adobe chiefs have a meeting. For some reason this is news. And then it's rampant speculation. What the heck is wrong with you people? I mean, really. But wait. What's this???

Because nothing the Zune did years ago is too old not to copy now: Apple is changing its tune on music subscriptions.

For the three of you who care, Apple is discontinuing .Mac HomePage viewing on November 8.

Add easily broken glass back to the ever-growing list of the iPhone 4's endemic hardware problems. Anyone who called this piece of junk "Apple's Vista" is doing Vista a disservice.

...and we know that if/when Apple rolls out a subscription model, they will retroactively become the inventor of the model.  All others only copied Apple's lead, as that is all anyone living in Apple's shadow can hope to do.

I love some of the comments on the iPhone 4 glass issues I have seen where they show some picture of the glass being seriously bent, but that glass is not inside the rigid metal casing that prevents it from relieving stress by bending....., and instead apparently it cracks....

who thought putting glass on the back was a good idea in the first place?

I like the small biz EULA update.  Volume license agreement setups are a pain for small companies, and it's definitely not worth the hassle for all the leg work.

For our business, we don't use the Forefront Client Security server management console, so MSE is something that we could use here.  We could use our OEM software loadout on machines that we build for in-house use now (except that the product keys need to be the ones from our MAPS pack).

As far as Microbe (pronounced my-CROW-bee) is concerned, I say that if Microsoft has the money, do it.  Apple has their own platform apps, and they haven't shown much love for Adobe over the years.

Anyone remember FairuseWM, or Soundtaxi or Tunebite?? Subscription music is cool for like a month or two, until you stole everything you ever wanted, and then whats the 15 bucks a month for? At least Zune lets you keep 10 for free every month, NO WAY in hell Apple will. "Apple's Vista" is doing Vista a disservice." BS, Vista's problems were minimal and blown out of proportion, Same as iPhone 4, come on Paul, don't be lame...

"Because nothing the Zune did years ago is too old not to copy now" Oh, like the FM tuner nobody wanted until Apple put it in an iPod? And, like how nobody reads books anymore, well not until Apple opened their own bookstore.

For those of you who are Star Trek fans, one of my favorite quotes is "there is no piece of technology in existence that the Romulans didn't claim they invented before everyone else." I think we can reword that a little to fit Apple -- "there is no piece of technology in existence that anyone wanted until Apple started selling it." But of course, like the Romulans, Apple would have you believe they invented it first, too.
