SuperSite Blog Daily Update: September 29, 2010

Some interesting figures from the NYT Bits blog.

The gap separating Apple and Microsoft at the close of trading on May 26 [was] $222.12 billion versus $219.18, or $2.94 billion ... the gap separating Apple and Microsoft during midday trading on Tuesday [was] $49.53 billion. Apple’s market capitalization has surged to $263.75 billion, while Microsoft sits at $214.14 billion.

Further proof that AOL is irrelevant and just doesn't understand that yet: It purchased TechCrunch.

Nintendo to Launch 3-D Hand-held in February. Just in time for the holidays. (President's Day?)

My Apple TV arrived earlier today. Typical of Apple's recent products, it's smaller than it needs to be. But it seems to work well. Netflix has search, which is nice. Review to follow...

Nazi zombies are returning in Call of Duty Black Ops! :) Nice.

Google is allowing people to turn off conversation view in Gmail for the first time. This is a frequent complaint, though I bet most have simply gotten used to it.

MS is definitely no longer a growth company. When was the last time MS introduced a product that swept the market? Everything they have now is just a rehash of what they've already had for years. Sure, it may be better than the previous version, but it still isn't growth. Since "everyone" already uses Office and Windows, there's really no growth to be had there. Everything else MS does is not a significant percentage of their revenue in comparison. Meanwhile, Apple revolutionized MP3 players, music purchasing, the smartphone market (and it looks like the hand-held game market, too) and now the tablet market (which is really a new market, since tablet PCs never became mainstream). All of these things have been copied by competitors since then (possibly bettering Apple's products depending on your POV and/or needs), but those markets would not have looked like they do today without Apple upsetting the standards of the time.

The patent stats on the NYT page don't really give much insight. I don't know the answer, but the proper question is what KIND of patents the companies are filing. It seems to me that Microsoft is busy circling the wagons and putting a defensive ring of patents around their existing products; all the Apple patents I see are iPad or iPhone or Touch related. I don't -know- the story on the patent portfolios of these companies; this is all anecdotal. My only point is that the raw number of patents is more a measure of the number of lawyers the companies employ rather than their level of innovation.

3DS release date is Feb 26 in Japan, a few days after the US celebrates President's day. Since it won't be released until sometime in March in the US I suppose they're targeting April Fool's day, which is more fitting anyway.
