Windows 7 Play To (Updated: It works!)

There are a handful of Windows 7 features I’m haven’t been able to test yet, and one of them is Play To, part of Windows Media Player 12. I wrote about Play To back in October in Part 4 of my Windows 7 Preview. This description was based on a Microsoft demo of the feature in the pre-PDC reviewers workshop:

WMP 12 include a demo-rific new feature called Play To that lets the player control network-connected media devices. All this requires is a device that supports the industry standard DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 digital media renderer. (It also works with other Windows 7 PCs.) The possibilities here are quite exciting. You could "play to" other devices around your home, say during a party. And you can combine media streaming with Play To, controlling a connected media receiver while streaming content to it from another Windows 7 PC on the home network. I hope to spend some time experimenting with this feature soon.

I don’t believe I have any Play To compatible devices, and I’m curious if anyone knows if there are any yet. But if you have the Beta version of Windows 7, the Play To application window can be manually started by running the application WMPDMC.EXE, in the Windows Media Player folder. Here’s what it looks like:

I don’t see a way to Play To other Windows 7 PCs, but that seems like an obvious way to test it. I’m also surprised you can’t Play To an Xbox 360.

UPDATE: Thanks to xiphi in the comments section, I was able to get Play To working from Windows 7 PC to PC. Here’s a shot:

Nice! Thanks xiphi.

It's fairly likely that this would come with the next XBox360 firmware revision. In turn, that seems fairly likely to come before Windows 7 is real (actual non-beta, non-RC, non-torrent release). Or sooner--there is a wee consumer-oriented show coming soon somewhere in the desert. (That show shares an attribute with the one in the city by the bay: I won't be there.)

"That show shares an attribute with the one in the city by the bay" It shares another: Neither will feature a keynote by Bill Gates.

I don't have the beta yet, but I know my PS3 is DNLA/UPnP compliant. You might try to stream to it. I can stream to it using WMP11 right now pretty easy (barring codec issues).

By the looks of the icon we will be able to play our music on dishwashers.

If you have other pc's running 7, just open WMP and click on the Share button. From there, you'll be able to enable "Receive media on your network", which will enable the "Play To" feature.

trieste I don't know about that. I think it's one of those Internet-enabled refrigerators that keep being demonstrated every few years.

Sort of like iTunes and another iTunes Mac or PC, or Airport Express, or AppleTV, or controlling it all using your iPhone remote? Yeah I get it!
mikegalos@msn.com

jeffsters Nope. Not like that. This allows you to stream to actual 3rd party hardware like actual audio equipment as well as computer hardware. Sharing media between PCs has been around for a long time. That's not the big change.

kalewallace: "I don't have the beta yet, but I know my PS3 is DNLA/UPnP compliant." I find it rather amusing that the possibility exists where Play To may wok with a PS3, but not an Xbox 360.

Paul, you're pretty childish. Lock the thread and then post an update? Childish. Lets examine the facts: >>The Mac/Apple community has been particularly childish about it.<< Links Paul? Links? You can't call someone a name without proof. You're being what you called others. >>the press over-reacted to this<< Has there EVER been a day in which all devices in a particular product line just STOPPED without warning, rhyme or reason? If this wasn't the first it was second or third in an extremely rare category. Where is your outrage that MS would rob users of their devices usage for a day? What if the iPhone just blinked out for a day? Heck, you slam Apple for AT&T's network. You're apologizing for MS here, pure and simple.

BTW, Todd Bishop says: >>Some users on the Zune forums are citing lingering problems, but others say their Zunes have unfrozen, as the company said they would. -- Still, the reports of lingering problems mean this incident might not be over yet, so we'll keep tracking the situation. And you can bet Microsoft will be getting lots of questions about it during next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.<<

Paul, maybe you should try to get someone to create a parallel anti-MS blog on this site for Ocean. Apparently, quitting trolling wasn't part of his New Year's resolution, because if it was, it sure was one short-lived resolution.

Ed Botts article here is pretty good for people who, like myself, will be going from XP to Win7... http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=630

I don't think I'll have any Play To devices once 7 comes out. Unless I can send video and pictures to my TV. Speaking of that Ed Bott article, I was suprised -- in a good way -- to see in one of the screenshots that Videos was added to the Start menu! Yay :-) I'm on XP and think I can handle the transition from XP to 7 I've heard/seen enough of 7 to know how to work with the OS.

Wow Shark, pure genius. How the did the Jack@$$ clan fare this new years day? Ocean is right Paul threw that out there after the thread is locked. I want links to the "The Mac/Apple community has been particularly childish about it" I read a few of the most popular Mac sites and most did not even cover it, and Macworld had this article. http://www.macworld.com/article/137846/2009/01/zunebug.html If that article is in any way childish then Paul's picture should be in the dictionary next to "infantile". Had all iTouch's blanked out for a day Paul would have been all over it with his Ant-Apple vitriol. Paul wont ban Ocean, it would take away one of his 18 posters.

"How the did the Jack@$$ clan fare this new years day?" I don't know, robertsjoe SP2. Yesterday, they had their panties in a bunch over the Zune issue. The funny thing is, none of these people even own one. (I'm guessing you don't either and neither does robertsjoe.) "Paul wont ban Ocean, it would take away one of his 18 posters." Just like the Zune has 7 users, right robertsjoe SP2? BTW, we're seeing more and more of your robertsjoe SP2 identity these days. Is your more sensible identity fading away, lindy?

17 according to Paul...Jack or um Sharky. Is that Shark Galos or Sharky G? No I dont have Zune. I had a Zune 30 at one time, brown even. If you look back I did not say one negative thing about it. Stuff like that happens. All of our iLO-2 boards in our HP servers are now 1 day ahead because of a leap year bug. It wont be fixed until we reboot them, which for the production boxes will be at then end of the month to apply any MS patches. Loosing your MP3 player for a day is a non-issue for most people. The worst thing about the whole incident is that it brought negative press upon MS at time when they dont need anymore. Timing was just incredibly bad.

@marc57 - Actually, there are morons on both sides of this mythical and immature OS war. I find that the closed minded are usually at the root of all of the bickering. Nice avatar, by the way. Kiss was my favorite back in the 70's!!! I am guessing that when Paul mentioned the Mac/Apple community, he was talking about the people like robertsjoe posting immature babbles about something that they obviously had no stake in, other than an opportunity to bash MS. mikegalos and the other Apple bashers have and will pay back in kind at the first opportunity. ITs the mainstream press that really overblew this. @Lindy - Were you or your company dogging on HP for a fix for this leap year bug for those iLO boards? Where was CNN and Fox News? I didn't see anything from them. Like you said, that proves that these things happen...and in the case of a media player, it is not that big of a deal...the iLO boards are not either...as long as you can still remotely manage your servers, wouldn't you agree? Enough of that subject...lets see some more important and useful discussion here. How about it? --tayme

Subject: Windows 7 Play To (Updated: It works!) first person (as usual) to derail the topic into a troll-a-thon? "Paul, you're pretty childish. Lock the thread and then post an update? Childish..." Oh yeah, Ocean again with a prissy complaint that mean old Paul posted an update to a previous story and wouldn't let this retard post his trollish "rebuttal". Oh poor F'ing baby. Anyway, can the Play To feature conceivably work with any PC using just plain software and a home network Or does it have to have some special hardware?
mikegalos@msn.com
on Jan 2, 2009
"Anyway, can the Play To feature conceivably work with any PC using just plain software and a home network Or does it have to have some special hardware?" It should Play To anything that supports the industry standard DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 digital media renderer standard. So any PC that has software that supports it should work as should any non-PC audio equipment.

@sharky - I haven't messed with it too much yet, other than to stream on wifi. I'll play with it a bit later on and see if I can figure it out. If I remember right, I have to have wifi turned on, just to set the default media server, though. --tayme
