WinHEC 2008: Microsoft announces support for 256 processors in Windows Server 2008

Which is odd, since I wrote about this two weeks ago. Anyway. :) Here’s the word from Microsoft:

The Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) continued in Los Angeles today with a keynote from Bill Laing, corporate vice president, Windows Server and Solutions Division. Laing announced in the keynote that Windows Server R2 along with SQL Server “Kilimanjaro,” will increase the number of logical processors supported from 64 up to 256 with leading hardware vendors HP, IBM and Intel. Support for greater than 64 processor computing provides customers with the choice to consolidate more data sources while maintaining similar or improved performance and scalability.  Click here for a link to the PressPass Q&A with Laing.

There's a nice demo of SQL Server running on a vastly multi-processor server in today's keynote.

Re: those accusing me of lying about the Mesh client for mobile: Nope. I have a Dash...and I have my three main PC's meshed. I'd hoped to use it to keep a few documents sync'd. I don't doubt that a newer, faster device would work better. On the dash, with the other apps I have running (WiMP, Newsgator To Go, and pocket IE) the device is pretty unstable. It does work OK if I keep the aforementioned apps closed; that would cramp my use of the device though.

The flexibility of windows this time around is incredible. The prebeta we received runs smooth and works with all hardware I have tried. I can only imagine what the real beta is going to be like, I am thinking of installing it in all my production machines. I got to say that their ad campaigns and what we been seeing from Microsoft lately is making them look really good.

"I am thinking of installing it in all my production machines" In a word - DON'T! (Are you taking IT pointers from Lindy now?) Microsoft's recent betas have improved in usable stability, but they are not meant to replace production RTM software.

Waethorn I knwo that but I think they will do ok I will backup my original vista config using my home server so I'll be ok and I can even use vista as a virtual machine.

On another note, Microsoft unveiled their new website design today. I'm not very impressed to be honest. I liked the old design better. At least it's better than Apple's.

@mikegalos: It's in reference to Ballmer talking down the iPhone, talking down Google and the like. Two markets where they are killing Microsoft's competing products. Years ago Ballmer said that MS would be as relevant as Google in search "within six months". And this was years ago. Hence he sometimes doesn't know what he's talking about. A clown. Same thing with Sol from Telstra. A top Tesltra exec said that Apple should stick to knitting (i.e. what they know) when introducing the iPhone in Australia. This was before they got it to sell themselves. No idea what they are talking about. MS as relevant as Google in search. Now that's funny. Live Search is nothing in comparison.

@shark47: The "copied from Apple" line is simply to show how hypocritical and outrageously biased and one-eyed this blog, and its fellow Microsoft fanboys, are. Had Microsoft introduced gestures before Apple, I'm sure Paul would have been whining about it with some smart-ass remark. You know how he can never pass up such an opportunity, right? The facts show it to be true. Here's a SuperSite for Windows factoid

"@shark47: The "copied from Apple" line is simply to show how hypocritical and outrageously biased and one-eyed this blog, and its fellow Microsoft fanboys, are." But, it doesn't end up proving that and instead ends up making Apple fans look bad. Do you really want to go there?

Robertsjoe, That's a brilliant image. Oh wait, it's a 404 error, because the Apple cult member doesn't know anything about HTML. (Hint: Remove brackets before posting URL's) Speaking of which, why are there Apple zombies posting on this blog? I thought it was called "Supersite for Windows". The ultimate irony is an Apple fanboy trolling a Microsoft-focused website and complaining about fanboys. What will he come up with next?

@agl82 many think this site should have its name changed because how much time Paul spends on Apple product coverage, usually just to bash it and attempt to gain readership through negativity but seriously he spends way to much time talking about Apple. Note to Paul, negativity towards the competition did not work for McCain. Lately he has been on the MS band wagon, I guess the PDC helped bring him back around, which is a welcome change. Winsupersite, should be about Windows and related products. Negative BS about Apple and their products is a turn off.

"Speaking of which, why are there Apple zombies posting on this blog? I thought it was called "Supersite for Windows". The ultimate irony is an Apple fanboy trolling a Microsoft-focused website and complaining about fanboys." There is so much hypocrisy there it's amusing. Don't you know that about 25% of all posts on this blog are anti-Apple or about Apple? So the "Windows" part of "Supersite for Windows" is superfluous and a joke. Given that, it's obvious that the blog is by a Microsoft fanboy (Apple hater) and frequented by fanboys (like yourself).

"No, it was a reference to you making a comment about human intelligence, specifically your assessment of Steve Ballmer's. From your statement it is obvious that intelligence is a subject where you have little experience." Intelligence is one of my favorite subjects. The way it's currently measured is flawed and restricted in so many ways that the only people you ever meet that brag about their IQ (or, god forbid, join Mensa) can often only be called morons. Being skilled in the ridiculously narrow area that the usual IQ tests cover and then publicly making the assumption you are intelligent doesn't make any sense at all. So making a connection between intelligence and IQ only proves you have no idea about the subject either. Anyway, dismissing the intended tone of the word "retarded" in the original post might as well mean you either aren't in fact very smart or at least don't care whether people think you aren't. But I'm fully aware that this is your discussion style. I'm of course referring to the way you like to lead it away from the original, uncomfortable subject and instead attack the opposite side's intelligence or knowledge level (sometimes with direct attacks, sometimes with irrelevant tidbits and tech-talk). This only works when all the participants of the discussion are in fact quite limited in knowledge and lacking any discussion skills, which is rarely the case after leaving kindergarten behind. "Don't you know that about 25% of all posts on this blog are anti-Apple or about Apple?" And that doesn't even mean that the rest is about Windows, either. How I ever got bored enough to count them one day I don't know, but usually the Microsoft-related posts don't really outnumber the Apple-related posts. But it's been getting boring lately. Comments are a real circle jerk these days, while Paul's posts have been getting increasingly obsessive and at times paranoid. I have my reasons to read this blog and comment on it, though.
robertsjoe

"while Paul's posts have been getting increasingly obsessive and at times paranoid." That sometimes happens when your master is the one that butters your bread. Not directly in this case, but indirectly. So when you're shill a shill for Microsoft, it pays to knock the opposition players.
shark47
on Nov 7, 2008
"Winsupersite, should be about Windows and related products. Negative BS about Apple and their products is a turn off." No. It should about what Paul thinks it should be about. If someone doesn't like the content or the tone of the articles, again, they're not being forced to read them. There are people who hate Paul's articles and constantly complain about them. That, however doesn't stop them from coming back for more the next day and the next... Most of you don't care for the MS related posts and either ignore them or post something inflammatory, so that some one care retaliate with a remark about Apple and you can go back to your usual stance, painting yourselves as victims of negativity. Negativity may not have helped McCain, but it sure did help Bush. Twice. It also helped a company sell computers. Moreover, there are no parallels between an election campaign and a blog. So, why do you all keep coming back? Frankly, I don't know.

robertsjoe Mum bettieblu Ocean ..and others Seem to think they have some sort of partial ownership over this blog, and think if they derail discussions, launch personal attacks against Paul, troll or spam topics, that somehow they will really teach Paul a "lesson" on having the nerve to speak his mind, and make him do what they think he should. As if they make up the majority of the readership of this blog. If these clowns really hated this site so much, then they would leave like sane adults would. I have no preference as I run Windows, OS X and Linux at home and each have their pro's and con's. More windows if you count all of the VM's I run on my ESX server at home. NEVER buy a 1st gen Apple product. This is true for most things as well, like never buy the first year of a new car model or an Xbox 360. Apple's closed testing makes it worse. In fact with most things that change over time like this, buy the last model before the change. I would bet that the Xbox 360's coming out today are perfectly fine with shrunk CPU/GPU, redesigned heat spreaders, and new mobo's. The new Macbooks will be good to go in 2009/2010 with all of the bugs worked out and .32nm CPU's. I am just waiting for those new NVIDIA chipsets they use to start failing left and right, YIKES!

If you're looking for entertainment value, you'll probably find Engadget and Gizmodo better. bettieblu Much as the "NEVER buy a 1st gen Apple product" rule may be true of Apple's products, carrying the analogy forward sometimes works against you. My car is serial number 27 of a new model and as a result I've got two advantages over later cars; the build quality is actually much better (I suspect because the people at the various factories were still learning the details and hadn't gone on autopilot yet) and one feature was included that later became an option when they decided most people didn't need it and they did a cost cutting. Just saying that the rule doesn't work that universally.

Mike lol, I agree, please change my "Never" to "usually". I always found it interesting when Car and Driver would cover a new year update to say a Honda Accord or Toyota truck, both of which I have owned. Usually the new stuff would include very minor cosmetic changes, some power changes/updates and a bunch of fixes found after the 1st year of real world drivers using them. Some of the stuff found made me think "I am glad I did not buy it right away". By the time the model had ran 4 years or whatever all of the kinks were worked out of it. In fact buying that last model shortly after the new model just released usually got you a deal. Just like buying a pre - October MacBook Pro right now, they are discounted in many places right now. http://www.macmall.com/macmall/promotions/custom5.asp?p=macbook-pro-clos...

Waethorn, I can see how Steve Jobs can say they'll fix the glass trackpad problems in software but I don't expect they'll fix the hinge problem retroactively. That one will probably be a fix slipstreamed in while they tell early buyers "There's no problem, it's by design"
