Zune goes blue

As part of the announcement earlier today, Microsoft will soon blue-on-silver Zunes. I've been looking for high-res shots, but here's a start:

Now that is--to me--a good looking Zune color. Well done, MS.

Why are they releasing this stuff today? I thought they had a different kind of conference going on.

I'm loving how they're pimping KEXP (A Seattle-based indie station) in these glamour shots. Is the FM tuner actually showing RDS data?

@mykie: I believe it is (Its been doing that since the initial firmware though), and its how they are now allowing you to tag the radio songs for later pruchase. (Assuming the radio station of course uses the RDS data for song info, here in the UK most Stations just do some random slogan)

Paul, just to let you know http://www.zunerama.com/ have some sweet updates and pictures. They have just confirmed the new firmware update will be available for every single Zune owner 1st gen, 2nd gen and of course 3rd gen. And the it also includes what many Zune users have been begging for, a clock.

Also, a very interesting video from news.com recorded by Cnet's Ina Fried and posted on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqsHBJg3aB8

If I were to design it, it would look just like that. Rectangular fits better in your hand and shirt pocket, and metallic blue is my favorite color. If you look at the popular competition, the colors just seem dull to me.

@Doc: They could've tried to make it thinner. I really liked the form factor of the 1st and 2nd generation Nanos. I didn't like the ones released last year and I don't like this year's Nanos either (based on spy shots). By the way, I was in NYC last weekend to watch the US Open Tennis and was really surprised at the number of iPods I saw at the Subway stations. Amazing.

I still think MS wins the color contest. Just go to a target where the iPod and Zunes are in the same row. iPods have dull color and Zunes shine. Touch screens are no big deal as a GUI, and perhaps a bit cumbersome. They just allow for larger screens on the player. I like the iPhone my wife bought me, but as a doctor, Windows Mobile would be a better choice. Fortunately, I don't need all the apps that docs that admit many more patients than I do. I rarely admit patients to the hospital except for procedures like embolization for pain control, and the rare isotope treatments, most of which is done as an outpatient. Even angioplasty and stents are done as outpatient. I did however, find a calender for the iPhone with a monthly view with text, similar to WinMo and Datebk6 which syncs with google calender. I just need to sync Outlook with Google. Now off to watch Terminator. Doc

mykie Not only is the shot showing KEXP (and RDS data) but KEXP is one of the authors of the initial set of Channels.

Very nice. Blue is my favorite color. Now Microsoft is definitely headed in the right direction, continuing to challenge the iPod in small ways. Eventually a trickle of water can become a tidal wave. I think thats the strategy. Keep minor challenges until it eventually becomes a major one. Slow and steady wins the race.

This is very excitiing news to Zune owners like me. MSFT is demonstrating that they've had a clear product roadmap for the Zune from Day one and have stayed the course, skillfully navigating product develoment through this third iteration. One result: clever software updates insure there's "No Zune left behind". One can only hope that MSFT comes up with similar successful strategies in their other lines of business.

According to Ars: >>The third-gen Zunes were supposed to be rolled out on September 16, an entire week after Apple's big event tomorrow. Unfortunately for Microsoft, a partner (*cough* Fry's *cough*) "inadvertently posted the lion's share of information" on the new devices, and Microsoft decided to confirm the details today. << Answers the question I asked about a Monday news release: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080908-new-zunes-arrive-early-wit...

After experiencing Sirius in my car, if I'm in a car without satellite or an MP3 CD player, I'd rather not listen to anything than listen to FM, especially given the NYC areas extremely poor selection of stations.

"That's how I see Cover Flow in iTunes." A product that, by your own admission, you don't even use.

"A product that, by your own admission, you don't even use." You sir, are as forgetful, as you are a liar. "Use" as in "on a daily basis"? No, but I have stated many times before that I have tried it several times (including the latest version to see if performance, stability, and general UI ugliness have been improved). I stand by my initial comment. In reflection, you criticize Windows, and yet you even admit that you "use it when you have to". The funny thing is, I don't have to use iTunes.

For us oldies Coverflow is great. Reminds us of the days when you could go and browse through records looking for something good. Hierarchical menus just ain't the same.

BTW, losta: Just because I don't use something, doesn't make it any less of a pig. (cue up cesjr with comments about your mother)

"In reflection, you criticize Windows, and yet you even admit that you 'use it when you have to'." Oh, and I'm sure scooby and lotsa have "used" the Zune.

"Oh, and I'm sure scooby and lotsa have "used" the Zune." I also haven't criticized it to the degree that Wae and others have. In fact, if you look at the last few posts, you'll see that I've even had good things to say (especially in the way they update old versions via software. Nice). And I've repeatedly--REPEATEDLY--said that their use of a subscription service is something Apple (and others) should eumulate. So sod off. Yeah, I've "used" a Zune about as much as Wae has "used" an iPod. I can see why people like it, and it's definitely good enough to warrant its number 3 place in the market. IMHO, it's not any better than that, but who cares? Really? Even if they tripled, quadrupled (or whatever) their share, it's no skin off my nose. Frankly, I hope they keep improving it--rising tides raising all ships, you know. "For us oldies Coverflow is great." Cover flow was a great addition to the Mac OS, too. It seemed gimmicky at first, but it's remarkable how helpful it can be when you start using it regularly. Of course, Wae thinks it's "ugly". That comes from someone who probably thinks Windows 3.1 was the epitome of interface perfection. (Sorry for the snark. Just returning the volley.)
