Zune HD 64

This would have excited me about 6 months ago, but given how things have gone with the Zune HD, and that Microsoft has pretty much moved on to Windows Phone, it's not as interesting as it should be. But it looks like Microsoft is set to release a 64 GB version of the Zune HD, to accompany the existing 16- and 32 GB versions. I wish I had had this option back in September 09. (Just as I now wish that the iPad lineup started with 64 GB of storage and went up from there.)

You can see a link to this new model on the Zune HD web site. But you when you click on it, you get a "Page not found" error.

I wonder what the thinking behind this was? Why now? Does anyone have any idea how many Zunes Microsoft sold last quarter? I don't recall them breaking the figure out.

Still half short of Zune 120. Why can't they just put an expandable memory slot like maybe SDXC?

Maybe if MS didn't have the attention span of a gnat they'd have more than two successful products (i.e. Windows and Office), about the only thing they have stuck with that has become a marginal success is xBox. Here's a couple of suggestions. 1. Pick a name and stick with it, I mean really hasn't MS had about ten different names for their search engine. 2. In theory choice is great, in practice more than three choices simply confuses consumers, think good, better best. 3. It is no longer enough to be a fast follower, in today's world, where it is more difficult to leverage your monopoly you now have to be an actual leader. Regards Joe Dokes

For what it's worth, Mary Jo Foley recently mentioned a rumour that Microsoft would be releasing an updated Zune HD later this year, which would be capable of running the new WP7 apps (which aren't backwards-compatible with the existing Zune HD, I hear). Sort of like a Windows Phone 7 Series phone...without, um, the phone. Anyways, if this is a sign, I'm excited. I was all set to buy a Zune HD, but then I learned that the WP7S apps wouldn't run. Personally, I'm quite surprised by this, given how good Microsoft has been about bringing firmware updates to older Zunes. Maybe it's a hardware issue? http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=5541

If MSFT releases a Zune which can run the phone apps, I may be tempted, but otherwise I'll stick with my smaller ZuneHD32 for the time being.

I'd have to say, if convergence means that phones suck at their primary role, I'd consider getting a device that acts as a PDA and multimedia device, with WiFi, and get a good phone plan on a dumbphone all over again. If "phone" makers can't make a good *phone*, then why are we calling them that?

The Zune was dead when it was originally release, and it's still dead. RIP

I used a 4gb zune for a long time, the zune software was great, much better than itunes I thought, but in the end I went back to my 30 gb ipod, it's just cooler. plus I cant use the zune software on my hackintosh, so RIP Zune

Internet Explorer continues it's well deserved reputation as an insecure browser http://www.krebsonsecurity.com/2010/03/microsoft-to-issue-emergency-ie-fix/ Unlike Chrome which is many times more secure then IE.

Why is Microsoft wasting time with Zune HD? It's not sold outside the U.S., unless your using it on Xbox Live most people don't care or know about it, & it just is another part of Microsoft that loses money. I was willing to give Microsoft the benefit of doubt with Zune for awhile. But it's pretty clear that it's pretty much iPod or nothing. Yes, I've seen a handful of other MP3 devices, but it's so slanted to iPod now. Honestly, Microsoft needs to kill of Zune devices & focus totally on Windows Phone 7 Series. However, I'd love for Microsoft to kill Windows Media Player & tune up the Zune Player as the new media player for Windows, support the existing Zune players, & for all the Windows Phone series. If Microsoft wanted to do something to piss off Google, they'd find a way to extend sync & shopping functionality of the Zune Marketplace over to Android. Android still lacks a really good software content purchasing, syncing, games, & video solution. doubleTwist is nice, but it's still in beta & far from being ready for prime-time. Other than that, Zune has been a waste of time. Microsoft really needs to make it useable & monetize it to the mass market.
