Microsoft Sweetens Office 365 Deal for Students

Students get an even better deal with Office 365 University

In tandem with its launch of Office 365 Home Premium for consumers, Microsoft also launched an Office 365 University subscription for students that provides four years of service at an incredible price. But this week, the firm sweetened the deal even further, offering students the chance to get up to six months for free.

If you’re not familiar, Office 365 University is basically a version of Office 365 Home Premium that is licensed for a student instead of a household. It combines the same set of downloadable/streamable Office applications—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, and Publisher 2013 (and/or Office for Mac)—plus SkyDrive with an additional 20 GB of storage. Instead of 5 installs of Office, you get 2, but the offering is licensed to one student, not a household. And you can’t beat the price: It’s just $79.99 for four full years, or less than $20 per year.

(To be clear, Office 365 University is not analogous to the business-oriented Office 365 versions in that it does not include Exchange, SharePoint, or Lync Online.)

Now, there’s a new deal. According to Microsoft, U.S. college students can test drive Office 365 University for up to six months for free, though the site reports that you get three months for free. Head over to Office for Students with your .edu email address to sign up for find out more.

Concurrently with this offer, Microsoft is also launching a set of video starring Aubrey Plaza from “Parks & Recreation” which explain the collaboration capabilities on Office 365 and SkyDrive in a humorous way. Enjoy!

Hmm.. I already paid, I wonder if I get the extra time.

Also, the website says you get 3 months free just by redeeming the offer and 3 more months if you share on Facebook. Maybe that's how the get 6 months total?

If you read the fine print for this deal, "student" includes college staff too (that's me!). All you need is a university email address to get the $20/yr price.

How is it possible to obtain academic verification before purchase.
I have been to the page but it seems that you have to make the purchase before academic verification occurs.

I teach in high school and I did this a couple of weeks ago. Proceed with the purchase and you will be shown verification screen. The options include 1) register with an .edu email, 2) locate the name of your institution from a set list, 3) manual verification.

I went with manual verification which means sending in something to prove you study/work in a school. I sent in a letter of employment but a staff ID would do. The next day, Microsoft sent me an email with a link which I click to add academic verification to my Microsoft account.

I went back to purchase Office 365, and when it asked me to log in I used the same MS account and everything was fine.

To be fair, the verification was done very quickly and I got the reply a few hours after I sent them a scan of my letter. I actually waited an extra week so my subscription started on the 1st or March instead of 23rd Feb (I felt I was losing a few days in Feb)

Just to share my experience, I did the academic verification with Apple in the past to get a discount on a macbook and that process took over two weeks with no clear indication of what is expected. Thus, I was hesitant to go with manual verification with Microsoft. Turned out the process was quick and well guided. There seemed to be a range of options to prove my academic status and was very different from the Apple store experience when I tried to buy a laptop.
