Windows Weekly 302: 5 Cokes and 1 Pepsi

The one where Todd Klindt does his best Mary Jo Foley impersonation

In the latest episode of the Windows Weekly podcast, Leo Laporte, Todd Klindt and I discuss Mary Jo's absence, Microsoft's plans to update the core Metro apps ahead of Windows 8 Blue, the reinstatement of Office 2013 retail license transfers, the EU's $732 million antitrust fine against Microsoft, Nokia's plea for Instagram on Windows Phone 8, and much more.

Picks

Tip of the week: Improve your Windows Phone camera with lenses

Lenses, or lens apps, are one of the most interesting advances in Windows Phone 8. These special apps integrate with your smart phone’s camera, giving it new capabilities that don’t require you to hunt and peck around in your app list: Instead, you can access them directly from the camera experience.

Software pick of the week: ModernMix

Stardock's ModernMix lets you run Windows 8 "Metro" apps on the desktop. FINALLY.

Audible pick of the week: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

The Name of the Wind (Unabridged) by Patrick Rothfuss, narrated by Nick Podehl is a surprisingly good read and stands with "Game of Thrones" as a rare example of good modern fantasy storytelling.

Beer of the week: Éphémère Apple by Unibroue

Hi Paul,

I think you may have a wrong bias against Free Software (your comments about Thunderbird, etc).

Just to have things straight, about what Free Software is exactly:

http://freesoftwaredeveloper.blogspot.com/2013/03/what-is-free-software....

An example of a company that makes much money from Free Software:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/red-hat-the-first-billion-dollar-l...

"Free Software" is about the 4 essential freedoms of the customer. Nothing to do with the price of a product.

I have no bias against free software. (In fact, I use free software regularly, including Chrome.) I just don't like Thunderbird.

Just curious, what is your problem with Thunderbird?

My clients use it extensively and have never had a problem. Is there something I should be aware of but I'm not?

No. Nothing to discuss. I find all locally-installed email applications to be a waste of time, especially those that don't sync settings across multiple devices. But I just prefer web apps for email.

Hey I am a (proud) European, but yeah I am pretty embarassed by all this EU anti Microsoft aptitude our EU beuracrats are bent upon. Whilst our Prime Minsters love Apple and Google, and want to rip up all our Copyright laws so that Google can put adverts on all our content.

Makes me pretty sick, when there is little choice of Browsers on Android.
