Music & Videos en Amazon Fire TV <div class="field-deck"> There's a new set-top box in town </div> <div class="node-body article-body">While I was dismissive of the need for yet another living room set-top box, the Amazon Fire TV will appeal to many. And it does for this market what the Kindle Fire did for tablets: It provides a credible entry that is tied to Amazon's exhaustive digital media ecosystems but also open to third party apps and services. That said, it also has the same issue as the Kindle Fire tablets: It's more than a bit too Amazon-centric.</div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="" target="_blank">read more</a></p> amazon Android Mobile devices Games Music & Videos Mon, 07 Apr 2014 14:38:00 +0000 37801 at Microsoft Announces Xbox Video, SmartGlass Improvements <div class="field-deck"> One for now, one for later </div> <div class="node-body article-body">This one is no April's Fool: Microsoft will finally improve its lackluster Xbox Video service to support an important feature that's been available from the competition for years. Sort of. Last night, Videolan's long-awaited VLC Media Player finally arrived in Modern mobile app form for Windows 8. But there are some caveats: It's only a beta, doesn't work with Windows RT, and doesn't support all of the file types that make the desktop version of this app such a delight. But it will of course get better over time. And it already supports all the captioning and subtitling options that matter to me.</div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Windows 8 Music & Videos Thu, 13 Mar 2014 14:32:00 +0000 37011 at Roku Streaming Stick Preview <div class="field-deck"> Oh look, an actual remote </div> <div class="node-body article-body">Roku announced today that it will soon release a $50 streaming stick device that closely resembles the Google Chromecast but comes with two key advantages: It includes an actual remote control and it of course features Roku's much wider array of supported services.
