It's good but there's still going to be (totally avoidable) blowback about the missing Start Menu. I understand Microsoft's vision & that they're trying to nudge users along by kicking away...

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 - 7:12am

I think the Surface Pro should be a new category. It's confusing to call it a "tablet" while also calling the regular Surface also a tablet. The Surface Pro is not really a tablet. It's an...

Monday, September 23, 2013 - 9:04pm

Based on the pricing... and the assumption that Microsoft is a smart company... all I can figure is that Microsoft is okay with low sales for the Surface, possibly because they don't want to...

Monday, September 23, 2013 - 6:56pm

I think it's absolutely brilliant that the entire touch cover/keyboard acts like a touchpad.

Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 2:01pm

There are a lot of great features in Windows 8/Metro... the problem is that most owners of Windows 8 aren't using them (yet) because they're using it on non-touch desktops & laptops.

...

Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 11:30am

I disagree about selling off Xbox... because the TV is the next battleground and Microsoft NEEDS to be there.

As for Windows RT running all mobile devices... I agree that that's where they'...

Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 11:25am

Agree. I think that, beginning with Windows 9, Windows RT should be known as "Windows" (with no desktop) and anything with a desktop should be called "Windows Pro."

This might clear things...

Sunday, September 22, 2013 - 11:12am

The Surface Pro is an ultrabook & runs Windows 8, so I understand charging a premium for that.

For the Surface (formerly known as RT), the price needs to be lower. Didn't they learn...

Saturday, September 21, 2013 - 2:12pm

Microsoft says it's "serious" about mobile... but then keeps following the same strategy--charging OEMs for WP OS & Windows RT when they should be licensing it for free (or close to it). The...

Friday, September 20, 2013 - 7:10pm

It's a great vision... but can Microsoft sell it? I wasn't encouraged by the (rumored) prices of the new Surfaces. Still way too high, particularly for the RT. I mean, the OEMs are about to...

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - 8:33pm

Thanks for the tip, but why does Microsoft make everything so freakin' difficult? A simpler solution would be... once a new app/program is installed, that Windows automatically takes you to the...

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - 8:24pm

Paul, can you write an article about where playlists created in Xbox Music are saved & in what format? They don't seem to appear in the "Playlists" folder for either Zune or WMP.

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 7:46pm

Microsoft needs to wakeup and realize that it's not competing with Netscape or Word Perfect. It's competing with two companies that are BIGGER fish. It also needs to realize that it's no longer a...

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 7:38pm

RT should be priced at $249--or whatever breakeven is. Microsoft desperately needs market share. They can make their money from "services" & apps as market share grows.

This is the new...

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 7:35pm

I really like that idea!

Not to mention that if the current Surfaces flop, consumers will avoid them like the plague. The brand will be dead (with consumers)--it will be officially "Zuned...

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 7:29pm

If they don't release a Surface Mini by Thanksgiving then Microsoft is the dumbest company in the world. That's where the bulk of the sales have been... for almost a year now. *sigh*

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 7:27pm

Microsoft is too busy trying to be last season's Apple to bother with playing to their own strengths and giving us what we keep asking for over and over again. *sigh*

Monday, September 9, 2013 - 6:50am

Agree. The Xbox Music app is a HUGE disappointment. I'm still using WMP & Zune & iTunes. Microsoft really needs to beef up the functionality of Xbox Music in Metro, or give us a desktop...

Sunday, September 8, 2013 - 1:44pm

Metro apps need more functionality. It's really that simple. I think a lot of people would use Metro apps (even on the desktop) if they just weren't so dumbed-down. People expect Windows to give...

Sunday, September 8, 2013 - 11:50am

Windows 8 would've been rejected even if it was 8.1 that initially launched. Yes, it's better, but... it's "a change" and most people don't like change.

Microsoft has a destination, and...

Saturday, September 7, 2013 - 6:46am

Couldn't they give away Windows Phone OS & Windows RT... without making it open source? The free price tag would attract developers & OEMs, but they could still avoid fragmentation of the...

Tuesday, September 3, 2013 - 7:17pm

You're not "thoughtful" at all. You're insecure and rude. Do you really think that you're superior to other people because you can afford something that they (allegedly) cannot? Does your self-...

Tuesday, September 3, 2013 - 7:04pm

StatCounter also shows Windows 8 at near 8% market share.

...

Monday, August 26, 2013 - 12:03pm

Not if Windows Phones are eventually going to run Windows RT. Then (which many of us suspect is likely) it makes perfect sense that Nokia would want to get a jump on creating hardware that runs...

Wednesday, August 14, 2013 - 11:44am

I wonder if they chose the 18th because it has the numbers 8 & 1 in them...

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - 1:17pm

Microsoft is the worst tease ever. They clearly could've tipped us Previewers off months ago that we wouldn't get the RTM until October... but instead they allow us to believe that we might get it...

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - 9:02am

This is why Microsoft should be the ONLY one making RT devices... so they can sell at (or near) cost without stepping on the toes of OEMs.

So here's how I see it. Let's say the hardware...

Monday, August 12, 2013 - 3:34pm

Oh, and create great, EXCLUSIVE Xbox games (like Spartan's Assault) for the platform for crying out loud!!! This is so freakin' obvious. Windows Phone should have 20 such games by this point....

Monday, August 12, 2013 - 3:30pm

I think $350 is still too high. Again, not because the Surface isn't worth every bit as much as an iPad, but because the consumer doesn't view it that way (yet).

Microsoft should've started...

Monday, August 12, 2013 - 3:18pm

I agree that Microsoft leaders seem to have a distorted view of the company (or are doing a great job pretending so). With that said, Microsoft's really only struggling in mobile. They are doing...
