What happens when Office Online is "good enough" and nobody feels compelled to buy Office retail or subs?

That's 2000 apps per week across all the international app stores. So in the US it might be only 250 apps per week across all categories. That would explain why you see just a handful of new Apps...
I'm with Paul. I've been rocking a Nexus 5 for weeks now and the way Google has implemented the on-screen buttons is genius. When you're in an app, the on-screen buttons either go away completely...
