I don't know anything specific about this, but given all the uservoice stuff they're doing for various products I have to assume they're listening now, yes.
Others did answer this, but yes, the high-quality versions of 1520/1020/Icon/930 photos do get uploaded to OneDrive directly from the phone as well (over Wi-Fi).
You could but the Microsoft parts are angled for the Surface devices and dock ports, so they fit exactly. You might have to trim away some of the surrounding plastic on a third party part.
