On one of my machines I had installation rollbacks too. There was an error log somewhere under $windows.~bt\Sources\Panther.

I assume "No more upgrade versions" only is about pricing and the full Win81 version will still allow to "carry everything" (including desktop applications) from Win7 to Win81.
So, at least a builtin disk imaging tool still does exist in Win8.1.
But with Windows 7 Backup gone I still do not see a usable backup strategy for Win81 with builtin tools.
