Apple sell a lot of premium laptops, so they benefit from economies of scale. Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Sony, Samsung sell a lot of laptops, but a small amount of premium laptops.

Apple put Darwin (OS X Kernel) on the phone in 2007. Microsoft put NT (Windows Kernel) on the phone in 2012.
Outlook has always had its roots in the enterprise and been function first and form later… but that looks like it could do with a bit of polish still to me.
I suspect the only reason European buyers get a free cover is because… well… sadly there aren't many.
