not impressed in the least bit about this crap being on my machine in the first place and I am immediately uninstalling that KB....

I don't see why you are not impressed. Microsoft is enabling people to move to the upcoming operating system at no charge. They put a teeny tiny notice in one time. In twenty years they haven't ever done as much.

I'm impressed at the restraint and good taste Microsoft has shown over the years when it comes to this sort of thing.

Have to say im with stephen on that one, microsoft is being decent enough to offer you there brand new os free of charge and your whining about a little invitation pop-up. If you dont like it just disable the update.

I had to do a little work to get the icon to show up in Windows 7. I found some instructions here: techpp.com/2015/06/03/windows-10-update-icon-taskbar/

The only reason they are giving it away free is because it's garbage. Anytime Microsoft gives away something it's because it's garbage and that goes for OS's too.
