Bing Desktop Beta

Microsoft today released a beta version of a tool that looks to replace the Bing Bar for IE, sort of. Called Bing Desktop, this utility provides a Bing search box right on your desktop and automatically updates your desktop wallpaper to the current Bing Picture of the Day, each day.

The appeal of the Bing Picture of the Day is pretty obvious: Anyone who's visited Bing.com knows that the site features a terrific new photo every day.

But what about that desktop search tool?

I don't have a Windows 7 PC handy for testing at the moment, but it looks a lot like the PC and Mac desktop search tools that were popular a few years back, albeit that this one only works with web searches. Presumably, you'll end up in a browser eventually, so it's unclear what the point of this is.

But what the heck. It's probably worth it just for the Bing Picture of the Day.

Bing Desktop Beta comes saddled with all kinds of limitations, unfortunately. It runs only on Windows 7--and no, I couldn't get it to work in Windows 8--and is only available in the United States (for now on both, hopefully), according to Microsoft.

Still interested? You can download Bing Desktop from the Microsoft web site.

I have to blast computer hard drives all the time at work and the problem with Bing to me is that it just doesn't give me the results I am looking for. I'll try it from time to time out of laziness but I always end up back to having Google.com as my homepage. Even when I do a search on Microsoft tech info, Google provides me with the right information while Bing often doesn't even come close. Please improve your search engine Microsoft. I am tired of switching search engines each time I do a fresh install of Windows.

Thanks for the tip! It's not so much a search box on your desktop (like your screenshot portrays) as it is a floating toolbar that you can pop on top of any running applications by pressing WinKey+H. If Microsoft adds Bing Rewards to this, then it would save me some screen real estate in IE by getting rid of the Bing Bar. Paul, we need to get you some virtualization software so you can still use Windows 7!

It works fine in the UK too. Not really sure of the benefits either - the Bing desktop wallpaper you can get elsewhere, and other than that it just seems to be a shortcut for opening a browser and typing in your search. I guess it's more of a marketing thing than anything else.

I don't have any use for the search functionality, so grabbing the Bing Dynamic themepack from Microsoft at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/personalize/themes?... has worked great for me, to get the pictures as my desktop. They are stunning, as you know.
