Bluestacks Releases Surface Pro-Optimized Android Emulator

Suddenly, Windows 8 has over 750,000 new apps from which to choose

I’ve shied away from software emulation for a variety of reasons, but this week’s release of a Surface Pro-optimized version of the free Bluestacks emulator has me rethinking that stance. Plus, you can’t beat the 750,000 mobile apps that are available on Android, many of which may never be ported to Windows 8.

“The Surface Pro is an innovative device, but it has none of the top apps,” BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma told TechCrunch. “This fixes that and adds a lot of value for buyers.”

Bluestacks, if you’re not familiar, creates a popular Android emulation environment called App Player that’s available for modern Windows versions and the Mac. But this new release is optimized for Surface Pro. And that means a number of things: A true full-screen mode that works like Metro-style apps, a new Charms-like menu that appears using the same edge swipe, and full support for Surface Pro’s rotation and orientation capabilities.

I’ve only installed a few Android apps, but it appears to work as expected. For example, Temple Run 2 works in portrait mode, and all the onscreen swipes perform accurately, letting the game be played properly. And the Android version of Kindle supports that two column display I’ve been having trouble with in Windows 8. :)

If you’ve purchased a Surface Pro and are interested in running Android apps, be sure to check out Bluestacks App Player. I’ll be posting some comments about this in a future game-related article in the “Going Pro” series.

In the meantime, here's an introductory video:

I've never been on Android more than just a few days but this does look great and completely crushes the idea that Windows 8 lacks apps! Just for that it's (almost) priceless.

Will Bluestacks software run on a desktop/laptop running Win8 Pro?

Or for that matter on Win8 upgraded, clean install, computers for which Microsoft Store apps won't work for unknown reasons: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_insta...

So just gave it a spin and had a horrible experience. Buttons didn't react, and when they did, it was the wrong buttons.

Made sure to use the Pro optimized version.

Anyone else see this behavior?

I did as well.... I heard you might have to adjust the dpi settings back down to 100%, which is not something I'm willing to do.

Does this also work with Windows Phone 8? Or is there a comparable product for Windows Phone 8? That could really seal the deal on whether to get a new Windows Phone.

From what I've read, it doesn't work on an Atom tablet. I can only get a black screen on my Acer W510. If anyone knows of a workaround, please let me know. I would love to try out this product if I could actually get it to work.

Ugh. Anyone have any luck uninstalling this thing? I ran the uninstaller in Control Panel but it appears to have done almost nothing other than get rid of the shortcuts on the desktop.

The program decided to add an "Apps" library under my Libraries (which is why uninstalled, I hate programs that make changes like that witthout asking). I thought I had it removed but when I reboot it comes back.

Worse, Task Manager Startup shows 13 things running under BlueStacks Agent.

Also, appears none of the folders/files on C: drive were removed (Program Files (x86); Program Data).

Guess I'll nose around their support forums.

Update to previous post. There's something called "Fonelink Notification Center" that needs to be uninstalled also. Doing that and manually removing the "Apps" library seems to have worked.

Have you ever tried Splashtop for Windows 8? It is an iPad app that remotely connects your iPad to your Windows 8 PC, giving you an excellent emulation of a Surface tablet. It works best when run over your local WiFi. The app is called "Win8 Metro Testbed - Powered by Splashtop". It's not free, but it is an excellent way to experience the Windows 8 touch experience. Nearly a perfect emulation of a Surface tablet.

What I like about Bluestacks is that I can run Angry Birds without having to pay for it since its free on Android.

An emulator for Android? Wow! Someone seems to have been doing his homework and even more!

I for one hope this doesn't take off.

You can't beat native apps written to take full advantage of the OS. We don't need another reason for developers to not bother targeting Windows platforms: "You want app x? Download bluestacks!" ... what a horrible future :(

I think it's a worry if software is going to start targeting "Surface Pro" (or any other brand / sku for that matter) over Windows 8 in general.
The last thing W8 needs is to start becoming fragmented in that fashion.

I´m not convinced such targeting leads to fragmentation. In fact, targeting the Surface pro makes perfect sense as it is a device designed to be trendsetting & exemplifying of win8.
