Microsoft PLAY: Xbox Games on Windows 8

Popular Xbox LIVE Arcade games are being ported to Windows 8/RT all the time

Microsoft this week began talking up a new brand for its in-house Xbox LIVE games that have been ported to Windows 8/RT. Now dubbed PLAY, this is not really anything new, but rather a new push to entice people to adopt Windows 8/RT in order to play familiar Xbox LIVE games on a Windows device.

That said, I can understand why this is confusing to people.

Microsoft and its video game partners create games for various Microsoft platforms, including Windows desktop, Windows 8 (Metro mobile games, including Windows RT), Windows Phone, and of course the Xbox 360. On the Xbox 360, all games are Xbox LIVE enabled, meaning among other things that they supply achievements.

Microsoft ported Xbox LIVE games to Windows first with its Games for Windows LIVE initiative. These games in fact still exist, and while there aren’t a lot of them, compared to the wider selection of Windows desktop games, more do appear regularly.

Microsoft then ported Xbox LIVE to Windows Phone 7, giving game developers a choice: They could create regular games for the platform or, by following a strict set of rules, could alternatively create Xbox LIVE games for Windows Phone as well. This continues in Windows Phone 8.

With Windows 8/RT, Microsoft is again splitting things for game developers: Anyone can write and publish (Metro) games for Windows 8/RT, and publish them to the Windows Store. But by following a strict set of rules, developers can also create new Xbox LIVE games for Windows 8/RT.

So what’s Microsoft PLAY? It’s the new brand for Metro-style Xbox LIVE games—or, more strictly, Metro-style Xbox LIVE Arcade games—published by the in-house Microsoft Studios and ported from other Xbox LIVE platforms, usually the Xbox 360. Some of these games, like Hydro Thunder Hurricane, were available at launch, and more are being added all the time: The Gunstringer: Dead Man Running, Ilomilo Plus, and Toy Soldiers: Cold War Touch Edition were all added recently.

If you are using Windows 8 or RT, the fastest way to find these games (and other, non-Microsoft Xbox LIVE games for Windows 8/RT) is to launch the Xbox Games app, not Windows Store. Then, just navigate to the Windows Games Store. If you do want to buy or download a game, that will be handed off to Windows Store at the appropriate time.

I thought the games for Windows 8/RT would come much faster than they have. The selection isn't great right now and what's more concerning is the Xbox LIVE games situation on Windows Phone. The only new titles coming out are Nokia exclusives.

WPCentral.com had good article pointing out why. "Basically, the extent of Xbox-specific development is decided upon by Microsoft’s Business Development division. Unfortunately for gamers, that division is currently reevaluating its support of Xbox-branded games on Windows Phone. With their support in a limbo state, new Microsoft-published and/or funded games can’t be approved. The above refers specifically to games that would have Microsoft’s name attached to them."

Why must we pay for Xbox 360 Games, Windows 8 Xbox Games and Windows Phone Xbox Games? The titles we buy on one should give you the other versions... :/

I can see your frustration, but you also have to consider the time the developer is committing to write each game for each platform.

I'm disappointed by the fact that all of the new cool apps are so convoluted to find.

If it's difficult for me to find and purchase, it's going to be less likely I'll spend lots. If I'm not spending lots, developers won't develop lots. If developers won't develop lots, it'll kill the platform.

Please Microsoft - Make it easy for me to find and buy the cool things.

Going into games, scrolling to xbox games, (not realizing that 'xbox 360 games store' was a clickable link because it looks like other non-clickable text), and then searching for games, that can be purchased from the place I would have looked for them in the first place, is not a simple process.

I'm sure I know the answer to this, but the somewhat vague advertising at times makes it seem like this is a "buy once, play anywhere" service. I'm sure, however, you would need to buy the games on each platform. Correct?

Is there ever going to be a way to install & play games through the Games Tile that are more like traditional games? Full retail things, not just arcade games.

Seems they should just leave them as Xbox Live for Windows as they were initially branded, doesnt seem to be any difference with the additional Play branding.

Microsoft has always been horrible at branding. PLAY is just confusing, even to long time Xbox LIVE users. And I've been with Xbox LIVE on Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, and Windows Phone. Even the all caps "LIVE" branding is weird. They even tried using the LIVE branding with Windows Live. It's all these half-hearted attempts that are later abandoned that confuse users.

Make it simple. Just add "Xbox Live" to whatever platform the game that earned that status is on. "Windows 8 Xbox Live." "Windows Phone Xbox Live." Simple, easy to understand. It only gets to be a mouthful when you get to the consoles. "Xbox 360 Xbox Live" or "Xbox 720 Xbox Live" sounds kooky but it's accurate and users will just shorten it to the nickname "360 Xbox Live."

But most importantly, if games earn that "Xbox Live" status, it should be a mark of quality. Microsoft, especially Microsoft Studios, has dropped the ball on this in mobile.

One of the games I really like is Game Dev Tycoon. It's only available as a Lite version for Windows RT though.

There are some good games listed in the TegraZone app.

None of these Xbox LIVE games are new though.

I don't get why they'd call it PLAY when they've already got a well-known branding for Xbox Live arcade and games in general. PLAY just complicates it even more, and sounds too close the Google Play.

I agree, I am confused as to why they created the second name, but Microsoft may have picked PLAY because it sounds like Google Play. Google Play a popular and expanding service indeed.

Would love to see geoDefense Storm ported to Win8/RT Metro (already exists on iOS/Android/WP8)

Would REALLY love to see "Orbital" (my favorite iOS game) ported to WP8 and Win8/RT... dunno if that will ever happen.

REALLY want to see not just more XBox Arcade games on Win8, but more WP8 games on Win8 (and vice-versa).

I'm kind of disappointed that games like Cut The Rope and Angry Birds StarWars don't seem to "remember" progress across platforms. I thought that was the whole point of XBox Live integration... if I finish the first ten levels on my phone, and then switch to my SurfaceRT, I should be able to start on level eleven. Instead I find myself having to replay the game on all platforms.

That needs to be fixed.

Microsoft needs to simplify their whole eco-system. WP7.8, WP8, Win RT, Win 8 etc. etc. None of them compatible with each other, more than one 'store' it's plain ridiculous.

If you could purchase on one and play it on all with cloud based saved games, that would be a win in my book. I own ilomilo and fruit ninja on my xbox 360 and they expect me to pay all over again to play it on my pc! You gotta be kidding me!

In my opinion, with so many people switching over to tablets, macs and even linux (don't laugh, many new distros are really good like ubuntu and linux mint) you'd think Microsoft would jump and the chance to give people a reason to stay with windows.

The best reason I would stay with windows is if they let us buy the game on one device and play it on all devices. Kind of like how steam let's you purchase the game once but still play it on multiple PCs as long as you're logged in.

When I read the title, I thought "wow! That's great. Now I can play Halo 3." But then I thought "no, this is too good to be true! Life is not that merciful."

Microsoft should improve the Xbox experience on Windows 8 .. Every time I start a Xbox game , 10-15 secs are wasted because of signing in of Xbox id .
While the experience on Xbox 360 and Windows Phone is flawless

I definitely would still want to play windows games than playing Xbox games on my pc. Don't take this wrongly, because I personally love the idea of having an Xbox game on pc but the fact that windows game will still be better performing on pc than with an xbox game on pc, and besides pc gives more value for your money not to mention the quality of games you are getting graphically-wise. Take for example this Dead Space 3 game on pc. It looks better played on than on xbox.
