Surface Pro Availability, Round 2

Microsoft pumps more Surface Pros into the channel and opens up a reservation system

Another Saturday, another round of Surface with Windows 8 Pro sales. But this time, things are a little bit different. Yes, the 128 GB version is still scarce. But Microsoft’s online store is now taking waiting list orders, with shipment expected by March 1.

Hey, even Microsoft can learn.

According to the Surface team, US-based customers who wish to purchase a 128 GB Surface Pro should visit the Microsoft Store online and order it there. “[That order will] ship within 2-3 weeks, based on incoming inventory,” the team notes. “Once inventory is depleted, the system will show as ‘out of stock’ until new inventory is available to ship.”

A trusted source at Microsoft told me earlier in the week that the Surface Pro “inventory constraints” that marred the opening launch weekend were indeed quite real and weren’t invented by the firm to create the false impression of demand. But after the first wave of unit replenishment—Microsoft Store and Best Buy retail locations received new shipments of both Surface Pro models this week—there would be second round of shortages, especially of the 128 GB version. That explains the comments quoted above, as it turns out.

I was told, too, that reservations were up to the retailer. Microsoft didn’t institutionally instate reservations previously—meaning you couldn’t reserve a Surface Pro online or in many Microsoft Store retail locations and then receive it whenever it came in—but based on my email, some retail stores—Best Buy and Microsoft Store, from what I can tell—did offer this kind of reservation.

The ability to order a Surface Pro now and receive it by March 1 seems like a form of reservation. And the previously-quoted post from the Surface team explains how this will work:

Best Buy (U.S.). “Inventory levels are increasing and many Best Buy stores have Surface Pro units for sale in store,” the Surface team blog post reads. “If the store does not have stock, you can reserve a Surface Pro (64GB and 128GB). Please note that Best Buy is only taking reservations in their stores for Surface Pro based on new inventory they know is coming in next week, so it’s possible that reservations could become ‘sold out’.”

Staples (U.S.). “Many Staples stores have Surface Pro units for sale in stores,” the post notes. “If the store does not have stock, you can place a kiosk order in store to purchase Surface Pro 64GB for delivery.” Note that this specifies 64 GB: I’ve been told by a few retailer sources that Staples is only stocking 64 GB units, and it’s not clear if this is that company’s decision/fault or Microsoft’s.

Canada. “In Best Buy and Future Shop stores you can reserve the 64GB Surface Pro in stores at this time,” the post notes. “Staples has availability online while inventory lasts and more inventory has been ordered to ensure store availability in the near future. More details to come on the 128GB Surface Pro availability in Canada.”

While the 128 GB version of Surface Pro is clearly still the most in-demand version of Microsoft’s new tablet device, it’s perhaps notable that as I write this, at 7:30 pm ET, one can still “reserve” one from the online Microsoft Store. A week ago, this version of Surface Pro was sold out before I even woke up. One might (correctly) draw the conclusion that Microsoft has finally caught up with demand, but I do have one exclusive bit of information about this weekend’s resupply: Microsoft has shipped far more Surface Pro units for this weekend than it did for the opening launch weekend. So part of this is the firm adapting to demand too.

We’ll see what availability looks like in the next day or two. In the meantime, if you live in the US and wish to get a 128 GB Surface Pro, don’t wait. There’s no telling how long the next shortage will last.

Also, it’s worth noting that Microsoft has yet to publicly comment on international availability of Surface Pro beyond a vague promise that it will of course offer this product in many other markets in the future. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear differently.

London Drugs in Canada is advertising the Surface RT and Pro. The Pro in both 64 and 128 models. I haven't check in store but they did send out a tweet that they did indeed have them.

For the record, I went in this past Tuesday and they put my name on a list. They said they were receiving small amounts on a daily basis, and that I could expect to get mine by the weekend easily.

After not hearing anything, I went in today to see what's up, and they said that they had expected a delivery today but it didn't come in. They're expecting the next delivery on Tuesday. They're no longer taking reservations or pre-orders either... they're finishing out the list as it is, and directing anyone else to the website.

So still nothing in my hands.

Two days before launch, I reserved two Surface Pro devices at Best Buy. Received the first one on launch day and the second one today.

Best Buy does not make pre-orders easy. You have to check-in at Customer service then go back to the computer department to actually purchase the device. I had to do this twice and both times there was a bit of confusion about how it was to be done. The first time, they walked us back with the Surface in hand, the second, the had us walk back, speak to a sales person and then someone brought the Surface to him to complete the order.

My local Best Buy's store is still a mess in the PC/Tablet area. However I recently visited a Plano Best Buy that was MS Geek nirvana. The first thing you saw when walking in was a 27" Dell all in one properly showcased. More Windows devices down the main aisle. To your right in front of the computer department was the Surface tablets. To your left in front of the phone department were two Windows phones. It was almost like MS designed this store.

I'm happy that SP Pro demand is so great, but at the same time I'm face-palming myself into unconsciousness.

Why can't Microsoft get a major rollout like this right? True, PC sales is new to them, but with their resources, why couldn't they hire someone with experience? Or is it a confluence of circumstances beyond their control? I'm just baffled.

BTW, Paul, I can't login via desktop IE10. It does work in Metro IE10.

"I can't login via desktop IE10. It does work in Metro IE10".
I guess I don't understand the difference. I have a fresh 32-bit install of Windows 8 (to a blank hard drive) and there is an icon in the start screen to IE. If I go to the desktop instead and then click on IE, I get the same exact program. How can you tell "Metro IE10" from "desktop IE10"?

I reserved a 128 pro on 2/6 at best buy. While is was out to dinner tonight, I got an email from best buy saying my 128 pro was available for pickup. Just when I thought I might have to wait another week or two it arrived. Posting this comment on it .

On Monday, my son ordered a Surface Pro from the MS store in Cincinnati and we picked it up on Friday. What I don’t know is if that was a 4 day turn-around on his order, or the store just reserving a unit from their next shipment. Regardless, he was given until the end of the day to pick it up. During the hour and a half we were there, I observed what I believe were 4-5 Pros sold, or in process. This was mid-afternoon Friday, not what I'd consider primetime shopping hours.

A bit off topic: My son had Office 2013 installed at the store and is planning to install 2 copies of Office 2013 on his kid’s computers. Knowing how young children can be (irresponsible) with computers, if ever lost or stolen, can MS Office be disabled remotely?

Yes. Go into my office on the office site and you can deregister any copy from there.

I pre-ordered on 2/11 and was able to pick my 128gb Surface Pro up today at my local best buy. Interestingly, the outside packaging said 64gb so the Best Buy salesperson had to turn it on to verify it was 128gb (I have since noticed that it says 128gb under the kickstand). The barcode apparently came up correct as a 128gb device in Best Buy's computers as well. Weird!

So why is the 128 GB model so rare? Why is MS rolling the higher demand model so much more slowly?

Yeah, I'm so unhappy that Surface Pro demand is so great in the US, that it's even not available here. By design???, somewhere here in europe. WTFunk!

It would seem to me that if stores were to allow reservations, Microsoft would know how many units they needed to ship/make. That could be useful information.

I don't think there is any good excuse for Microsoft not to have enough inventory to meet demand. It's not like MS wasn't fully aware of the date they said they would be available. I have seen the Surface in person and honestly see no reason or need to purchase. In addition, the price is ridiculous. Any excitement I had went out the window when they said they weren't available. My IPad does all I need to do....on a tablet. My desktop does everything else I need to do. The shortage of inventory just gives me less faith in the company I have been relying on for many, many years.

Really, you can't imagine why it is hard to estimate the demand for a product, you yourself doesn't understand why people would want it? Given the lackluster demand for RT, dependingf on who you read of course, and the relatively dismal reviews by folks who have never even held one. Pre-orders might have helped, but that only unearths the blindly committed, not the let me touch one first crowd. I'm in the first group, BTW, and while the Surface, RT or Pro, may not be right for everyone, it serves a segment that nothing else does, very lightweight, real Windows. Even the RT, with it's four real Office products, supports a segment hitherto unfulfilled.

This one is going to end up in a Harvard MBA case study book. They announce the hardware four months before RT, which should have come second, is even available. They way over-estimate its demand. Delay another 100 days and then way underestimate demand for the Pro model, and produce more of the nearly worthless 64GB models than the 128GB model (which should have been the base model Pro). I'd bet the initial supply was at or near only 100,000, and now instead of having multitudes of Pros hitting the street and creating public buzz, they are still barely dripping through the pipeline. I wonder if this is what is really behind the Sinofsky departure?

In the UK in Jon Lewis Apple is front and centre with purpose built stand with apple logo 8ft up like a homing beacon. The stand is all uncluttered white and black, shiny, futuristic Appleness. The Galaxy note and tabs are over the back a bit next to the Nexus and a clue of Nooks. But the branding is all Samsung and the display small but signposted. The Surface only exists as RT and there is only one subsumed by a cornucopia of Win8 laptops (no touch). There are no marketing materials or signposting. It is just there if you happen to come across it. Suffice to say everyone was looking at the Apple stuff with a queue to fondle the ipad mini models. This is Redmond's issue. Everywhere all over the world. If MS want any sort of future and that future is mobile and tablet; they've got to out message and out market (and incent) Apple. The danger is that outside the enthusiast bubble has anyone heard of the Surface? Or RT? Or Win 8 touch? 18 months too late maybe. MS needs to innovate and update fast and often.

I'm very excited so far to read your review on Surface. I don't live in US, but I did put an order for it to be sent oversea.

Surface seems to be starting to climb on best selling tablet in BB. As of this writing, it is at no. 6 in tablet category, which is good considering it's just hit the store 9 days ago.. Though frankly it may not be a true measure of how many unit sold, but it's good to know it's making a good progress. Seems to be a good product based on many reviews.

Just wish I could get it at BB or Staples and have an easy time of getting the MS Complete extra warranty.

I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe here in Connecticut. My wife and I went to the MS store in Westfarms Mall just outside of Hartford on Thursday of the first week. They told us that not only had they just received new stock of the 128s that day, they never ran out of their initial stock. We left with 2, and after just about a week, we're both happy with them. Our iPads have already been wiped and are being handed down to relatives tomorrow.
