Surface Pro, Coming Soon to a Country Near You

Sales of both Surface RT and Surface Pro are expanding to more countries in the weeks and months ahead

Microsoft announced today that the Surface Pro and Surface RT tablets will be made available in more countries starting in late March. Surface Pro is currently particularly limited, with availability only in the US and Canada.

“The worldwide customer response to both Surface RT with Windows RT and Surface Pro with Windows 8 Pro has been exciting to see,” the Surface team noted in a post to the Surface Blog. “Today, we are pleased to announce that, beginning in late March, we will continue our phased approach to the expansion of the Surface family of PCs into new markets.”

Surface Pro enthusiasts will need to wait a bit longer than late March, however. At that time, Surface RT sales will be expanded to Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan. But Surface Pro will be offered in additional countries—Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Kingdom—“in the coming months.”

The press release describing this change is notable in that it finally describes these devices explicitly as Microsoft has defined them privately. “Surface RT is best described as a tablet with some laptop capabilities,” the release notes, while “Surface Pro is comparable to a full-blown Windows laptop that also boasts tablet capabilities.”

Meanwhile, both devices are considered “an extension of the Windows experience, letting customers work, play and connect with the people who matter to them. Surface lets customers transition between entertainment and creation.” Sounds like something I might have written. :)

From the UK perspective, Surface Pro will have missed the boat for many of us. PCs are an international business and we expect product available at time of launch, not several months later. There is no language issue to complicate matters for English speaking countries. Apple understand this, as do Samsung and the other major players. If Microsoft intend to make a business of the Surface line they will need to make sure Surface 2 gets an opportunity to sell.

If you wanted a Surface Pro, then it being released late for no good reason suddenly makes it less useful? I will be upset that I couldn't have it earlier but certainly will not cut my nose off to spite my face by then refusing to buy it. From Microsoft's perspective it has had a targetted hate campaign against Windows 8 and didn't want to push out millions of units to be left to rot in a warehouse. Sales of the RT have been tepid so it is understandable. Now they are assured of good uptake the guys over at Pegatron are probably working back-to-back triple shifts to push out as many units as possible. I can handle minor inconvenience to get a real machine and not an iToy

So, are they actually going to start offering these through distribution, or are they going to continue to screw over smaller resellers by locking them out of the market?

If they were really serious about entering this market, and by the comments about OEM's not delivering quality goods, they should've had these available in mass quantities from all resellers, especially partners that sell the entire Microsoft stack.

Microsoft Authorized Distributors don't carry these. I can literally go to Ingram Micro, North America's largest Microsoft Authorized Distributor, and Microsoft hasn't even told them what the SKU's will be and what the ETA is. This is the way Ingram Micro works though - the vendors approach THEM to sell, not the other way around. So for Microsoft not to tell them at least what the ordering SKU's and ETA's are, something really stinks about Microsoft's production run rate.

Interesting! Given my work profile, I find the Surface RT serves more as a nimble laptop and less as a tablet! Of course, I don't do any commercial work (normatively understood) on the machine.

Sadly, Mom wanted the touch tablet for Christmas; so ... there was an iPad under the tree, not a Surface.

If I bought one for myself, I'd get a Surface x86. but that's not available yet here, AFAICT. The RT looks nice, but the x86 version seems much more compelling because of its advanced x86 capabilities: it's not crippled and trapped in an Apple like walled prison, er, garden. But that's if I got one.

Maybe :o)

For those getting a touch tablet, yeah, if you can wait for the Surface x86, you will have a robust, advanced, and fully functioning - and high quality - touch tablet.

So Australia gets the Surface Pro "in the coming months". Nice to see that Microsoft really "cares" about Surface Pro, and international customers. It's been close to 6 months since the release of Surface RT, and now we have to wait another few months to get Surface Pro over here. I'm considering not getting one now.

Same here in the UK. I will wait for the NOKIA tablet or an alternative. Microsoft have missed the boat here, which is a shame as I was very keen to get a surface pro.

Have to admit, to a certain degree, I agree as well.

Nothing technology wise has excited me more in recent years than hearing I'll be able to get my hands on a Microsoft branded PC. However I feel pretty damn dissapointed that in the UK we're still waiting without a proper release date.

I feel almost like Microsoft don't deserve my money and perhaps I should look elsewhere... (who am I kidding though, I won't, I still want a Surface Pro so badly!)

All I can say is "At ***king Last" :)

Also they have not missed the boat just yet the only computers that can compete are : -

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook (Close to a Tablet)
Dell XPS 12 (Convertible)
Acer Aspire S7-391 (Not a Tablet)
HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 (Not a Tablet)
HP Spectre XT Ultrabook (Not a Tablet)
Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 (Not a Tablet)
Sony VAIO T Series 13 (Not a Tablet)

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix (Close To Surface Pro)

other use a Intel Atom or are Windows RT, both way way under powered...

I live in Japan and I have waited a long time for the Microsoft team here to get there butts in gear. No Windows Phone 8! No Office 365! Finally SurfaceRT! I was going to buy it for my wife. All she needs it for is office, internet, iTunes (a hack can make it work) and Live Writer. Sadly, there is no good blogging app for WindowsRT. When will they bring LIVE SERVICES to RT?

I was in a John Lewis store in the uk last weekend and the salesman was trying to explain the metro interface in Windows RT to customers. Most of them were asking questions like how they get iTunes on Windows rt.

LOL, different walled prison! They should be telling them to wait for the uncrippled version: Surface x86 with Windows 8.
