Windows 8 Tip: Get Media Center for Free

Media Center provides a nice interface for enjoying digital media content, and it adds DVD playback support too

When Microsoft announced that it was removing Windows Media Center from Windows 8 and making it available as a paid add-on, enthusiasts howled. But in a rare if temporary mea culpa, Microsoft is now making Media Center available for free to anyone with Windows 8 Pro. But you need to act fast: This special offer is available only for a limited time.

It’s also only available for free to Windows 8 Pro users. Those with the base version of Windows 8 will need to pay for something called the Windows 8 Pro Pack, as you’ll see.

For more information about the Media Center fiasco, as some think of it, refer to my post Windows 8, DVD Playback, Media Center, and You, from back in May. In it, I describe, Microsoft’s decision to remove Media Center from Windows 8 and the ramifications of this decision. And that is that it’s not just about Media Center: Microsoft also removed DVD playback functionality from Windows 8 as well.

Adding Media Center is one way to get this playback functionality back, though you will only be able to use Media Center (and not other applications) to play DVDs. Another is to purchase a third party DVD player application. Most new PCs will come with such an application.

In any event, it’s free. So even if you don’t think you’ll ever want or use Media Center, there’s no harm in grabbing the free product key now. You can always use it later.

Here’s how.

Normally, you would find and install such additional features, called Feature Packs, through the Add features to Windows 8 control panel. For example, Windows 8 Core users can use this interface to purchase the Windows 8 Pro Pack, a $69.99 offer which includes an in-place upgrade to Windows 8 Pro as well as Media Center.

If you access this interface from Windows 8 Pro, you will be offered the Windows 8 Media Center Pack, which costs $9.99.

Don’t do this. Instead, navigate to the Feature packs page on the Windows web site. Here, you’ll see the offer to get Media Center for free. (Again, you must have Windows 8 Pro to use this offer.) Just enter your email address and enter the captcha to trigger an email from Microsoft with the product key you’ll need.

Microsoft will send the product key via email within 72 hours. That email includes the 25-character product key you need to install Media Center.

Important: Before actually installing Media Center, be sure to save and close all open documents and close all running applications. This process requires a PC reboot and that reboot will happen without warning and without a chance to delay it.

Once you’re ready, run the Add features to Windows 8 control panel that was mentioned above. In the application window that appears, choose “I already have a product key”.

Then, type in (or better, yet copy and paste) the product key from the email. The wizard will check to see whether the key is valid and then note that you can continue.

Click Next to continue and install Windows Media Center after accepting the license terms. The install process should take about 5 minutes and will reboot the PC.

When the PC reboots and you return to the desktop, you’ll see that the wizard is complete.

Now you can run Windows Media Center, which works nearly identically to the way it did in Windows 7.

Just a minor addition add - if you are adding media center to multiple PCs you need to use different email addresses, else you get the same key each time.

Worth noting that Media Centre can't be added to volume licensed editions of Win8; http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itproinstall/thread/d...

FYI - There seems to be a real problem getting this to work if you're using a Technet ISO as a source (as many of us IT types probably will be), there's no option to add Windows 8 features. I haven't seen a fix yet.

This worked just fine with a TechNet iso.

I have MSDN access, so I'm not sure if you have the same resources from TechNet. You need to install a non-VL version. As far as MSDN, I had to download and install (re-install) Windows 8 (not Pro, as Pro is VL). Once with Windows 8, I used my Pro VL MAK to upgrade to Pro. I was then able to upgrade to Media Center.

The problem is not with the VL key, but with the VL ISO, All you have to do is install a retail ISO, and then upgrade to Pro with your key.

Pay attention to the fine print in the email you recieve. There is an installation expiration date! You can't save the key forever for installation later.

"your product key must be activated no later than February 1, 2013. Microsoft will only contact you at the email address you provide to send you your product key and to remind you when the activation period for your product key is ending."

This is a bummer for me because I like to sit out a new OS on my main computer for a while. I may setup a separate disk with Win8 and dual boot for a while.

So Paul is wrong when he says "...grabbing the free product key now. You can always use it later." So I guess you have to purchase again if you replace your hard disk. I hope, and wonder if, the paid-for key is good for future re-installs if Windows 8.

That was perhaps poorly worded. I didn't mean you could use the same product key repeatedly (though I've not tried that). I meant that you could get the product key now, not use it, and then apply it later.

@kwarner

Use system images?

You could make a system image with everything installed and activated.

You can then keep it indefinitely for when if ever you want to apply it to your computer.

In the mean time you can change your computer to any other configuration. If you want to go back, just apply the image. No massive reinstalling of applications etc. needed!

Have more than one system image of different setups if you want to .. and so on etc.

Yes, that is under consideration. I keep a bunch of old PATA disks around for just such occasions. 40GB of space is all you need.

I did this early last week and never received the email. I did get the message saying an email would be sent 72 hours later.

Paul can we get some sort of confirmation about the expiry date on the free Media Center addon?

I have installed it on both my Windows 8 Pro machines and I would like to know that if in the future I do a complete reinstall of Windows 8 and apply the Media Center key that it will work. Various people in blog posts are saying it won't past the expiry date which is silly.

I assume it will expiry only if not activated once before February 1, 2013. Plus is it tied to a particular Windows 8 product key?

"I assume it will expiry only if not activated once before February 1, 2013. Plus is it tied to a particular Windows 8 product key?" I don't understand the reasoning behind that assumption, other than wishful thinking. I'm not aware of a precedent, for example. It makes sense that it would be tied either to the Windows Key or to the hardware, otherwise one key would work for all and there would be no point in issuing individual keys.

I did this on 2 of my PCs. Unfortunately I used the same email for both and did not notice that the registration code was the same, now my second PC is claiming that my version of windows is not valid and needs a new key. I have applied for a new key using a different email, last time it took about two weeks for it to arrive. If this does not work I will try uninstalling WMC from my PC and hope it reverts to the windows pro activation key.

UPDATE 01-12-12
New key arrived, all working well. Too early for a Merry Christmas? Merry Christmas everyone. This site is fantastic.

We love to use the Media Center Extender on the Xbox to stream our music with picture slideshows. However, it is broken in Media Center for Windows 8. Music played without a slideshow works fine. With a slideshow, a song will may play every 5 minutes. I am wireless but this worked fairly well with Windows 7. Also, my ZunePass music used to play through the extender too and now longer does. Any suggestions?

I have a wired W7 & Xbox extender setup that I use continually for TV viewing and have had no problems. I'm considering upgrading to W8 Pro and getting WMC but after reading garak0410's post, I'm concerned I might encounter problems and I don't need anymore at the moment.

Has anyone here actually been using a W8 Pro/WMC Xbox extender setup successfully?

It is a pain to have to go through this again every time you upgrade your hard drive or buy a new PC, especially as it looks like you will have to pay for it after February 2013: I recommend you download VLC player for free, as it supports both DVD and Blu-ray players.

There's a remarkable level of angst here about something that will cost an Win 8 Pro user at most $10.00 if the key doesn't carry over to a new install, etc.

Skip 2 lattes the week you need to buy and you come out ahead and slightly healthier.

Is $39.99 the best price going for W8P upgrade and likely to stay at that?

Still no email from MS after 72 hours. I guess they received too many requests?!

kwarner
on Dec 7, 2012

There is an activation hack going around based on the WMC upgrade. MS may be delaying things as they try to find a way to block it.

kwarner
on Dec 12, 2012

According to the hacker websites, MS fixed the activation hack so WMC keys should be flowing again.

Really dissapponted here. I guess I won't be updating my media center to 8 (I prefer to use the latest versions of OS-s for security), as I am using technet for various installations to support my business. I've been trying for a week and I can't get anything other than "We couldn't process your order" on two systems, with 3 different browsers, and 5 different email addresses.

Frustrating....

There is a huge problem with this now. There are tons of support threads saying the same thing. All I get is the "We couldn't process your order" message now too. It doesn't matter what browser, operating system, or e-mail address I use.

Paul,

Are you hearing from people having problems with the xbox extender on Windows 8? I am. It works fine on the PC itself, but is slow and stuttery on the xbox itself. It worked fine on Windows 7. I feel as if MS is trying to put me off it and get a YouView system (a good alternative here in the UK).

Cheers,

- Rob
