It won't install on my 60GB SSD, so I'm using a spare HDD. Think it said can't use the SSD.
Still would like User Profiles on another drive, but it won't let me use Audit Mode and an XML file to install. Well, it may now that I have an ISO.
Every time I boot, it doesn't recognise the drive and insists I hit F1.
AHCI drivers are installed, but needs a Registry edit I suspect to get it to boot using AHCI setting.
Thank goodness this is a spare computer. Other than above, it installed okay.
Not sure I'm enamoured by it though :(
OK, finally got it to kick off. I went to the url ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade in Chrome and it started. In IE it didn't seem to do anything. Anyway, on the journey.
I have just upgraded to the latest 8.1 Pro from the preview version and now I cannot find any of my programs! I knew I would have to re install my apps but not my programs? Any ideas please?
I found out that it will not stop re-downloading the upgrade even if I do nothing to start it. It remembers that I have tried it without success and it keepsdoingit without me knowing, even when the computer is asleep. The result was that it downloaded almost 10GB yesterday. I have made sure that ALL updates were done previous to start the upgrade. It keeps failing at first reboot and brings me back to 8.0. I ended up having to shut down since it will download the whole pack non stop and I see no way of turning it off. It's all happening well behind so we have no control, probably where MS wants to go in the future of Windows. Just like Apple. By the way, it is installed on a dual boot machine with OSx (Hackintosh). Maybe that is why it does not work but I do not see how it could be a problem since when I boot in Windows 8.0 OSx does not exist. I see many are having the same result with the same error code which is 0x80073bc3-0x20009.
I just installed Win 8.1 Pro over the 8.1 Preview and I can't find any of my previously installed programs; Office 2010, SQL Svr Management Studio, Report Builder, Quicken, among just a few. Has anyone else seen this as well? thanks,
Ref Daveymo comment - This is the same thing that happened to me, yours is the only other comment I have seen about this issue. Anybody else seeing this and have any ideas. I found my old programs under the windows.old folder, but you can't run them from there.
hello guys, I've Windows 8 single language preinstalled on my Hp 4540s probook. Yesterday I updated my os to windows 8.1 through apps store. Updated got completed succefully but my windows not getting activated. It throws a error code Error code: 0xC004C008 . PLease help me..
Does the update make changes to the recovery partition ?
I have a Toshiba which , I'm sure like all modern laptops comes with the media on a separate and hidden partition, which the Toshiba installed software uses as a recovery source.
What about the saved Restore points, are these still valid ?
I have an HP and the recovery partition is still in tact. But now is seems I will have to re-install all my previous applications.
So why is it suddenly mandatory to use a Microsoft ID to install an upgrade? Does anyone else think that maybe Microsoft is Scroogling us?
Well I found the answer to using a Local Account here:
Specifically, in the well hidden section named "To keep using a local account" (which isn't so well hidden, but you do have to expand it.)
To keep using a local account
Windows 8.1 is designed to be used with a Microsoft account, so we recommend that you give it a try. Simply put, your Microsoft account is the glue that holds together so many useful features of the new Windows. Without one, you won't be able to, for example, automatically sync your settings and documents between PCs, back up your photos to the cloud so you can get to them from anywhere, or see all your contacts from multiple email and social networking accounts together in the People and Mail apps.
But if you're sure you want to use a local account instead, choose Create a new account, and then on the new account page, choose Continue using my existing account.
Let me start by saying i do like the windows 8.1 but this windows store is worst than Vista. For the past week it would not even connect. Then i guess i must have signed in somewhere and now i can connect. Would be nice to like i dont know maybe say something instead of a failure to connect message. I tried getting the upgrade but store app acts as if its never heard of 8.1. Go through the MS website and i get it but i dont know if its downloading or what its doing. It called a progress bar because its suppose to show you progress. At least show me that its started. Canceled and tried again. Had to scroll up to find the download. It used to be easier to get a service pack. The windows store is anything but easy. Its like going to best buy and they keep sending you to another department.
Again i do like windows 8.1 preview. But the windows store is a downright awful experience.
I started the download of 8.1 from the Windows store at 22:00 yesterday on bot my main PC (HP xw6400 dual quad Xeons, 8GB RAM) and my laptop (Sony Duo 13 core i7, 8GB RAM) on an ADSL connection with a download speed of generally around 11Mb/s. It wasn't until 12:00 today that the progress bar on the laptop showed any sign of life. After that it was all done within an hour. On my main machine by 13:00 the progress bar hadn't moved, so I cancelled and restarted and half an hour later the progress bar has started moving (very slowly). So to anyone seeing no progress: hang on in there; or maybe cancel and restart.
So, once you've successfully done the updgrade, is there any means to update the recovery image in the recovery partition to the Win 8.1 update? I know I can create the recovery on a USB key, but would like to know if I can update the recovery on the computer itself.
I just wanna know one thing,, is it possible to download the setup file of surface RT 8.1 from desktop computer and then installing it to Tablet, WIFI around here is so slow, it will take like 1 month to download 2.2 GB of that update,
Do I need to backup data before upgrade ?
I started to update Surface RT from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 yesterday afternoon. It took a lot of headache and until this morning to complete the task.
Refresh to 8 failed because some files were missing. But the restore via USB refresh published by Microsoft worked. Unfortunately, the restore version is ancient and approx. 80 updates had to be installed. The hickup was that Windows Update was "not able to search for updates". After an endless search through Blogs, I found the correct tip: date and time on the Surface were not correct! No mention of that - but the system did fix the update database and the service twice ;-(
Of course, the updates did not install without problems: many freezes which could only be solved by frequent reboots and restarting Windows Updates. Then finally 10 hours for the download of 8.1 RT (in Germany) and after another 1 hour everything was in place.
That is a dismal user experience - the only reason I am not absolutely furious is that I installed the preview at my own risk.
But still ...
I want to upgrade to 8.1 from 8. However, I also have a Nokia Lumia 800 running Windows Phone 7.8. I sync music, photos and videos between it and my PC using Zune (the only method as far as I am aware.)
Windows 8.1. Upgrade Assistant tells me that Zune is not compatible with WIndows 8.1, and there is no upgraded version currently available.
Does anyone know if this is correct, and, if so, is there a workaround or some other method of syncing a WP7.8 phone to a PC running Windows 8.1??
My Microsoft store isn't working. I updated to 8.1 then tried to open the store and it says the store no longer supports this version of windows. help?
You have taught how to upgrade from windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, I am a developer and now facing issues with it, i am unable to access emulator of wp8, Can you please tell us how to uninstall the 'Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center' ?
Please paul i am in big problem due it, i can't develop the applications which are in queue to develop.
I use an MSDN/TechNet ISO and have found that I can only open the DVD, navigate to the setup file and execute it. am concerned that I will completely replace my large number of apps? As this was typical of Win7, when one had to boot from the install disk? Is this right, open the DAV and execute the setup file?
I too have a new Dell XPS laptop with Win 8 on it. I downloaded 8.1 and started to "install" it. It took so long to download that I went to bed. It must have started the install by itself...
Now it is stuck rebooting into a black screen that all I can see is my mouse arrow roaming around.
This is a disaster, I have rebooted several times and it only boots up to a black screen. I guess I will have to find a way to reinstall Win 8, but I have no discs from Dell.
Microsoft SUCKS! I hated Windows 8 and now I hate 8.1 even more. I can't understand how this company survives! Do we have to wait for Windows 8.3 for them to get it right?!@?!!?
OK, read thru this and don't understand a LOT of it. I bought an ACER all-in-one with W8 installed. Upgraded to 8.1 by the store download. Worked fine.
Was smart enough to save all the DL'ed install files. Then the ACER had a problem and I swapped it out for another one as Best Buy.
Tried running the upgrade (from the saved 8.1 install files) on the new machine (setup.exe). It wants a code; I put in the one for both the original unit and then the replaced unit. Both are rejected.
Yeah uhm, I tried to update and it didn't work. And I lost everything. Pictures, Music, everything. Except my antivirus software and a few other things I downloaded. Help?
So after I tried to upgrade to Windows 8.1 it gave an error. And now I am stuck with temporary accounts. Help?
I'm having trouble with my internet explorer it says to upgrade it to a 32 or 64 bit and I clicked the one I had and it hasn't worked I restarted my tablet as well and nothing happened help please!
Recently I had failed three attempts to upgrade Windows 8.0 x64 to Windows 8.1 x64 through Windows Store. I have used Windows 8.0 x64 from the time it came out as promotion for new laptops purchase upgrade option. Since then there were updates autoinstalled and apps updates etc.
Today I reinstalled Windwos 8 x64 from the dvd media made from iso file which I downloaded after searching google and torrents :). Used Original key that came with Windows 8.0 purchase, it got windows activated automatically. Updated Windows 8.0 x64 from afresh. Did not installed new apps or change any settings. Once newly installed 8.0 was updated, I could see the option in Windows Store for Update to Windows 8.1. Things went fine after that and now I am running Windows 8.1 with ease. This site helped me to get a copy of ISO for Windows 8.1 which I will keep in case my updated Windows needs recovery or rinstallation (workability of which is still to be seen). But anyhow thanks for the Post.! Cheers!
Purchased a Samsung laptop with Windows 8.0 preinstalled and no media provided. I then upgraded to Windows 8.1 Preview after reading how this would bring me great joy. Now when i try to upgrade to windows 8.1 using the store I cannot get to the store. It either comes up with a white screen or the statement that I am not connected to the internet which is false. No product code and no way to get to apps..now what?
I have a client who failed to back up her photos on a new Acer laptop running Windows 8. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 the photos have disappeared. They are not to be found in the Photos tile or in the Pictures folder. I expected to find them in Windows.old/Users/Pictures folder but the folders were empty. Also her emails and contacts have disappeared from the Mail tile email client. Does anyone know if they are still to be found on the computer.
Purchased Samsung laptop with 8.0 installed. Upgraded online to Preview. Now trying to upgrade to 8.1 Found I could only get to the upgrade on store by using Internet Explorer. Chrome would not let me see it. Started download. after two hours got error message saying IE had stopped responding. this happened twice now.
I updated my Windows 8 to 8.1 but after updating, it said it is setting up. After that it is saying "Restoring your previous version of windows" from one week and I am not able to use my laptop. What should I do now? Really worried......please help.........
I try to upgrade to windows 8.1 from windows 8 directly from the app shop in windows 8 and never succes!
Do you have any idea how to do that? Thanx......my license key is original from windows
This may help out:
Just got a product key from ODosta Store at: products.odosta.com
Which worked perfectly So I'm so excited to share my experience here.their customer service is 1st class and I will definitely be recommending the site and I will be using the site again.
I "upgraded" early on form windows 8.1 to Win 10. However i encountered the black screen with cursor issue. I was not able to work around this problem - even spent most of a weekend on the phone with Microsoft support.
Eventually, I searched at Google, But did not find free working product keys so I've installed windows 10 pro on my laptop after getting a cheap product key.
