Follow up to my bricking story- Samsung has declared my year warranty void because I upgraded the hard drive to a Samsung SSD. Opening the panel to add ram or or upgrade the HD is ground for terminating the warranty coverage. The only way they will fix it is for $. No support, no help, and a dead laptop less than a year old. I'm seriously considering switching to a Macbook Pro. I cant believe how badly this has all gone.
If you have the libraries on any drive but c: win 8.1 will not load as per my system builder. I have a SSD for OS and programs and data on d: so no go.
Anyone have any thoughts on this one. After updateing the entire image on my Dell S2240T touch screen via HDMI is now one inch short of the endge on every side. How do you even get an HDMI display to be wrong. I had to calibrate the touch screen because IT still knows it is 21.5". I just lost 20% of my screen! Paul? Anyone?
So, has anyone been able to upgrade to 8.1 on a system that used a volume key? I stalled it on my work laptop using a MAK key as opposed to a KMS key, but no method I've tried this far as allowed me to download an ISO
I started by upgrading the laptop when I got to the Microsoft Account part. The option 'I do not have an account' was greyed out so forced to create an account. The account name indicated that I was being forced, the telephone number bogus along with my name etc and the password also indicated that I was being forced. The upgrade continued with no problem.
Turned the machine off and then tried to log in and the login has been changed from what I had it set to to the Microsoft account and it will not recognise the password.
Tried to contact someone at Microsoft but the only option was to complete the online form for a password change which was rejected as I had provided not enough info such as who I had sent emails to etc (how could I when the account had not been used).
Found an email address and emailed customer services outlining the problem. The reply, go to the website and use the online form!!!!!!
Complaint to their manager and asking for help - still waiting.
Upgraded the PC without it being connected to the Internet and no forcing to open a Microsoft account.
So trying to sort things out with the laptop created a recovery drive USB using the PC, removed the laptop HDD and copied off the files, used the recovery drive and tried to run the installation again without deleting files first and then intending to do a clean install if that did not work - but obviously it cannot use the files downloaded from MS for the upgrade and asks for a disc with the ISO file on it which you do not get.
Using the recovery drive went in to the system and found the existing installation in the E: drive. Went to users and it had created an additional user which assumed was the MS account one. Deleted the directory for the MS account and thought here we go - but no, still wants me to login to the MS account!
Perhaps a change to Ubuntu might mean less stress.
i have a problem my system Can’t start computer because of Status error 0Xc0000001 and i just call this number 1-855-332-3124 and my issue is fixed .
Seems the 'Windows 8.1 Tip: Download a Windows 8.1 ISO with a Windows 8 Product Key'. page got canned. I just get a blank page..
I have the surface pro (not 2) and did a full upgrade to 8.1 from 8.0 but after all the downloading and confirming it restarted and got stuck (stopped completely for over 8 hours) on the black surface screen with the spinning dots.
I didn't see that case covered anywhere so I tried tapping the power button to no effect and I was afraid of a forced power off (holding down the power button until it shuts off)
I had a moment of "aha" and thought to try removing the keyboard and instantly it started to show progress messages and now it looks like it is nearly done.
Hope this helps someone else.
i had issue that my login screen not appear after updating to 8.1 then i find a good real time solution at http://www.askbeen.com/26691/fix-windows-blank-screen-after-boot-on-upda...
I can't believe how horrible 8.1 is. I've got it installed on a desktop pc and after installing google chrome I find the browser is jammed in full screen mode with no way to alter it or exit it and there's a black box also jammed in the left hand side of the screen with a big orange arrow about 'swipe in from the edge'. Jesus christ on a bike how bad can this get?
Apparently the 8.1 upgrade went smooth for me on my Asus laptop. Only now I can't get the media straming to work? If I reactivate the media sharing, it kills my wifi connection!!! Wtf? Anyone facing the same issue?
Not sure if this was said in all the posts but I tried to do a REFRESH lol and it keep asking for my Windows 8.1 iso.. I didnt have one since I did the update. How do you get past this? Yeah I had to download a 8.1 ISO just to finish my REFRESH.
In addition to all the above woes, Microsoft Word, Google Chrome and other apps take many times longer to start on Windows 8.1 than on Windows 8.
Thanks for your posting on upgrade paths. I've decided to move from Win7 64 bit to Win8 to Win 8.1 I just wish I could!! First of all I have a family PC with multiple users, so I decided to play it safe and keep all apps, profiles, etc. Secondly, my machine is in need of a thorough cleaning regardless, with the occasional blue screen. I've managed twice to get Win8 install going only to get to a MAJOR BUG and surprisingly not uncommon. For whatever reason nearing the final rebooting stage, the menu comes up to boot to Win7, Win8, Win8 startup or another copy of Win7 it finds (not really, just some files copied to another drive for backup). The problem is at this selection menu - ALL/ANY keyboard and mouse go completely dead. It powers fine in BIOS and in booting, but come to this screen, dead. The selection menu times out and it defaults to the Win7 install. It's like it's looking ONLY for a touch selection. Of course because it doesn't get through the full install of Windows 8, my Win7 system is butchered. I'm in hour something something (no really double digits) of trying to recover from the Win System Image file. This bug needs to be killed with extreme prejudice.
I've had some strange problems with my 8.1 Pro upgrades. Now I have a new HP Laptop with 16GB of RAM and we're getting the "out of memory" error. I also experienced the "disappearing printers" with this same laptop after the upgrade. Any suggestions?
I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 from 8.0. Upgrade went smoothly but once I tested my programs found out that any program that connects to the internet is no longer able to do so. First was my Norton Internet Security that was reinstalled by a Norton tech who remotely logged in to my pc. Dropbox, GoToMeeting, GoToMyPC, Quicken, AIM, all give me a message that there is no internet connection but yet when I run the Network troubleshooter it does not find any problem. As a matter of fact I can visit any site with internet explorer except...are you ready...except any microsoft site, but yet my windows update works. It is not a virus as I run besides Norton other antivirus programs and could not find anything. Another issue is that my varius IE toolbars are there but when I click to show them they do not. They only show up when I try to go to Microsoft sites and I get the "This page cannot be displayed". As soon as I go to a different site they dissapear. Any idea, help, direction will be appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you Paul for your site. I've followed you for years. You may be the only person in the country that can straighten out this W8.1 MESS. I own 2 full copies of windows 8 pro with media player. So far the download from windows store crashed my desktop. I'm trying to get it up and going now.
I saw the offer to upgrade from win 8 to 8.1 and it went through the process painfully slowly, so slowly that after 3 hours I left it to it.
The only thing I was asked for was a hotmail account and password which I supplied. Everything worked, all accounts seemed fine until I came to uninstall a redundant graphics driver. I did not have any permissions on my loging account and had to use the Administrator account which required a password. I have never used the administrator account and have never knowingly had a password. I have tried every password I have ever used to no avail. I tried to change the password but can only do it with a password which I don't have.
I tried to go back to win 8 but it will not let me unless I have an
administrator password. It will not let me reformat without one.
Is there any way around this, I've tried Hotkey commands, lusr commands, even downloaded a password supply software and nothing has worked. Apart from that win 8.1 looks good, but how do I get administrator rights.
I upgraded to 8.1 from 8 and everything seemed OK until I tried to install or uninstall anything. The Administrator required a password. I have never had to use administrator on any of my previous windows from 3.1 on. At no time during the installation of 8.1 was I asked to provide a password but my own login does not appear to have the permissions. I have tried every password I can think of.
I have followed the advice from the microsoft site which all seemed to assume that I knew the password or that I had it on a USB. I have tried hotkeys and lusrmgr.msc commands which end up saying 'Access is denied'. I have tried to reformat but it says I have to put in password. I have tried to go back to an earlier setting but it still requires a password. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do next?
i love it
I have upgraded windows 8 to 8.1 on a dozen computers without significant issues. All of those computers were HP laptops or desktops. On their TouchSmart All-In-One, after the first reboot, a black screen appears and it goes no further. After shutdown and going through the restore process to windows 8, I get a message that it was unable to install Windows 8.1 with no error code. I can get no support from either Microsoft or HP with both parties blaming the other. I have checked the event logs without any indication of what is going on that I know how to decipher.
My client is upset and I am totally frustrated. Anyone have a protocol to help me get through this?
I have tried to apply the update to my home computer, it downloaded, started to apply the update and after about three hours decided it was unable to continue and restored my system back to Windows 8.... now what?
i am using windows 8 single language.i had downoaded 8.1 single language from windows store.after all the steps rebooting, sign in,code varification and sky drive next option….,my screen suddenly becomes black just after sky drive option ,with only cursor is visible for a log time..and when i refresh my system once again win. 8 appears..i hv repeated all these process 3 times, but all times same result=black screen.
what should i do???
plz give a proper solution.
My windows 8.1 upgraded just fine. my problem is windows 8.1 itself. After I upgraded, the majority of my apps were gone, I couldn't acess any of my files, and my wifi was on and connected to the modem, but none of my web browsers were working. None of my apps that I had left were connecting to the internet and so I couldn't use them at all. all in all, My computer is now worthless, windows 8.1 is crap, and I want windows 8 back.
I've just updated a nearly new VAIO to Windows 8.1. I noticed that Outlook (2013) search wasn't working and found that wsearch was not starting.
Contacted Microsoft. Had to pay £95 for the privilege of having a technician fiddle around with the machine remotely all day and still not get anywhere. I (and he) have tried everything, but it stubbornly refuses to work and - as usual (thanks Microsoft) - gives no real indication of why it's failing. The only solution they can propose is to reinstall 8.0 and then update to 8.1!
That, of course, means at least a day re-installing all my programs (this is a development laptop), including VS2012, SQL Server, MySQL etc. The first 2 of these alone will take a day (and probably fail more than once before finally deigning to work).
Grrrrrr. I wish I could stop using this rubbish, but I have to because the application is IIS based.
I've recently downloaded the Windows 8.1 upgrade to my Windows 8 Home Premium PC, At first this worked OK but now a Muted Speaker Icon has appeared and floats around my desktop. ( The sound system is not muted and works OK ) Any ideas on how this can be removed please.
Need some expert help here! Upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 with a free upgrade. Have a Lenovo laptop. Lost my connection to the printer which we figured out and just put back in the homegroup password to fix that. NOW I've figured out I can't attach pictures to my email or upload them to facebook. When I select "attachments" to add pictures to my email, I get pushed to a "skydrive" page where there are no pictures in the folder. So how do I get this feature back????
I updated from Win 8.0 to 8.1 a few days ago and have been in windows hell ever since. It is not possible to do a manual update at all. Endless loop of 8024402F to Update wizard and back to 8024402F error messages. To make matters worse it also does not seem to like Solid State Drives and freezes every few minutes. Was forced to buy 8.0 in the first place as not possible to buy a new laptop with the more stable 7.0 in NZ because MSFT ramming new OS down everyone's throat. Help desk unhelpful as usual and none of their proposed fixes have helped. Starting to remind me of XP SP1,2,3,4 compatibility issues.
