Windows 8/RT App Pick: SlapDash Podcasts

No podcast support in Windows 8? No problem!

Surprisingly, my sarcasm gets the better of me sometimes. After making a disparaging comment about the lack of quality Metro-style apps for Windows 8 and RT, I heard from a number of readers who had found some very useful and fun Metro apps. And one of the most often cited was SlapDash Podcasts, which fills a very real need in Windows 8/RT, the lack of integrated podcast support.

We may never see this podcast support appear directly from Microsoft via an Xbox-branded app, but given the high quality of SlapDash Podcasts, and it’s paid but inexpensive sibling, SlapDash Podcasts Pro—which costs just $1.99 and is advertising free—we may never need such an app.

SlapDash Podcasts is the mobile app frontend to the SlapDash Radio service. (There’s a Windows Phone version of this excellent app as well.) This service lets you subscribe to and manage podcasts in the cloud, rather than on a particular PC or device, which, if you’ve been paying attention, is exactly the right way to manage this kind of content.

To get started, you need to sign-in with a Facebook account, which might be a problem if you don’t have such a thing, in order to sync podcast subscriptions to the cloud. SlapDash is obviously useful without this feature on a single PC or device.

After that, it’s a simple matter of subscribing to podcasts, which you can find easily by searching the SlapDash catalog. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, you can also find particular podcasts via a URL. I had to add a couple of favorite podcasts—Travel with Rick Steves and NPR: On Point with Tom Ashbrook—this way.

The benefits of subscribing through a cloud service is that these podcasts will appear on any device you sign in with. So while I subscribed to certain podcasts from my main PC running Windows 8, these same podcasts appear when I use SlapDash on Surface with Windows RT and my Windows Phone 8-based HTC 8X.

What SlapDash appears to lack is a way to automatically download podcasts as they arrive, or using any kind of retention schedule (like “download the five most recent episodes” or whatever). That said, it offers a quick way to check for recent episodes and a nice Latest Episodes group in the main app view for finding new content quickly.

And you can simply stream podcasts to play them immediately: Downloading is only required for offline playback. (And furthest played location is synced between Windows 8/RT devices, though not to Windows Phone, at least not yet.)

SlapDash also provides background playback for both audio and video podcasts and a nice Snap view.

While episode download management is obviously a big need, SlapDash Podcasts provides an excellent platform for podcast lovers. Check out the free version to see if it meets your needs and, if so, be sure to pick up the Pro version for just $1.99. I have.

For me, I used my HD7 for listening to PodCasts all the time. Syncing with the Zune Software I could listen on the PC or Phone without any issues. I got the 8x and while I love the phone, I was disappointed in the lack of built in PodCast support.

I am using SlapDash to handle the podcasts, and it's doing a fair job. I still wish that MicroSoft had kept the PodCast support on the Desktop client. I do like that the Podcast list of SlapDash is synced between my two Win 8 machines and the phone.

Agree that it is a very nice app, the only problem being the FB tie in. Still haven't joined the Borg and don't intend to. Do they get paid by FB? I'd be willing to pay a little extra to avoid it..

I just converted to a Windows Phone and the state of podcasting apps on the platform is atrocious. None of them seem to support a queue of podcasts that need to be listened to. None of them support variable playback speeds. This seems to be just another entry that can barely call itself a podcast app. Why isn't there something better?

Podcasting is severely lacking, especially outside the US, but it is getting better. Try Podcatcher as a standalone app for Windows Phone and keep an eye out for the new cloud enabled and interface overhauled version of BringCast that will sync between Windows Phone and Windows 8/RT due for release shortly.

Stitcher group is working on a HTML 5 setup for their podcast management app.

Not available in European countries... Why, I say Why? Especially when Windows Phone version is on my Lumia. This doesn't make any logical sense.
Nevertheless, this app is grate and much more practical then troubling yourself with pc sync. Thanks, Paul for the tip! It revolutionized my podcast experience.

Irritatingly, same story for me. It's available on Windows Phone for me in South Africa, but not on the Windows Store for Windows 8/RT.

I've been using Xbox music pass which seems to work pretty good. What is that service missing for podcast features?

Also..what is the purpose of the Facebook account tie in? I am not interested in opening a Facebook account.

Everyone should have a fake Facebook account and a throw away email account for just such an occasion. The fake account is useful for taking advantage of Facebook-only offers if you don't want to have an actual Facebook presence, or to see how your real Facebook account looks to the outside world if you do have an real Facebook account.

I've been using SlapDash since the consumer preview. I also use it on my Lumia 900 instead of the native Podcast service since overnight updates take until 12 noon to show up in the marketplace. It's worth purchasing.

So what would my actual cost be to acquire this app for all of my Devices? Is the cost per device or is it for the cloud account, and all devices are included? I ask since I run maybe devices, including the suite of Win 7/8 Phone, RT, ENT as well as IOS units. Thanks

I tried punching in a couple podcast urls - useless. Doesn't pick them up at all.

I have tried SlapDash Podcasts Metro app three times since Windows 8 preview. Each time I come away disappointed and uninstall after less than a day. On iPhone I used iTunes' podcast management for years. In the past year I have grown to love Downcast of iOS. SlapDash Podcasts lacks infinitely variable playback speed control (such as VLC offers) and does not manage my preferred podcast play order. These are both features that I find invaluable.

So far I cannot find any Metro podcast solution for my Surface RT.

I can overlook a multitude of sins of omission on the windows 8 / windows phone 8 platform, but not having variable speed playback for audiobooks and podcasts is not one of them. The one thing I use constantly on my iPhone is podcast apps (I've paid for 3 different ones) and audiobooks. If Win8 can't match this capability then I'll have to stay where Ii am or go to Android (most likely).

Being a dev myself, but just starting in the .NET world, I've been researching and it seems that the support is lacking in the winRT media controls. The platform doesn't support variable speed, and so no apps can support it. It may be possible by using C++, but that puts it in the realm of a larger development time, and higher cost.

I'm not comfortable with giving my Facebook credentials to third-party applications. I've already had my Twitter account compromised after I used a third-party application. However, I would love to have a cloud-based podcasting application, and I might be willing to make an exception for SlapDash, but the problem is that SlapDash doesn't appear to make an app for Windows Phone. Instead, the WP app is made by another third-party, Frosty Nixon:

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/slapdash-podcasts/90e8b121-0...

So that means giving out your FB credentials to 2 different third-parties. What a shame. Maybe if SlapDash Radio came out with their own WP app, or provided another means of logging in, I'd consider it.
