Facebook 4 for Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 8 users get a huge upgrade this time

I noticed a wonderful little surprise last night: Microsoft has updated the Facebook app for Windows Phone to version 4.0. And while the new app works on all Windows Phone versions, Windows Phone 8 users are in for a special treat: This app suddenly runs quite quickly.

I’ve recommended the Facebook app since the first version because it improves on the built-in Facebook integration in important and useful ways. Facebook 2.3 added a beautiful panorama UI, an always-on and context sensitive app bar, and a few other changes. Facebook 2.5 was aimed at adding features that had recently (at the time) been added to the service such as threaded messaging, better tagging, more pervasive Like capabilities, and so on. But Facebook 4 is the big one, especially if you’ve moved to Windows Phone 8.

Update: It appears that Facebook 4 is only for Windows Phone 8 and that previous Windows Phone versions are still receiving an older version of the app.

Facebook 4 is very much geared for Windows Phone 8 and this release includes:

Improved performance. You’ll notice this immediately. As useful as the Facebook app is, it’s always been a dog, performance-wise. Now, the app runs like greased lightning. This is a huge, huge change.

Support for multiple resolutions. Facebook 4 supports all three Windows Phone 8 resolutions—1280 x 768, 1280 x 720, and 800 x 480—natively.

Support for all tile sizes. While the previous version of the app supported small and medium Start screen tiles, the new version supports all three, so a nice looking new large tile is now available too, and it rotates between your current cover image and a more static display.

You can get Facebook 4 for Windows Phone at the Windows Phone Store.

It still has one annoying feature/bug that really, really needs to get fixed: if you're looking at your feed, scrolling down, and see something interesting, and touch it to go into it (to add a comment, or to like, or to just read more), when you come back out, the app "refreshes" ... it looks for new things that might have been added. And if it finds any, IT JUMPS BACK TO THE TOP.

This is supremely annoying especially for an active feed, if you've scrolled way down. It's a pain to try and get back to where you were, so you can continue.

I can't believe this isn't the number one complaint about this app, and isn't at the top of the priority list for MS to fix. When I hit the back button to come back out, it should leave me where I am, so I can continue on without things jumping around on me and losing my place.

If you're like me and have very few friends, none of which post to my feed, this is not such a problem. I would be interested if anyone posted to it in the last few months, let alone few moments, to know something happened!

In all seriousness, I agree with you, though if it were in "settings", it might be too obscure to identify what it does, though I wish all programs or apps were ambitious enough to have lots of settings for their power users who use the program/app the most.

I totally agree with you on this. It bugs me, too. I also see other apps (news apps like FOX) do the same thing. After reading an article you have to wait..... for ...... the..... screen..... to...... update...... ARGH!!

It doesn't look like this is available for WP7.5, I only see version 2.7, not 4.0. I have a AT&T Samsung Focus (last update we get is 7.10.7720, so no Tango, just Mango).

Cannot download Facebook 4. The link above gets me to version 4.1 landing page, but the version downloaded to my WP 7.5 Samsung Focus after clicking install is 2.7. Go figure.

I'd love for Facebook to add full resolution picture uploads. This is a toggle option in iOS and something us WP8 users would appreciate with cameras being much better in the case of Nokia Lumia and 8x.

MS could jump ahead as a mobile business platform by adding the 'use as page' feature. Many of us want to talk to page fans and upload photos to pages as things happen. I think they would be the first to offer the feature if they did.

Why would one have to download a Facebook app if Facebook is part of the People Hub?

The People Hub doesn't allow you do to things like "like" individual comments, for example. It's good for casual use, getting a "lay of the land", seeing your notifications, or following one or a small number of people, but for any significant Facebook use, it's easier and more convenient to use an app. Not to diss the People Hub in any way, it's use is just a bit different.

Saw news about the update yesterday and checked manually but was not showing up for wp7.5. Today the marketplace showed update for 4 app, but still isn't there. :(

Version 4 is the first WP FB app I like. I still lean on the People Hub for quick access or status changes, but now I find myself using the FB App more often.
