Here Comes Windows Phone 7.8!

Microsoft has started rolling out Windows Phone 7.8 today, but it's not clear who is getting it yet

We've waited—and, let’s face it, whined—but now it’s here: Windows Phone 7.8, which provides the new Windows Phone 8 Start screen capabilities to your Windows Phone 7.5 handset, is being released today as previously rumored.

(I’d heard nothing about this release from my own sources.)

Microsoft is touting the release of Windows Phone 7.8 from the Windows Phone web site. According to the firm, this update adds the following new features to your Windows Phone 7.5-based handset:

Start screen. With Windows Phone 7.8, you gain the single best new Windows Phone 8 feature: The new Start screen with support for three tile sizes: Small, large, and wide.

More theme colors. As with Windows Phone 8, you also get 20 accent colors, up from the 10 provided in Windows Phone 7.x.

Lock screen. While Windows Phone 7.8 doesn’t pick up the highly configurable new Windows Phone 8 lock screen capabilities, it does get one new feature, your choice of a dynamic new lock screen image each day from Bing.

That’s not too shabby. But something tells me this will be the last semi-major update Windows Phone 7.x users see. I’m also curious about whether everyone is getting this update immediately. I don’t see it yet on my AT&T-based Nokia Lumia 900, for example. (You still need to use the Zune PC software to check for this and other updates.) No word yet from the Windows Phone team.

Update: Nokia has posted a Software Update for Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 7.8 page with some good info too.

I've been running Clean ROM from the XDA forums on my Focus, and it's been pretty solid. Unless there's something compelling in the official 7.8, I probably won't bother going with going back to a stock ROM.

No dice yet on my aging HTC Trophy from Verizon. But there's still a few hours left in the day :-)

Surprisingly, my LG E900 (Optimus 7) is getting the update too...

I think I'm the only Canadian who has a Windows Phone, but my LG Optimus on Telus hasn't updated yet.

Nope, I'm on Bell and my HD7 updated. I had to do the Zune cable trick though to force it.

Here in Belgium, HTC Trophy updating to 7.8... obviously with the "disconnect trick"

WPCentral has a good (and familiar) way to jump start the update.

I have no faith that Sprint will give their HTC Arrive customers this update. Their lack of support is why I won't be staying with Sprint even if they get Windows Phone 8 by the time my contract expires.

It worked on my lowly LG Quantum and looks great! I had to use the force method 3 times to get there, but it was no problem. Here's the link on forcing it: http://www.wpcentral.com/forcing-windows-phone-78-update-camera-button-n...

Can anyone tell me if WP 7.8 will finally get the ability to take screenshots? Anyone? Are we seriously still asking about this in 2013? :(

I'm still happy with my Lumia 900 until my upgrade in August, but the only feature I am looking forward to (I'm really happy as is) is the ability to take screenshots. I just wish I didn't have to wait months for that ability. Still happy with Windows Phone.

Here in Toronto, my wife got her update.. LG Quantum. Not me though. Same phone, same carrier (Bell)

I thought I would try the Ethernet disconnect trick, but timing was an issue for me. I unplugged Ethernet from the PC and but kept the phone Wi-Fi connected, then turned off Wi-Fi just after clicking update... Worked first try...

Really liking the new start screen. It is fantastic. It really enhances the phone.

It's a welcome update of course, although I'm not seeing it yet (I'm guessing it's going to be another case of waiting for carrier approval).

This basically does feel like a bone being thrown to us to placatae us - but it's small consolation. We may get 7.8, but what we'll never get is access to the slow but steady stream of new apps that are being released for WP8 only.

My handset -updated or not- is, in effect, running a dead OS, and that stings slightly when I'm still nowhere near the end of my contract - I'm still basically paying for this handset.

For my next handset a new WP handset will almost certainly be at the top of my list - but the twang of envy I feel at the number of /quality/ apps available for other devices certainly is pushing an Android handset in their as well. I expect the fact I prefer the Microsoft ecosystem (Outlook.com kicks Gmail square in the proverbials) will push me toward the WP device in the end - but still.

Nokia said earlier they will be providing some additional features with the update that are enabled by the firmware and are not part of the vanilla WP 7.8. Do you have any idea what these might be or whether they have been dropped?

@MarkH I don't think HTC is updating any WP7.5

" Karla Carrozzo (@tekgurl): @htc Are there plans to update any of your Windows Phone 7 devices to 7.8?

@tekgurl At this time, HTC does not have plans to deliver a Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade. If that should change, we'll let you know."

MarkH
on Jan 31, 2013

While this is certainly a common conversation that has occurred, I don't recall having every said that I don't think HTC is updating anything. What I said (or meant to say) was "mine hadn't yet." I believe that KristofVDB's comments are evidence that HTC's ARE being updated, and this is to say nothing of the numerous assertions that *all* WP7.5 devices will be updated.

Just in case my other comment that I just left is approved, I would like to apologize for my misunderstanding (the gratuitous use of @ threw me off and I misread it)...The response I would have given if I had read your comment correctly the first time would have been: There are already two other users on this page with Trophy's who have successfully updated, so clearly this is not the case.

As I understand it is up to the carrier, not the manufacturer. Is this correct?

Worked on my HTC Trophy (Vodafone Spain) using the cable trick. It needed 4 other updates before the final 7.8 build.

Reports from various venues note Titans, Trophys, Surrounds, Pro and Radars getting upgrades. Can't comment on locales/carriers, but that implies HTC is behind the upgrades

I'm excited for the 7.8 update for those who it applies to. I am ready for my Lumia 92x for Verizon... whenever it gets here. I am concerned about BB Z10. It looks... GREAT! MSFT needs to tighten down WP8 and stay on top of the promotions, advertisement and advancements or their #3 spot will be short lived.

Having fun with the new tile arrangement. Full screen as well. Updated it at midnight after I had a quick check here in the UK. I'm tickled pink, taupe and crimson. Delighted.

Did the disconnect method last night... Rogers Canada.

ALSO installed the new Nokia "7.8 Bluetooth Share" App.

Reports are that the disconnect method is working world wide.

I cannot understand why updating Windows Phone is such an ordeal. My Nokia 920 from the Build conference that is being used with ATT and for App development is still not updated and my Samsung Focus that has been relegated to App development testing has not being updated with 7.8. Microsoft can update millions of computers virtually instantly running their different OS's, but they can't seem to get updates to their phones. It does not make any difference to me if the carriers are blocking the updates or not. This process needs to be greatly improved and it does not help phone sales when articles are written about the extremely poor update process. IMHO carriers are just like stores selling computers, one does not expect stores to moderate updates. After all, smart phones are just computers in another form.

MarkH
on Jan 31, 2013

Reading through all of these comments I'm struck by a hilarious trend. Is there *anyone* in the world who is truly getting this update naturally, or is everyone just using the "disconnect trick?" :-)

*hint: it's a rhetorical question

I can confirm that the update is available for Nokia's Lumia line of Win 7.5 phones in Mexico by carrier Telcel.

Now...when are we going to receive the newer Lumias and the Surface RT tablet down here???

When I connected my HTC Trophy running WP 7.5 to my PC today, I immediately got a notice about an upgrade being available. Actually, there were three updates and they all were executed automatically and painlessly, ending up with the complete WP 7.8 running on my phone.

MarkH. I just plugged the phone into my PC and Zune. Checked for updates. It said there was one available. Clicked on okay and let it get on with it.

My LG E900 just updated to 7.8 after force checking for updates.
Strange thing is from what I've read this phone was not supposed to get the update...

rwburnham
on Feb 14, 2013

My unlocked Samsung Focus has not received the updated. I check via the Zune software every day. It's considered an AT&T "World Phone." Ever since I decided to wait on WP8 due to the media management mess, it has made the 7.8 update all the more important.
