Samsung ATIV Odyssey to Cost $49 via Verizon Starting Tomorrow

Verizon Wireless gets a third Windows Phone 8 handset

Verizon Wireless announced today that the Windows Phone 8-based Samsung ATIV Odyssey will be available for purchase starting tomorrow. The mid-level handset will cost just $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year contract.

The ATIV Odyssey is the third Windows Phone 8 handset to be sold by Verizon Wireless; the wireless carrier also offers the flagship HTC Windows Phone 8X and mid-market Nokia Lumia 820.

It’s a decidedly unexciting device, at least from a specs perspective: It features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display running at 800 x 480, a 5 megapixel camera (and front-facing 1.2 megapixel camera), just 8 GB of onboard storage, and microSD expansion. So there’s not much to say here.

It doesn't seem to have any advantages over the Nokia 822. Who would buy this?

The ecosystem can't grow with just one flagship and one mid-level phone offered on Verizon. I'm all for growing the Windows Phone displays at Verizon stores no matter how good or mediocre the additional phones are. Annnd people like nice price points, which I think this offers!

It does hold a memory card and have a bigger battery than the 822. But honestly Verizon needs to get their paws on the ATIV S and then they'll watch those sales tick right up.

It seems strikingly similar to the Samsung Focus WP7 I have sitting on my desk right now. If MS can work out the poor media management in WP8, I'd give this model serious consideration.
